Overview
Trans7 is an Indonesian private free-to-air television network operated by PT Duta Visual Nusantara Tivi Tujuh and owned by Trans Media, the media arm of Trans Corp within CT Corp. The channel began broadcasting under the name TV7 in November 2001 after a television permit originally associated with Duta Visual Nusantara was acquired by Kompas Gramedia. Its initial operation was modest: the service launched in Greater Jakarta on UHF channel 49 with a limited evening schedule. Coverage and transmission hours expanded during its early years, eventually reaching additional cities including Surakarta and Surabaya and moving toward a near-full-day schedule. The original TV7 project represented Kompas Gramedia’s entry into television broadcasting. Its early programming emphasized entertainment, local material and exploratory documentary formats. One of the best-known examples was Jejak Petualang, an adventure and nature-oriented program that became a durable part of the channel’s identity. TV7 also experimented with international news presentation. During the first quarter of 2003 it carried daily Al Jazeera relays concerning the United States-led invasion of Iraq through a program titled Invasi ke Irak. The move was notable in Indonesia’s competitive television market, where rival ANTV responded with coverage from Al Arabiya. TV7 faced commercial and audience challenges in its early period. Contemporary reporting discussed the possibility of a sale to Surya Citra Media, the parent company of SCTV, because of financial difficulties, but that transaction did not take place. A change in ownership later came through CT Corp. In August 2006, Trans Corp agreed to acquire a 55 percent stake in PT Duta Visual Nusantara Tivi Tujuh. The ownership transition culminated on 15 December 2006, when TV7 was relaunched as Trans7 in conjunction with Trans TV’s fifth anniversary. Following the relaunch, the channel moved its office to the Trans TV building and became the second television network associated with CT Corp. Under the Trans7 identity, the network developed a broad general-entertainment schedule spanning factual and adventure programming, news-related content, sports, variety shows and other locally produced formats. Sports rights became especially important to its profile. Trans7 has carried major football competitions at different times, including the Premier League, the AFF Championship, Serie A, La Liga, the International Champions Cup and the 2018 FIFA World Cup. It has also been a long-running Indonesian broadcaster of MotoGP, later adding World Superbike coverage, and has shown domestic badminton events such as the Indonesia Open and selected Thomas and Uber Cup tournaments. The network’s distribution model changed during Indonesia’s analogue switch-off. Trans7 ceased analogue transmission from Jakarta and surrounding areas on 2 November 2022 and subsequently ended analogue transmission in other areas as the national transition to digital broadcasting proceeded from late 2022 into 2023. The channel remains an operating Indonesian broadcaster within the Trans Media portfolio. Its present positioning combines mass-market entertainment with locally produced factual programming and high-interest sports rights, while its brand retains a connection to the TV7 service that preceded the 2006 relaunch.
History
Trans7 originated as TV7, a television project established through the Indonesian company PT Duta Visual Nusantara Tivi Tujuh. The underlying permit history dates to the late 1990s, when permission was issued under Indonesian broadcasting regulations to Duta Visual Nusantara. The project was initially associated with H. Sukoyo and business partners before the establishment permission was sold to Kompas Gramedia. The transaction enabled Kompas Gramedia to pursue a television business alongside its established newspaper and publishing operations. TV7 was formally launched on 25 November 2001. Its first service was concentrated in Greater Jakarta, using UHF channel 49 and broadcasting for approximately five hours each evening. The network later expanded its transmission footprint to cities including Surakarta and Surabaya. On 7 April 2002 it entered a more developed on-air phase, and by 2003 its schedule had expanded to roughly 22 hours per day. The early channel employed about 300 people and concentrated on entertainment, local programming and exploratory formats. The original logo referenced Jakob Oetama, a co-founder of Kompas Gramedia, and also bore a visual relationship to the Circle 7 motif used by some ABC-affiliated stations. The channel’s early years included both local experimentation and international news coverage. Its factual and adventure programming helped distinguish it from purely entertainment-oriented competitors; Jejak Petualang was among the formats that continued beyond the TV7 period. In 2003, TV7 also carried Al Jazeera relays covering the Iraq invasion in a daily program called Invasi ke Irak. The decision placed the network within a wider competitive response among Indonesian broadcasters, as ANTV carried corresponding material from Al Arabiya. TV7’s market performance was uneven. Reports in 2003 indicated that Surya Citra Media had been offered the network because of financial problems, but no sale to that company was completed. A more consequential ownership change occurred in 2006, when CT Corp’s media business, then operating through the Para Group and Trans Corp, authorized the purchase of a 55 percent interest in PT Duta Visual Nusantara Tivi Tujuh. On 15 December 2006, the network was relaunched as Trans7 during programming associated with Trans TV’s fifth anniversary. The rebrand made Trans7 the second television network in CT Corp’s portfolio and led to the relocation of its office to the Trans TV building. After the rebrand, Trans7 developed a generalist schedule supported by locally produced entertainment, factual programming and sports. Sports rights became a recurring strategic asset. The network has carried football properties including the Premier League, the AFF Championship, Serie A, La Liga, the International Champions Cup and, jointly with Trans TV and other partners, the 2018 FIFA World Cup. It has also been the Indonesian broadcaster of MotoGP for more than two decades, with coverage later extended to the World Superbike Championship following the opening of the Mandalika circuit. Badminton has been another important area, including Indonesia Open coverage from 2008 to 2019 and selected Thomas and Uber Cup events. Trans7 subsequently adapted its distribution to Indonesia’s digital television policy. Analogue transmission ended in Jakarta and nearby areas on 2 November 2022, followed by the termination of analogue operations in other areas during the national analogue switch-off process, which continued into 2023. The network remains active as an Indonesian free-to-air broadcaster under Trans Media and CT Corp, combining mass-market programming with sports rights and Indonesian factual content.
