Overview
TV2 is a Hungarian commercial television channel operating under the TV2 Group. It began broadcasting nationally on 4 October 1997, becoming Hungary’s first national commercial channel shortly before RTL’s Hungarian service launched. The channel was created in response to the tendering of two private terrestrial broadcasting licenses in a market that previously had very limited national television capacity. Its launch moved the Hungarian television system toward a competitive commercial model and displaced MTV2 from the relevant terrestrial distribution arrangement. The TV2 brand was associated with the channel’s corporate structure before the launch: the company was established in 1992, began using the TV2 name publicly in 1996, and had registered its logo by 1995. In its early years, the channel was controlled by SBS Broadcasting through MTM-SBS Televízió Zrt. Entertainment production was initially handled by MTM Kommunikáció Kft. and later by Interaktiv Kft. The Hungarian operation became part of ProSiebenSat.1 Media after that group acquired SBS in 2007. TV2 has built its schedule around a broad general-entertainment proposition. Its programming has included locally produced reality and talent formats, serial drama, news, factual programming, imported American series, films, lifestyle content and sports-related programming across the wider group. Among its most prominent original or locally adapted programs have been Megasztár, a Hungarian version of an international singing-competition format, and the long-running daily serial Jóban Rosszban. The channel has also carried internationally recognized series such as Desperate Housewives, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, Numbers, Heroes, Smallville, House M.D., Ghost Whisperer and Lipstick Jungle. TV2 was historically distributed through Hungary’s national analogue terrestrial network alongside M1, RTL Klub and local services. The analogue transmitters were shut down in two stages during 2013, after which the channel continued through digital terrestrial, cable, satellite and other distribution platforms. TV2 introduced selected high-definition programming in 2012, initially in connection with The Voice – Magyarország hangja, although the technical availability of HD on the MinDig TV terrestrial platform was limited until 2013. The channel’s ownership changed substantially after ProSiebenSat.1 sold its Hungarian and Romanian interests at the end of 2013. The Hungarian business was acquired by former TV2 executives Zsolt Simon and Yvonne Dederick, before the broader group was purchased by film producer Andy Vajna in 2015. Following Vajna’s death in January 2019, control moved through József Vida and an investment trust associated with him, with the group subsequently linked to businessman Lőrinc Mészáros. These changes placed TV2 at the center of continuing discussion about media ownership, political influence and the allocation of state advertising in Hungary. Since 2015, critics and opposition-oriented media organizations have characterized TV2’s news and political coverage as favorable to the Fidesz–KDNP governing coalition. The channel’s editorial direction and ownership have therefore been assessed not only as commercial broadcasting issues but also as part of the broader consolidation of Hungary’s media landscape. TV2 expanded its portfolio during the Vajna period from a small group of channels into a larger family of thematic services, including Super TV2, FEM3, Mozi+, Zenebutik, Izaura TV, Spíler 1 TV, Spíler 2 TV, PRIME, TV2 Séf, TV2 Kids, TV2 Comedy, Jocky TV and Moziverzum. The group has also pursued digital distribution. TV2 Play launched in February 2021 as a streaming and catch-up service offering earlier programs, series and other TV2 content. The service supports the group’s shift from a primarily linear television business toward a broader digital-first model. TV2 remains a nationwide Hungarian broadcaster and competes most directly with RTL for audience leaders…
History
TV2’s corporate origins date to 1992, when the company that would operate the channel was established. The TV2 name entered public use in 1996, and its logo had already been registered the previous year. The brand emerged from Hungary’s transition toward a competitive commercial television system. At the time, national analogue terrestrial capacity was limited, and the award of two private licenses created the conditions for new commercial broadcasters to challenge the public-service-dominated environment. TV2 began broadcasting on 4 October 1997, three days before RTL’s Hungarian service. It was therefore the first national commercial channel in Hungary. Its launch displaced MTV2 from the relevant terrestrial arrangement and gave viewers a general-entertainment alternative built around advertising-funded programming. The early schedule combined domestic entertainment production with acquired international series and other imported content. Between 1997 and 2002, MTM Kommunikáció Kft. handled much of the channel’s entertainment production. Interaktiv Kft. subsequently took over production responsibilities until 2013, after which IKO Műsorgyártó Kft. became a principal supplier. The channel was initially owned by SBS Broadcasting through MTM-SBS Televízió Zrt. In June 2007, ProSiebenSat.1 Media acquired SBS, bringing TV2 into one of Europe’s larger commercial broadcasting groups. ProSiebenSat.1 later sold its Hungarian and Romanian media interests at the end of 2013. The Hungarian business was acquired by former financial director Yvonne Dederick and then-chief executive Zsolt Simon. They reorganized the corporate structure through holding companies and a joint venture that evolved into TV2 Média Csoport Kft. in 2014. The 2013–2015 ownership period was marked by a public contest over control of the broadcaster. Károly Fonyó, a businessman associated with Lajos Simicska, was reported as a prospective buyer, while Andy Vajna also negotiated with the management. Vajna’s acquisition prevailed in October 2015. He quickly replaced the senior management, appointing Dirk Gerkens as chief executive. The Tények news operation also underwent a major editorial and personnel overhaul. The transaction became a significant event in Hungarian media politics because it connected a major national broadcaster with a producer close to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and with financing involving the state-owned Eximbank. Under Vajna, TV2 expanded rapidly. The group grew from four channels into a much larger portfolio of general-interest and thematic services, covering movies, music, food, lifestyle, sports, children’s programming and comedy. The expansion was presented as a strategy for reaching more narrowly defined audiences, but it also drew skepticism from media observers because of its speed and its potential effect on competition. Reports cited by the reference material stated that TV2 received a disproportionately large share of state advertising in 2015 compared with RTL Klub. Since 2015, critics have frequently described TV2’s political news coverage as supportive of the Fidesz–KDNP government, while supporters have treated its expansion as a successful commercial and programming strategy. TV2’s distribution also changed as Hungary moved from analogue to digital television. The channel had been carried on the national analogue terrestrial network, but analogue transmitters were switched off in two stages on 31 July and 31 October 2013. TV2 continued through digital terrestrial, cable, satellite and other platforms. In October 2012, it began broadcasting HD programming, initially linked to The Voice – Magyarország hangja; limitations in terrestrial network capacity meant that full availability on MinDig TV developed later. After Andy Vajna died on 20 January 2019, the group passed through a new ownership phase. József Vida, chairman of Takarékbank, took control through the Abraham Goldmann Investment Trust. Vida was described as having close ties to businessman Lőrinc Mészáros, who subsequently became associated with ownership of the group. Dirk Gerkens left the chief executive role, and Miklós Vaszily became CEO. Pavel Stanchev was also brought into the senior management structure. The group retained its political positioning while seeking to modernize its distribution model and strengthen its digital presence. In October 2020, TV2 Group expanded outside Hungary by acquiring the Slovenian commercial network Planet TV from Telekom Slovenije. The transaction generated concern about the growing influence of Hungarian, pro-government business networks in Slovenian media. In February 2021, TV2 launched TV2 Play, a streaming and catch-up service providing access to previous programs and series. The platform reflects TV2’s move beyond linear broadcasting and supports a digital-first approach across the group. TV2 remains a nationwide Hungarian commercial broadcaster and the main domestic rival to RTL in audience competition. Its business now combines the flagship channel, a family of thematic services, locally produced and acquired programming, news operations and digital video distribution.

Controversies

- 2015Controversial ownership transition and political alignmentControversy
The 2015 acquisition by Andy Vajna followed a contested bidding process involving Károly Fonyó and generated sustained scrutiny because of Vajna’s relationship with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, financing connected to the state-owned Eximbank, the replacement of TV2’s management and the subsequent editorial overhaul of Tények. Since the takeover, critics have repeatedly described TV2 as favorable to the Fidesz–KDNP governing coalition.
- 2015State advertising allocation criticismControversy
The channel’s rapid expansion and reported share of state advertising drew criticism from media-monitoring organizations and opposition commentators. The reference material reports that TV2 received nearly one-fifth of state advertising spending in 2015, several times the amount attributed to RTL Klub.
