Vietnam News Agency (VNA), officially known in Vietnamese as Thông tấn xã Việt Nam, is the state-run news agency of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. It supplies news, photographs, video, features and other information products for domestic institutions, media organizations and international audiences. VNA operates within Vietnam’s official public-information system alongside Vietnam Television and the Voice of Vietnam, and is described in reference material as the country’s only legal news agency. The agency was established shortly after the August Revolution in 1945. One of its earliest internationally significant assignments was the dissemination, on 15 September 1945, of President Ho Chi Minh’s Declaration of Independence and the list of members of the provisional government. Beyond its wire-service role, VNA has built a portfolio of newspapers, periodicals, websites, television and specialized media services. Its publishing history includes International Culture & Sports, Weekly News and other news editions. Viet Nam News, a national English-language daily, began publication in 1991. VNA also assumed operation of the French-language Le Courrier du Vietnam from 1994. In the digital era, it launched VietnamPlus in 2008, publishing in Vietnamese, English, French and Spanish.
