Overview

Twitter was an American social networking service centered on short, public messages that became known as tweets. The service emerged in 2006 from Odeo, a podcasting company founded by Evan Williams, after Jack Dorsey proposed a system for sending brief status updates by text message. Biz Stone and other Odeo personnel helped develop the idea, and the first version was used internally before being incorporated as a separate company. Its early growth was initially modest, but public exposure at the South by Southwest Interactive festival in 2007 helped establish Twitter as a distinctive communications product. The service combined a simple publishing format with social discovery. Users could follow accounts, reply to posts, repost them, send direct messages, and organize conversations through hashtags. Its short-message structure made it particularly effective for breaking news, live events, political discussion, entertainment, sports, customer service, and professional networking. Features that later became closely associated with the brand included the @username convention, hashtags, trending topics, embedded media, retweets, verification, lists, and chronological or algorithmically ranked timelines. Although the original service imposed a 140-character limit, the limit was expanded to 280 characters for most users in 2017. Twitter developed from a communication tool into a major advertising and information-distribution business. Its commercial products included promoted posts, promoted accounts, video advertising, app-install campaigns, audience-targeting tools, and data and API services for developers, researchers, publishers, and enterprises. The company also expanded through acquisitions and product development, including TweetDeck, Crashlytics, Gnip, TellApart, Periscope, Vine-related technology, and other advertising, analytics, mobile, and media assets. These transactions were intended to strengthen user engagement, developer infrastructure, real-time media, and monetization. Twitter became a public company through an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange in November 2013. During the public-company period, it faced persistent pressure to increase user growth, improve advertising performance, and clarify its role in online speech and news distribution. Leadership changed several times, including transitions from Jack Dorsey to Evan Williams, Dick Costolo, Dorsey again, and Parag Agrawal. The company also faced recurring criticism and regulatory scrutiny concerning harassment, abuse, misinformation, moderation, privacy, transparency, and the use of its platform during elections and civil unrest. In 2022, Elon Musk accumulated a substantial stake and agreed to acquire Twitter in an all-cash transaction. The transaction was contested in court after Musk attempted to withdraw, but the acquisition closed on October 27, 2022. Twitter became privately held, many senior executives and employees departed, and the company pursued a major restructuring. The corporate entity was merged into X Corp. in 2023, and the consumer service was rebranded as X during the same year. The Twitter name, bird imagery, and terminology were progressively replaced by X branding, although the former name continued to be used informally and historically. The Twitter brand is therefore best treated as a defunct or retired platform brand whose successor service operates as X.

History

Twitter began in 2006 as an internal project associated with Odeo, a San Francisco podcasting company led by Evan Williams. Jack Dorsey proposed a service based on short status messages distributed through mobile phones and the web. Biz Stone and other members of the Odeo team helped develop the product. The service was initially known as twttr, reflecting an early convention of omitting vowels from short technology brand names, before adopting the Twitter name. Early adoption was gradual, but attention increased after Twitter was demonstrated prominently at South by Southwest Interactive in 2007. The service's design encouraged public following rather than private, one-to-one communication. Users could post brief updates, follow accounts, reply publicly, and redistribute messages. Community practices such as hashtags and the @ symbol developed into core platform conventions. Twitter subsequently formalized and expanded these features, helping make the service useful for breaking news, live events, political communication, celebrity interaction, activism, and customer support. Leadership changed as the company grew. Dorsey initially served as chief executive, followed by Williams in 2008 and Dick Costolo in 2010. Twitter expanded its infrastructure, audience, mobile applications, advertising products, and developer ecosystem during this period. It also acquired or integrated companies and technologies in social-media management, mobile analytics, advertising, data, video, and live streaming. TweetDeck became a prominent tool for managing multiple feeds, while acquisitions such as Crashlytics, Gnip, and TellApart supported developer analytics, data services, and advertising capabilities. Twitter introduced commercial products including promoted tweets, promoted accounts, promoted trends, video advertising, audience targeting, and performance-oriented campaigns. Its business model depended substantially on advertising, although data licensing and developer services also contributed to its commercial scope. Twitter's real-time nature gave advertisers access to conversations organized around keywords, interests, events, and public figures. At the same time, the company had difficulty converting its cultural influence into consistently strong user growth and advertising results. The company filed for an initial public offering in 2013 and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange in November of that year under TWTR. As a public company, Twitter faced continuing investor demands for stronger monetization, clearer product strategy, and faster audience expansion. Costolo left the chief executive role in 2015, and Dorsey returned. Product changes during the public-company period included longer character limits, algorithmic timeline features, Moments, improved media tools, live video, verification systems, and expanded safety and abuse-prevention programs. Twitter also became central to debates about online speech and platform governance. It was criticized over harassment, abusive conduct, extremist content, misinformation, political manipulation, privacy, moderation consistency, and the handling of high-profile accounts. Governments and regulators in different markets increasingly treated the service as important communications infrastructure. These issues produced tension between free-expression principles, user safety, legal compliance, and commercial brand requirements. In 2020, Elliott Management's investment and campaign for governance changes added pressure on Dorsey and the board. Dorsey remained chief executive until late 2021, when Parag Agrawal succeeded him. In early 2022, Elon Musk began acquiring Twitter shares and disclosed a large stake. He later made an unsolicited offer to purchase the entire company. Twitter's board adopted defensive measures before accepting the offer. Musk subsequently attempted to terminate the agreement, leading Twitter to sue for enforcement. The dispute ended when the transaction closed on October 27, 2022. Following the acquisition, Twitter became privately held and underwent significant organizational and product changes. Musk became chief executive, senior leaders departed, staffing was reduced, and paid verification and other product policies were revised. The company pursued a vision of X as a broader or 'everything' application rather than solely a microblogging service. Twitter, Inc. was merged into X Corp. in 2023, and the consumer-facing service was renamed X. The Twitter name remains historically important and is still widely used when describing the platform's pre-2023 identity, but the original brand is no longer the active corporate or consumer name.
