Trimble is a technology company headquartered in Westminster, Colorado, whose products connect physical positioning and measurement technologies with cloud software and industry-specific workflows. Founded in 1978 as Trimble Navigation, the company initially built expertise in radio-navigation equipment and later became an important commercial developer of GPS and real-time kinematic positioning systems. Trimble combines GNSS and other sensors with desktop and cloud applications, digital models, mobile devices, automation, artificial intelligence, and collaboration tools. Its customers are typically professional and enterprise users rather than general consumers, including contractors, engineers, surveyors, architects, public agencies, fleet operators, farmers, manufacturers, and infrastructure owners. Trimble was established in November 1978 as Trimble Navigation by Charles Trimble and two engineers associated with Hewlett-Packard. Its first commercial opportunity came from acquiring rights to Loran-C navigation technology that Hewlett-Packard had discontinued. The company operated initially from Los Altos, California, and by 1982 was selling roughly one million dollars of Loran equipment annually. During the middle of the 1980s it shifted toward satellite positioning, introducing GPS technologies for offshore drilling surveys and aircraft navigation. Its headquarters moved to Sunnyvale in 1986. Trimble went public in 1990. That year it began supplying GPS-enabled personal position finders to the United States military. Demand increased after Iraq invaded Kuwait, contributing to a rapid rise in monthly sales. In the early 1990s the company concentrated on professional surveying and developed real-time kinematic positioning, a technique that enables highly precise measurements by correcting satellite-positioning signals. Its Site Surveyor System became commercially available in 1993, followed by a receiver with on-the-fly capabilities in 1994. The company also began adapting satellite positioning for heavy equipment. In 1995, Trimble worked with Caterpillar on GNSS receivers for construction machinery, initially producing a blade-mounted system for bulldozers. Charles Trimble departed the company in 1998, and Steve Berglund, formerly associated with Spectra Precision, became chief executive in 1999. Trimble announced the acquisition of Spectra Precision in 2000, adding complementary hardware, software expertise, and virtual reference station technology. In 2002, Trimble and Caterpillar created Caterpillar Trimble Control Technologies, a joint venture focused on machine-control systems. Trimble's growth during the 2000s increasingly combined positioning hardware with software and three-dimensional data. It introduced GPS and laser grade-control tools for earthmoving and land-leveling applications, and in 2004 acquired and integrated the people and technology of MENSI, a 3D laser-scanning company. Revenue grew substantially between 1999 and 2007, while the company expanded its workforce and international presence. During the 2010s, Trimble pursued a broad design-build-operate strategy. It acquired Tekla in 2011 to strengthen building information modeling and structural software, then acquired StruCad and StruEngineer from AceCad Software. In 2012 it purchased SketchUp from Google and acquired TMW Systems, broadening its design and transportation-software businesses. Sefaira, a building-design software company, joined Trimble in 2016. In 2018, Trimble agreed to purchase Viewpoint from Bain Capital in a transaction valued at $1.2 billion, adding construction-management software and services. Robert G. Painter was selected to become president and chief executive in 2020, succeeding Berglund. Trimble continued emphasizing connected workflows, robotics, cloud software, and asset information. In 2020 it announced an integration with Boston Dynamics to connect construction data collection with the Spot robotic platform. AgileAssets was acquired in 2021, extending the portfolio into infrastructure asset management. B2W Software joined Trimble in 2022, adding heavy-civil construction software, while the company also acquired Transporeon to reinforce transportation management. That year Trimble relocated its headquarters from Sunnyvale to Westminster, Colorado. In agriculture, AGCO announced in 2023 that it would acquire an 85 percent interest in Trimble's agriculture business, creating the PTx Trimble joint venture. In 2024 Trimble joined the Alliance for OpenUSD and announced a partnership with Nvidia involving model data for Omniverse RTX viewers. It also acquired Flashtract, whose payment, compliance, and documentation tools were subsequently branded Trimble Pay. Later in 2024, Trimble announced the planned sale of its transportation telematics business to Platform Science in exchange for a 32.5 percent stake in that company. These transactions illustrate Trimble's continuing effort to focus on connected software, digital models, positioning, and industry platforms while using partnerships and portfolio reshaping to reach specialized markets.
