Overview
U&W is a British television channel operated by UKTV, the multichannel broadcaster whose portfolio includes several entertainment, factual and comedy services. The channel began broadcasting on 7 October 2008 under the name Watch, taking over satellite capacity previously used by UKTV Style +2. It initially operated as a pay-television service and was positioned as a broad general-entertainment outlet, drawing heavily on programmes from the BBC archive and other UKTV scheduling resources. Its early line-up included drama, factual entertainment, international adaptations of established formats and programmes displaced by changes elsewhere in the UKTV portfolio. The channel was part of the expansion of UKTV's entertainment offering during the late 2000s. Its programming included BBC-originated material such as Torchwood, international versions of popular formats including the American edition of Strictly Come Dancing, and factual or reality programming such as Traffic Cops. Following the launch of Alibi, some non-crime drama moved to Watch, helping distinguish the channel from UKTV's more specialised services. Paul Moreton was identified as the channel controller during its early period. Watch underwent several presentation and brand-identity changes during its first years. Its original visual system featured a large animated or live-action eyeball character, informally known as Blinky. A major identity update launched in September 2010 with the strapline "Watch... together" and a positioning built around shared television viewing. Further presentation changes followed in 2012. On 15 February 2016, Watch was renamed W. The relaunch was intended to give the channel a more contemporary identity and to broaden its emphasis on original drama, documentaries, lifestyle programming and personality-led factual entertainment. W subsequently developed a more clearly female-skewing proposition, with a stated focus on viewers aged approximately 25 to 44. Its schedule included programmes such as Inside the Ambulance, Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over, Nurses on the Ward, Emma Willis Delivering Babies, Emma Willis & AJ Odudu Get to Work and Women on the Force. A major distribution change occurred in March 2022. W became free-to-air on satellite on 21 March and relaunched across Freeview and Freesat on 28 March. The transition placed it alongside other UKTV free-to-air services such as Dave, Yesterday and Drama. The channel adopted the strapline "Life Unfiltered", a refreshed logo and presentation designed to support its female-skewing entertainment and factual positioning. The launch also required changes elsewhere in UKTV's Freeview line-up, including the relocation of Dave ja vu. In November 2023, UKTV announced a new U masterbrand for its television channels and streaming service. As part of that wider identity system, W was renamed U&W on 16 July 2024. The rebrand retained the channel's existing programming orientation and much of its recent presentation style while aligning its name and logo with UKTV's U family. U&W remains an active UK service, with a principal channel, a one-hour timeshift service and high-definition distribution subject to platform availability.
History
U&W originated as Watch, a UKTV channel launched on 7 October 2008. It replaced UKTV Style +2 on the relevant Sky capacity after that timeshift service closed in preparation for the new channel. Watch initially operated as a pay-television service and was designed as a broad entertainment outlet rather than a narrowly specialised channel. Its early schedule combined BBC archive programming, UKTV library content, drama, factual entertainment and international adaptations of successful television formats. The channel's programming role changed as UKTV developed its wider portfolio. Material from the BBC formed an important part of its schedule because the BBC, through its commercial arm, held a significant interest in UKTV during the channel's early history. Watch also carried programmes moved from other UKTV services. The launch of Alibi, for example, contributed to the transfer of non-crime drama to Watch, while programmes such as Traffic Cops appeared in the schedule in substantial quantities. The channel also broadcast international versions of British formats, including the United States version of Strictly Come Dancing and American editions of Wipeout presented under titles intended to avoid confusion with the British programme. Watch's early brand identity was deliberately distinctive. Its launch presentation used a large eyeball character, nicknamed Blinky, appearing in idents produced by Red Bee Media. Aardman Animations later modified some of those idents and additional computer-generated material was introduced. In 2010 UKTV reviewed the channel's identity and appointed Harriman Steel to create a revised logo, presentation package and tone of voice. The resulting identity launched on 23 September 2010 and used the strapline "Watch... together", presenting television as a shared social experience. Another design phase followed in 2012, involving DixonBaxi and revised promotional and on-screen elements. On 15 February 2016, Watch became W. The shorter name accompanied a repositioning toward original dramas, documentaries, lifestyle series and contemporary factual entertainment. Over time, W developed a clearer female-skewing profile, with UKTV identifying viewers aged 25 to 44 as a key audience. Its schedule included observational factual series, health and care programming, social documentaries, lifestyle shows and programmes led by presenters and public figures. The most consequential operational change in the channel's history took place in 2022. W had previously been a pay service, but UKTV announced that it would become free-to-air. The channel went free-to-air on satellite on 21 March 2022 and relaunched on Freeview and Freesat on 28 March. The move brought W into closer competitive proximity with UKTV's other free-to-air channels, including Dave, Yesterday and Drama. UKTV introduced a refreshed logo, new presentation and the "Life Unfiltered" strapline, while retaining a focus on relatable factual and lifestyle programming. The Freeview launch schedule included Inside the Ambulance, Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over, Nurses on the Ward, Emma Willis Delivering Babies, Emma Willis & AJ Odudu Get to Work and Women on the Force. The channel's distribution has also included timeshift and high-definition variants. Watch +1 launched alongside the original channel in 2008 and later became W +1 and then U&W +1. A high-definition simulcast launched as Watch HD on Sky and Virgin Media on 12 October 2011, with later availability on other television platforms. The HD service subsequently followed the main channel's naming changes; some platform-specific distribution has changed over time, including the closure of the Sky Q and Sky HD feed in April 2025 while availability continued on Sky Glass and Sky Stream. UKTV announced in November 2023 that its channels and streaming service would be brought under a new U masterbrand. W adopted the name U&W on 16 July 2024. This change aligned the service with the new corporate and channel architecture rather than representing a fundamental change in its role. U&W continues as an active British entertainment channel, combining factual, lifestyle, documentary and drama programming with UKTV's wider free-to-air distribution strategy.
