History
Tet was created in 1992 as Latvia rebuilt the institutional and technical foundations of its telecommunications sector following the restoration of independence. The company became the principal operator of Latvia's fixed telecommunications infrastructure and played a central role in replacing legacy systems with modern digital networks. Its early business was associated mainly with fixed-line voice communications, but the expansion of internet access gradually became the more important driver of customer relationships and network investment. During the 2000s and 2010s, the business broadened beyond traditional telephony. Broadband access, including fiber-based services, became a core consumer offering, while television and other digital entertainment services enabled the company to package connectivity with content. For business and public-sector customers, the company developed communications, hosting, data-centre, cloud and managed-technology capabilities. This diversification reflected the wider convergence of telecommunications, information technology and media distribution. The company operated for many years under the Lattelecom name. Its ownership remained strategically significant: the Latvian state retained control, while Latvijas Mobilais Telefons became the other major shareholder. The relationship connected two of Latvia's most important communications companies without making them a single operating brand. Tet focused primarily on fixed networks, broadband, television and enterprise technology, while LMT concentrated on mobile communications. In 2019, Lattelecom rebranded as Tet. The new name was intended to support a broader identity and to signal that the company was more than a fixed-line telephone operator. Under Tet, the portfolio has continued to include household connectivity and television alongside enterprise IT, cloud, data-centre, communications and digital-transformation services. The company has also promoted technology-enabled services in areas such as energy management and smart-home use, although its core identity remains telecommunications and IT. Tet continues to operate principally in Latvia. Its importance derives not only from its commercial customer base but also from its role in national digital infrastructure, broadband availability and the delivery of technology services to organizations. As a state-controlled company, its ownership, strategic direction and relationship with other Latvian communications assets are periodically subjects of public and political attention. The available public material does not establish a separate international consumer brand presence comparable with the largest multinational telecom groups.
