Titagarh Rail Systems Limited is an Indian rolling-stock and transportation-equipment manufacturer headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal. Formerly known as Titagarh Wagons, the company is built around two principal activities: Freight Rail Systems and Passenger Rail Systems. Its product range includes freight wagons, railway castings and components, passenger coaches, metro trains, trainsets, traction motors, propulsion equipment, train-control systems and other railway systems. Through a wholly owned subsidiary, Titagarh Naval Systems Limited, it also operates in shipbuilding and maritime engineering. The business traces its industrial origins to Jagadish Prasad Chowdhary's acquisition of the foundry division of Britannia Engineering at Titagarh in West Bengal during the early 1980s. That operation initially supplied railway castings such as bogies and couplers. Titagarh Rail Systems itself was incorporated on 3 July 1997 and first concentrated on freight wagons. The company subsequently expanded into passenger rolling stock, metro vehicles, propulsion and electrical systems, bridges, defence-related engineering and shipbuilding. The company has been involved in metro programmes in Pune, Ahmedabad, Surat, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Patna, as well as the Vande Bharat trainset programme through a consortium with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited. Titagarh developed international capabilities through acquisitions. It bought French wagon maker Arbel Fauvet Rail in 2010, although that operation was later liquidated and Titagarh exited it in 2019. In 2015, it acquired Italian passenger-rail manufacturer Firema Trasporti, creating Titagarh Firema SpA. Firema contributed passenger-rolling-stock design and manufacturing capabilities used in the development of Titagarh's Indian passenger business. The Italian operating business was transferred to Fabbrica Italiana Treni in March 2026, marking Titagarh's exit from the investment. The company's broader transportation portfolio includes forged railway wheels through a joint venture with Ramkrishna Forgings, as well as collaboration with ABB on traction and train-control localisation. Its maritime operations include naval support craft, tugs, research vessels and inland vessels, with a developing shipyard at Falta in West Bengal. In 2026, Titagarh also announced a collaboration with TuTr Hyperloop, an IIT Madras-incubated company, to examine freight-transport applications combining rolling-stock engineering with hyperloop propulsion and control technologies. Titagarh Rail Systems developed from a West Bengal railway foundry business associated with Jagadish Prasad Chowdhary. In the early 1980s, Chowdhary acquired the foundry division of Britannia Engineering at Titagarh. The operation initially supplied cast railway components, including bogies and couplers, giving the business a base in railway manufacturing before it moved into complete vehicles. Titagarh Rail Systems Limited was incorporated on 3 July 1997. Its initial focus was freight wagons, a segment supported by India's large railway network and the requirements of both Indian Railways and private freight users. Over time, the company expanded its manufacturing and engineering scope to include passenger rolling stock, metro vehicles, propulsion systems, railway electrical equipment, bridges, specialised vehicles and defence-related engineering. The company pursued international expansion through acquisitions. In 2010, it acquired French wagon manufacturer Arbel Fauvet Rail. The French business was subsequently liquidated in 2019, and Titagarh exited that operation. The company has expanded beyond conventional wagon sales by obtaining a wagon-leasing licence from Indian Railways. It has also won specialised defence and railway-maintenance contracts, including orders for defence wagons and Rail Borne Maintenance Vehicles. Titagarh broadened its industrial portfolio into maritime engineering through the acquisition of a shipyard business in 2012. Its maritime activities have included naval support vessels, tugs, research vessels and inland craft. On 1 January 2026, the shipbuilding and maritime-systems business was transferred into the wholly owned subsidiary Titagarh Naval Systems Limited. A new shipbuilding facility at Falta, south of Kolkata, is intended to support larger commercial and naval vessels. Railway systems and component localisation have become increasingly important. Titagarh manufactures traction motors, converters and train-control equipment, and has collaborated with ABB on localisation of traction and train-control technologies. It also formed Ramkrishna Titagarh Rail Wheels Limited with Ramkrishna Forgings to manufacture forged railway wheels in India. In 2026, the company announced a strategic collaboration with TuTr Hyperloop to investigate freight systems using hyperloop propulsion and control technologies. Titagarh is listed on India's Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange. Its contemporary strategy combines high-volume freight manufacturing with higher-value passenger vehicles, metro systems, rail electronics, maintenance services, wheels, defence engineering and maritime products. The company remains active, with its principal customer base in India and additional capabilities and commercial links in international markets.
