Overview
Trans TV is an Indonesian free-to-air television network operated by PT Televisi Transformasi Indonesia. The channel is based in South Jakarta and forms part of the Trans Media broadcasting portfolio associated with businessperson Chairul Tanjung and CT Corp. Its schedule combines locally produced entertainment with news, drama, religious programming, films, imported series, children's content, quiz and variety formats, and selected sports rights. The company was incorporated in 1998 while it pursued authorization to operate a national television service. Its early activities were centered on the Trans TV Television Centre in Mampang Prapatan, South Jakarta. Technical test broadcasts began in July 2001 in the Jakarta metropolitan area, initially using limited daily transmission hours. During the following months the service expanded its testing footprint to Bandung and then to other Indonesian cities. Trial programming included music videos, interactive entertainment, news, and imported American films and television series. Trans TV formally began nationwide broadcasting on December 15, 2001. The initial terrestrial rollout covered Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Solo, Surabaya, and Medan, with further expansion and relay arrangements following. The network’s early identity emphasized a general-interest, locally oriented service capable of combining Indonesian entertainment formats with acquired international programming. Its principal slogan, “Milik Kita Bersama,” has been associated with the channel since launch. Over time, Trans TV became known for programs such as Extravaganza, The Dorce Show, Reportase Investigasi, and Indonesian adaptations of international entertainment formats including Thank God You're Here and The Gong Show. It has also carried soap operas, gossip and lifestyle programs, cartoons, religious shows, news bulletins, and feature films. Sports has been another component of its offering, including badminton events, football competitions, and selected national-team or international tournament coverage. A major visibility point came in 2018, when Trans Media participated in a consortium that acquired Indonesian broadcasting rights for the FIFA World Cup in partnership with Telkom Indonesia, Kompas Gramedia, and MNC Media. Trans TV served as a principal broadcaster of the tournament, carrying most group-stage matches and all final-stage matches according to the cited reference. The coverage was associated with a rise to the top of Indonesian television ratings in June 2018. The network has periodically refreshed its visual identity. In December 2013, Trans TV replaced its earlier diamond-based emblem with a wordmark centered on the stylized “A” in “TRANS TV.” The redesign aligned the channel visually with Trans7 and the wider Trans Media identity. Trans TV remains an active Indonesian broadcaster with a programming model built around mass-market entertainment, news, locally produced factual content, acquired films and series, and event-based sports coverage.
History
PT Televisi Transformasi Indonesia was established in 1998 under a South Jakarta incorporation and broadcasting-authorization process. The company’s shares were primarily associated with Para Inti Investindo, a subsidiary of Para Group, before the network became part of the broader Trans Media and CT Corp ecosystem. Its early headquarters and technical operations were located at the Trans TV Television Centre on Jalan Kapten Pierre Tendean in Mampang Prapatan, South Jakarta. Technical transmissions began on July 1, 2001, in the Jakarta metropolitan area. The initial tests used restricted hours and were intended to validate the station’s technical infrastructure and terrestrial coverage. In October, the network extended testing to Bandung. The channel also developed preliminary entertainment and news output, including interactive presenters, music-video segments, and the news program Berita Hari Ini. A further trial began on October 25, 2001, in both Jakarta and Bandung, making the two-city test an important step in the network’s expansion. During November and December 2001, Trans TV broadened its trial presence to seven cities: Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Solo, Surabaya, and Medan. Trial schedules included the Transvaganza programming block, American films, and acquired television series. The service formally opened on December 15, 2001, at 18:30 local time. Its terrestrial launch used different UHF frequencies in each initial market and was supplemented by carriage on satellite and pay-television platforms. The network developed a general-interest schedule designed for a national Indonesian audience. News, current affairs, drama, films, cartoons, religious programs, gossip and lifestyle shows, quiz formats, and variety entertainment all became part of its output. Programs such as Extravaganza and The Dorce Show helped establish a recognizable entertainment profile, while Reportase Investigasi represented its factual and investigative programming. Trans TV also localized international formats, including Thank God You're Here under the Indonesian title Akhirnya Datang Juga and The Gong Show. Sports rights supported the network’s event programming. Trans TV broadcast badminton competitions including the Thomas and Uber Cup in multiple years, and it carried football properties such as the Tiger Cup, La Liga, and Copa del Rey. Later sports programming included the FA Community Shield, selected La Liga and Copa del Rey matches, England national-team fixtures, and the British FA Cup. In 2017, Trans Media joined a multi-company consortium that secured Indonesian rights to the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Trans TV subsequently became one of the principal Indonesian outlets for the tournament, broadcasting most group-stage matches and all final-stage matches. The coverage was followed by a reported ratings lead in June 2018. Trans TV’s visual identity evolved alongside the network. Its original emblem used a rhombus or diamond motif containing the TRANS lettering and geometric T and V elements. The station was also notable for displaying a grey version of its logo during commercial breaks, a practice later adopted more broadly by Indonesian television channels. On the network’s 12th anniversary in December 2013, the symbol was removed and replaced by a wordmark using a stylized A in TRANS TV. The redesign brought the channel into closer visual alignment with Trans7 and Trans Media. Trans TV continues to operate as an Indonesian free-to-air broadcaster. Its current identity is based on a combination of mass-market entertainment, Indonesian-produced factual and news content, acquired films and series, children's and religious programming, and occasional high-profile sports events. Its long-running slogan “Milik Kita Bersama” expresses the network’s intended position as a broadly accessible national channel.
