Overview
VMware vSphere is VMware’s principal enterprise virtualization platform and a long-standing foundation for private-cloud and software-defined data-center environments. It combines the ESXi bare-metal hypervisor with centralized management and automation capabilities supplied through vCenter Server and related components. Rather than being a single application, vSphere is a product family used to abstract compute resources, create and operate virtual machines, pool physical servers into clusters, and apply policies for availability, resource allocation, security, and lifecycle management. The platform evolved from VMware’s earlier Virtual Infrastructure products and became known as vSphere with the release of vSphere 4 in 2009. Its development reflected the shift from server consolidation toward highly automated data-center operations. Organizations could place multiple virtual machines on fewer physical servers, move workloads between hosts, restart workloads after hardware failures, and adjust capacity without treating each server as an isolated system. History
VMware vSphere developed from VMware’s earlier server-virtualization and virtual-infrastructure products. VMware initially became known for placing a hypervisor directly on x86 server hardware and for enabling multiple virtual machines to share one physical host. As adoption expanded, customers needed more than a hypervisor: they required centralized administration, live workload mobility, automated resource balancing, high availability, and repeatable methods for provisioning and maintaining virtual machines. VMware assembled these functions into its Virtual Infrastructure product family. The vSphere name was introduced with VMware vSphere 4 in 2009. The release represented a broader platform rather than a simple hypervisor version, combining ESX or ESXi virtualization with vCenter Server and a set of data-center management features. VMware promoted vSphere as a foundation for internal cloud computing, emphasizing resource pooling, service-level policies, energy efficiency, and the ability to operate applications across clusters of standardized servers. VMware also expanded the surrounding portfolio with products for virtual storage, software-defined networking, operations management, disaster recovery, and hybrid-cloud use. vSphere installations commonly served as the compute layer beneath VMware-based data centers and hosted-cloud services. The platform later incorporated stronger connections to containers and Kubernetes. VMware introduced vSphere with Tanzu to allow supported Kubernetes workloads to run in vSphere environments, reflecting the growing overlap between traditional virtual machines and cloud-native application operations. VMware also developed integrations with vSAN, NSX, and its management products, although product names and packaging changed over time. Broadcom announced its agreement to acquire VMware in 2022 and completed the transaction on November 22, 2023. VMware became part of Broadcom’s infrastructure-software business, and the combined company reorganized the VMware portfolio around a smaller number of strategic products.
