Uber Arena

Uber Arena is a multipurpose indoor arena in Berlin's Friedrichshain district, near the Spree and the former East Side Gallery area. The venue opened in 2008 as O2 World Berlin and was developed as a major component of the Mediaspree urban redevelopment project. With a maximum configuration of approximately 17,000 spectators for selected concerts and combat-sports events, it is one of Germany's prominent indoor venues for touring entertainment, professional sport and large-scale public events. The arena's core business is venue operation rather than the manufacture or sale of consumer products. Its offerings include ticketed concerts, ice hockey and basketball games, international sporting competitions, esports tournaments, wrestling and combat-sports events, family shows, awards ceremonies and corporate or civic gatherings. The building is home to the Eisbären Berlin ice hockey club and Alba Berlin basketball team, giving it a regular local sports calendar alongside its international touring schedule. Its commercial identity has changed through successive naming-rights agreements. From its opening through 2015, the venue was branded O2 World Berlin under a sponsorship arrangement with Telefónica Germany. In 2015, Mercedes-Benz acquired naming rights for a twenty-year term, producing the Mercedes-Benz Arena Berlin identity. In March 2024, a new long-term agreement with venue operator AEG Europe brought the Uber Arena name into use. The adjacent Verti Music Hall was simultaneously renamed Uber Eats Music Hall, while the surrounding entertainment district formerly known as Mercedes Platz became Uber Platz. The arena has hosted a wide range of internationally recognized performers, including Metallica, Tina Turner, Britney Spears, Muse, Coldplay, Madonna, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Adele, U2, Depeche Mode, BTS, Dua Lipa, Harry Styles, Blackpink, Kendrick Lamar, Olivia Rodrigo and Justin Timberlake. Its sports and event history includes EuroLeague Final Fours in 2009, 2016 and 2024; group and final-stage basketball competition at EuroBasket tournaments; an NHL regular-season game in 2011; UFC events; Premier League Darts; the 2015 League of Legends World Championship final; the 2019 StarLadder Berlin Major; WWE events; the 2024 Laver Cup; and major motorsport-style family productions such as Monster Jam and Hot Wheels Monster Trucks Live. Beyond its programming, the venue has symbolic importance in Berlin's urban-development debate. Its construction and the wider Mediaspree project were associated with investment, redevelopment and increased international visibility for the district, but also with criticism concerning privatization, gentrification and the treatment of the city's riverfront. The arena remains an anchor of Berlin's event economy, serving local teams while attracting global tours and international competitions.

Uber Arena opened in Berlin in 2008 as O2 World Berlin. It was built in the Friedrichshain area as a major element of the Mediaspree redevelopment initiative, which sought to transform former industrial and infrastructure land along the Spree into a mixed commercial, residential and cultural district. The arena hosted the 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards, large touring productions by artists such as Tina Turner, Britney Spears, Muse, Madonna, Beyoncé and Coldplay, and the presentation of Germany's ECHO honorary award to the Scorpions in 2009. It also expanded beyond music through basketball, beach soccer, darts, ice hockey and other competitions. In 2015, Mercedes-Benz entered a naming-rights agreement that changed the venue's public identity to Mercedes-Benz Arena Berlin. During this period, its event mix broadened further. The building hosted the 2015 League of Legends World Championship final, the 2015 FIBA EuroBasket group stage, UFC events, concerts by Adele, U2, Celine Dion and many other international performers, and the 2019 StarLadder Berlin Major in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The arena continued to serve as a major stop for global tours after the pandemic-era interruption to live entertainment. In 2022 it hosted events including the final phase of FIBA EuroBasket, the Premier League Darts final and concerts by Dua Lipa, Harry Styles, Kendrick Lamar and Blackpink. In 2023 and 2024, its program included K-pop and international pop tours, WWE programming, Monster Jam, the Laver Cup and the 2024 EuroLeague Final Four. In March 2024, the venue was renamed Uber Arena under a long-term agreement involving Uber and operator AEG Europe. The change also affected the surrounding entertainment complex: Verti Music Hall became Uber Eats Music Hall and Mercedes Platz became Uber Platz. The current brand therefore represents both a physical arena and an anchor venue within a broader entertainment district. Its role remains dual: it is a home venue for Berlin sports teams and a platform for international touring entertainment, competition and corporate events.
