A Chinese passenger-vehicle brand established by GAC Group and marketed internationally mainly as GAC Motor.

Overview
GAC Trumpchi is the domestic Chinese passenger-vehicle marque of GAC Group, one of China’s major automotive manufacturers. The brand was established in 2010 as GAC developed its own branded vehicle business alongside its long-standing joint-venture operations. Trumpchi initially focused on conventionally powered passenger cars and sport utility vehicles, then expanded into compact and full-size sedans, multi-purpose vehicles, hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and battery-electric products. The name Trumpchi is derived from the Chinese name 传祺, pronounced chuánqí. The term conveys the idea of spreading good fortune and is also associated phonetically with the Chinese word for “legendary.” Its similarity to the name of former United States president Donald Trump is coincidental. That similarity became a significant branding issue when GAC explored the United States market. Public reactions at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show and on social media reportedly led GAC to reconsider using Trumpchi in the United States. The company subsequently adopted GAC Motor as its international brand identity, rather than using Trumpchi outside mainland China. GAC’s first Trumpchi production vehicle was the GA5 sedan, which entered mass production in September 2010. The first 500 vehicles were supplied to the organizing committee of the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou. The sedan was then shown publicly at Auto Guangzhou in December 2010, with retail sales beginning that month. The GS5 sport utility vehicle followed in 2012, helping establish SUVs as a central part of the brand’s product strategy. During the following decade, Trumpchi added the GA3, GA4, GA6, and GA8 sedan lines, as well as the GS3, GS4, GS7, and GS8 SUV families. The brand’s portfolio later shifted toward larger family vehicles, premium-positioned SUVs, and electrified models. The M6 and M8 MPVs broadened its appeal among family and commercial users, while the E8 and E9 introduced hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains into the MPV range. The GS4, GS8, and their derivatives became important SUV nameplates, with the second-generation GS8 also serving as the basis for the plug-in hybrid ES9. More recent products include the Empow sedan, Emkoo SUV, and Xiangwang-branded vehicles sold within the broader Trumpchi product organization. In China, Trumpchi remains the domestic-facing identity, while vehicles exported to overseas markets are generally branded GAC Motor. The business therefore combines a Chinese-market brand architecture with an international corporate automotive identity. Its positioning has evolved from an affordable domestic alternative toward a mid-to-high-end Chinese vehicle brand emphasizing design, cabin space, connected features, SUVs, MPVs, and electrified powertrains. GAC’s proposed United States entry was ultimately abandoned amid trade tensions, tariffs, and the practical difficulties of launching a Chinese automotive brand in that market.
History
GAC Group began building facilities for its own branded vehicle operation in 2008. The resulting marque, launched in 2010, was named Trumpchi in China and used 传祺 as its Chinese identity. The name is based on chuánqí, a term associated with good fortune and the idea of being legendary. It was not chosen as a reference to Donald Trump, although the similarity later influenced the company’s international branding decisions. The first production model was the GA5 sedan, a four-door car derived from a platform associated with the Alfa Romeo 166. Mass production began in September 2010, and the first 500 vehicles were delivered to the organizing committee of the 2010 Asian Games. The model was formally presented at Auto Guangzhou in December 2010, when public sales also began. Early sales were limited to China, where the brand recorded approximately 17,000 vehicles in 2011 and about 32,000 in 2012 according to the cited reference material. GAC expanded the range with the GS5 SUV in 2012. The GA3 compact sedan appeared in production form at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show, followed by additional sedan, SUV, and MPV families. During the 2010s, the portfolio included the GA3 and GA3S, GA4, GA5, GA6, and GA8 sedans; the GS3, GS4, GS5, GS5S, GS7, and GS8 SUVs; and the M6 and M8 MPVs. Several models received electric or plug-in hybrid variants, reflecting GAC’s gradual transition from internal-combustion vehicles toward electrification. In 2012, GAC announced plans to export Trumpchi vehicles to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, South America, and Southeast Asia. For international markets, however, the company increasingly used GAC Motor rather than Trumpchi. The naming issue became especially visible after GAC explored a United States launch. The company had planned to introduce the brand there by the end of the 2010s, with the GS8 as a likely first model. Reactions to the name at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show and online reportedly caused GAC to reconsider its American branding. The proposed United States entry was later cancelled amid the United States–China trade conflict and related tariffs. The domestic Chinese operation continued to develop larger SUVs, premium-positioned MPVs, and electrified vehicles. The Empow sedan, Emkoo SUV, second-generation GS8, ES9 plug-in hybrid SUV, and E8 and E9 MPVs represent the brand’s more recent emphasis on technology and electrified powertrains. Trumpchi remains the principal Chinese-market marque, while GAC Motor is the main export-facing identity.
