Russian gas crisis and German nationalisation
Uniper's dependence on Russian pipeline gas became a major public controversy after supply reductions forced the company to buy replacement gas at much higher prices. The resulting liquidity crisis required an unprecedented German rescue and eventual nationalisation. The episode also drew scrutiny because Uniper had financed Nord Stream 2 and, in April 2022, announced that it would pay for Russian gas under the ruble-conversion mechanism demanded by Moscow.
