TV Globo Pernambuco

TV Globo Pernambuco is a Brazilian television station based in Recife, the capital of Pernambuco. It operates on channel 13 and is owned and operated by Globo, the television business of Grupo Globo. The station is the principal local broadcaster of Globo network programming for much of Pernambuco, combining national entertainment, news, sports and drama with locally produced journalism, community programming, cultural specials and coverage of major regional events. The station began broadcasting on April 22, 1972, after Globo acquired the relevant operation from Organizações Victor Costa. Its channel license had originally been associated with Rádio Relógio, whose assets were sold to Organizações Victor Costa in 1962. Before Globo established its own Pernambucan station, TV Jornal do Commercio carried some Globo programs alongside content from other Brazilian networks and local productions. The launch therefore represented an important step in Globo's effort to build a more integrated presence across northeastern Brazil. The early operation was difficult. The station was brought to air under a tight regulatory timetable and initially used equipment transferred from other Globo operations, including a transmitter formerly used by TV Globo Brasília. Its signal was unreliable in parts of the region, while studios and administrative functions were split between facilities in Olinda and central Recife. Much of Globo's network schedule arrived on videotape by air, sometimes as much as two days after national transmission. Local journalism, however, was broadcast live, giving the station a distinctive role when entertainment programs were delayed. Temporary substitutions and repeated episodes were sometimes required when network tapes failed to arrive in time. During the 1970s and 1980s, the station also helped extend Globo's reach beyond Pernambuco. Relays carried its signal into areas including Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte and the interior of Pernambuco before those markets obtained their own Globo affiliates or dedicated regional stations. In 1977, relay operations in João Pessoa and Natal helped complete Globo's coverage of Brazil's state capitals. From 1978, the signal was distributed more extensively inside Pernambuco using relay infrastructure associated with the state telecommunications department. The station shared antenna infrastructure with TV Universitária under a scheduling arrangement that continued until 1983. The creation of TV Asa Branca and TV Grande Rio in 1991 narrowed TV Globo Pernambuco's principal coverage area to the eastern part of Pernambuco, while those stations served the state's countryside and hinterland. The station's regional role was subsequently reshaped by Globo's Nordeste Integrado project, launched in 2000. This initiative encouraged cooperation among northeastern stations and supported regionally produced programs and specials, including São João do Nordeste and other productions that occasionally reached the national network. TV Globo Pernambuco remains strongly associated with Pernambuco's public life and cultural calendar. Its local output includes the news programs Bom Dia Pernambuco, NE1 and NE2, sports coverage through Globo Esporte Pernambuco, and community or lifestyle programs such as Globo Comunidade and Radar NE. It has also produced coverage and special programming around Carnival, the Passion of Christ, São João and northeastern music. The station's signal footprint includes 54 municipalities and a relay in the Fernando de Noronha archipelago. A digital relay there was activated in October 2015, and the analog relay was switched off in October 2021.

TV Globo Pernambuco originated in the development of Globo's northeastern Brazilian network. The channel 13 license was initially granted to Rádio Relógio, and its assets were later acquired by Organizações Victor Costa. Globo founder Roberto Marinho had considered acquiring a stake in TV Jornal do Commercio, which already possessed a substantial technical operation, but that proposal was rejected. TV Jornal nevertheless carried selected Globo programs before Globo established its own station in Pernambuco. The station was inaugurated as TV Globo Recife on April 22, 1972, within the deadline established by Brazil's national telecommunications authority, DENTEL. A nationwide live special featuring Buzina do Chacrinha was broadcast the following day from Recife's Geraldo Magalhães Gymnasium. The launch was technically strained. The station used equipment obtained from other Globo branches, including a 5 kW transmitter previously used in Brasília, and initially operated from divided facilities: studios were located near Morro do Peludo in Olinda, while journalism and commercial departments were based in Recife. Operations were consolidated in Olinda in 1978, and the station later moved its headquarters to Santo Amaro in Recife in 2018. Because network programs were distributed on videotape and transported by air, much of Globo's schedule arrived late during the station's first years. Some tapes were reportedly delayed by up to two days, forcing the local operation to repeat episodes or improvise substitute programming. Live local news was less affected and became a central part of the station's identity. Despite its limitations, TV Globo Recife helped Globo connect its northeastern stations and extend network programming to areas without a full local affiliate. In the 1970s, the station's signal reached beyond Pernambuco, including viewers in parts of Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte. Relay transmitters installed in João Pessoa and Natal in 1977 contributed to Globo's national coverage of all Brazilian state capitals. From 1978, relays operated with infrastructure supplied by DETELPE expanded coverage into Pernambuco's interior, including Caruaru and Petrolina. Globo's signal also shared antenna facilities with TV Universitária, which broadcast during part of the day before Globo programming took over. That arrangement lasted until 1983, while DETELPE relay infrastructure remained important until Globo invested in its own relay network in the 1990s. The station's geographic role changed as dedicated affiliates were created. TV Cabo Branco and TV Cabugi replaced its signal in João Pessoa and Natal in the second half of the 1980s. In 1991, TV Asa Branca and TV Grande Rio began serving Pernambuco's interior and hinterland, leaving TV Globo Pernambuco primarily responsible for the eastern portion of the state. In 2000, Globo's Nordeste Integrado project gave the station a renewed regional coordination role. The initiative encouraged joint northeastern production and generated programs and specials such as São João do Nordeste, some of which were shown nationally. Today, TV Globo Pernambuco is both a local broadcaster and part of Globo's wider free-to-air network. It serves 54 municipalities and maintains a relay in Fernando de Noronha. Its local schedule includes Bom Dia Pernambuco, NE1, NE2, Globo Esporte Pernambuco, Globo Comunidade and Radar NE. The station also produces or has produced seasonal programs, documentaries, musical specials and coverage of Carnival, the Passion of Christ and São João. A digital Fernando de Noronha relay entered service in 2015, and the corresponding analog relay closed in 2021.
