Overview
Thuraya is a United Arab Emirates-based provider of regional mobile-satellite services. Its network uses geostationary satellites and L-band radio spectrum to provide voice, messaging and data connectivity in areas where terrestrial mobile networks are unavailable, unreliable or uneconomical. The service footprint covers approximately 150 countries across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia, although coverage is organized regionally rather than as a fully global satellite system. The brand serves both individual and institutional users through satellite handsets, fixed terminals, data equipment and related connectivity services. Its offerings include satellite voice calls, SMS, voicemail, missed-call notifications, call waiting and mobile data. Thuraya phones can also use conventional GSM networks in supported configurations, while GSM SIM cards may access Thuraya through compatible roaming arrangements. Thuraya 3, launched in 2008, extended the system toward eastern and southeastern Asia and Australia, but suffered a payload anomaly in April 2024 that resulted in the loss of service in regions dependent on it. Thuraya 4-NGS was launched in January 2025 and is intended to replace Thuraya 2 after orbital deployment and commissioning. The company is a mobile-satellite-services subsidiary of Yahsat, the Abu Dhabi-based satellite operator wholly owned by Mubadala Investment Company. Thuraya therefore operates as a specialized connectivity business within the wider UAE satellite and space-communications ecosystem. Its positioning is based on resilient, wide-area communications for remote, maritime, emergency, government, media, logistics and industrial use rather than on competing directly with ordinary terrestrial smartphones for mass-market urban usage.
History
Thuraya developed as a regional mobile-satellite-services system intended to provide communications over a broad area spanning Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. The name derives from Thurayya, the Arabic name associated with the Pleiades star cluster. Rather than operating as a conventional terrestrial mobile carrier, Thuraya uses geostationary satellites, gateway infrastructure and portable terminals to connect users in remote or poorly served locations. The first spacecraft, Thuraya 1, was launched on 21 October 2000 by Sea Launch. Its solar panels were defective, preventing normal commercial operation. The satellite was nevertheless used for testing and backup purposes, initially positioned over Korea, before being moved to a disposal orbit and declared at the end of its service life in 2007. Thuraya 2 was launched by Sea Launch on 10 June 2003 and became the principal spacecraft for the network’s western and central coverage areas. Positioned near 44 degrees east longitude in geosynchronous orbit, it was designed to support a large number of simultaneous voice calls through a high-gain L-band antenna and configurable spot beams. The architecture allowed the operator to concentrate capacity across separate geographic service areas while using compact mobile terminals. A third satellite was planned to extend coverage into the Far East and Australia. Its launch was delayed after the January 2007 failure of another Sea Launch mission and subsequent scheduling and weather disruptions. Thuraya 3 finally launched successfully on 15 January 2008 and was placed near 98.5 degrees east longitude. It was technically similar to Thuraya 2 but served a different regional footprint, giving the network a two-satellite operating structure for much of its mature period. The service portfolio expanded beyond basic satellite telephony. Thuraya supported voice calls from handheld and fixed terminals, text messaging, supplementary calling features and mobile packet data. GmPRS on compatible handsets provided lower-speed mobile data, while ThurayaIP offered substantially faster access through a notebook-sized terminal. The company also introduced hybrid and accessory products, including devices that combined GSM and satellite connectivity and smartphone sleeves that enabled selected Android and iPhone devices to use the satellite network. Thuraya’s technical model combines L-band communications, time-division multiple access and satellite spot beams. Its handsets include GPS receivers and normally require users to aim the antenna toward the relevant geostationary spacecraft. This provides extensive regional reach but creates practical constraints: buildings, terrain and weather can obstruct the path, and the long distance to a geostationary satellite produces noticeable conversational latency. On 15 April 2024, Thuraya 3 experienced what the operator described as an unexpected payload anomaly. Attempts to restore the affected coverage were unsuccessful, and service was withdrawn or unavailable in several markets dependent on that satellite. The event materially changed the network’s eastern coverage position and led to a force-majeure notice for affected areas. Thuraya 4-NGS was launched on 3 January 2025 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9. The spacecraft is intended to replace Thuraya 2 and form part of the next-generation network. Its launch began a multimonth process of orbital transfer, positioning and operational preparation rather than representing an instantaneous replacement of the existing service. In corporate terms, Thuraya is a subsidiary of Yahsat and sits within the satellite communications portfolio owned by Mubadala Investment Company. Its continuing role is that of a specialized regional operator serving emergency communications, maritime and aviation users, government and security organizations, media teams, field workers, humanitarian operations and commercial users that need connectivity outside terrestrial network footprints.
