Topologika Software Ltd was an independent British publisher of educational software. Established in Stilton, Cambridgeshire, in 1983, it operated during the formative period of the British home-computing and educational-software market, when schools and households were adopting systems such as Acorn's BBC Micro and other personal computers. The company became particularly associated with software that combined learning objectives with narrative, exploration, puzzles, and game-like interaction. Topologika's early catalogue was strongly influenced by the British interactive-fiction tradition. Several of its first releases were adventure titles originally associated with Acornsoft. After Acornsoft was sold to Superior Software, the latter concentrated primarily on continuing Acornsoft's arcade-oriented releases, leaving an opportunity for other publishers to develop and distribute the text-adventure side of the catalogue. Topologika took on a number of these works and issued substantially improved versions of titles including Countdown to Doom and Philosopher's Quest. The company spent most of its operating life in Penryn, Cornwall, before later moving to Brighton in Sussex. Although its origins were in computer adventures, Topologika increasingly focused on educational software rather than publishing interactive fiction as a standalone entertainment category. Interactive storytelling remained part of its educational approach: Sellardore Tales and Stig of the Dump were adapted for CD and virtual learning environments, while Peter Killworth's mathematics adventure GiantKiller used exploration and problem solving to support mathematical learning. Topologika was dissolved at the end of June 2013. The dissolution ended the company's operation as a publisher, but did not immediately eliminate its catalogue. Educational software continued to be sold by distributors including REM via, and the products continued to receive support from founder Brian Kerslake.
