VSB-TV

VSB-TV was a television station based in Hamilton, Bermuda, and a former affiliate of the American NBC network. It was established by the DeFontes Broadcasting Company, the Bermuda-based operator that had launched VSB Radio in 1983 and later expanded into television. The station began with test transmissions in 1990, initially using channel 13. A lightning strike disabled the transmitter before regular service could begin, prompting the company to build another transmitter and move the planned service to channel 11. Regular broadcasting started in the summer of 1991. The launch restored a measure of television competition to Bermuda. Earlier, in 1983, the owners of the island's principal radio and television operations had combined their assets, leaving a more concentrated television market. VSB-TV therefore entered as a third local television station. Within roughly six months of its launch, the station had introduced the VSB Evening News, a half-hour local bulletin. Its programming combined locally produced news, weather and sports with programming supplied through its NBC affiliation and other syndicated content. The schedule included NBC News, Today, Access Hollywood Live and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, among other programming. VSB-TV was associated with several technical and presentation innovations in Bermuda broadcasting. It was described as the first station on the island to use chroma key, virtual sets, regular sports segments and regular weather coverage supported by moving maps. Its scheduling also reflected Bermuda's Atlantic Time context: the station carried NBC programming live while presenting U.S. network content on a schedule that differed from the Eastern Time Zone's conventional local clock presentation. NBC Nightly News, for example, aired live in the evening schedule, while local and syndicated programming occupied other parts of the day. The station faced increasing financial pressure as advertising revenue declined. It did not make the transition to digital television using the ATSC format used in Bermuda. The cost of conversion, combined with continuing operating deficits and the changing media environment, made continued terrestrial broadcasting unsustainable. On August 29, 2014, DeFontes Group announced that VSB-TV's over-the-air service would be suspended indefinitely effective August 31. The announcement cited financial losses and declining advertising revenue, while leaving open the possibility of a future reorganization. After the transmitter service ended, the news operation continued online for approximately another year. VSB staff produced a daily, roughly 20-minute video bulletin under the VSB News Online name. On September 1, 2015, DeFontes Group announced that it would close its remaining operations and dismiss all 19 employees. The company's radio operations and online news stream ended when DeFontes Broadcasting ceased operations completely on September 30, 2015. VSB-TV consequently remains a defunct Bermuda television brand rather than an active broadcaster.

VSB-TV grew out of DeFontes Broadcasting Company's expansion from radio into television. DeFontes had begun operating VSB Radio in 1983 and decided several years later to establish a television service. Technical tests began in 1990 on channel 13, but a lightning strike damaged the transmitter before regular broadcasting could start. The company responded by constructing a replacement transmitter and using channel 11 instead. VSB-TV commenced regular service in the summer of 1991 from Hamilton, Bermuda. The station also established a programming identity based on a mixture of Bermuda-focused content and material supplied by NBC and syndication partners. Local output included news, sports and weather. VSB-TV was noted for adopting chroma-key presentation, virtual sets, regular sports coverage and weather segments using moving maps. Its NBC relationship gave viewers access to network programming such as Today and NBC Nightly News, while the broader schedule included entertainment and daytime programs such as Access Hollywood Live and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The station's scheduling operated in Bermuda's Atlantic Time context and carried selected NBC programming live rather than delaying it to match a conventional Eastern Time schedule. The business eventually came under sustained financial pressure. Advertising revenue declined, producing continuing deficits. At the same time, VSB-TV faced the expense of converting its terrestrial operation to digital broadcasting under Bermuda's ATSC standard. The station did not launch digital operations. DeFontes Group announced on August 29, 2014 that over-the-air broadcasting would be suspended indefinitely two days later, on August 31. The company expressed hope that the station might be reorganized and return, but the terrestrial service did not resume. DeFontes retained a reduced news presence after the transmitter shutdown. VSB staff produced a daily online video bulletin, generally about 20 minutes long, under the VSB News Online name. This digital continuation lasted for roughly another year, but it did not restore the former television operation. On September 1, 2015, DeFontes Group announced that it would cease its remaining activities and lay off all 19 employees. The company's radio operations and online news stream ended when DeFontes Broadcasting closed completely on September 30, 2015. VSB-TV is therefore a defunct Bermuda broadcaster whose history spans local television competition, early adoption of studio and weather presentation technologies, NBC affiliation and an unsuccessful transition from terrestrial television to a digital-first environment.
