Overview
Tesla Energy is the sustainable-energy division of Tesla, Inc. Its business combines photovoltaic generation, stationary battery storage, power electronics, software, and installation services for residential, commercial, industrial, and utility customers. The division was publicly introduced on April 30, 2015, when Tesla announced the Powerwall, a home battery designed to store electricity generated by solar systems or drawn from the grid. The launch extended Tesla's battery and power-management expertise beyond electric vehicles and established the brand around the idea of an integrated solar-and-storage ecosystem. Tesla's early stationary-storage work predated the Tesla Energy name. Beginning in 2012, the company installed prototype battery systems at industrial sites. These systems later evolved into the Powerpack, a larger commercial and utility product. Tesla's battery manufacturing plans were linked to Gigafactory Nevada, which began limited production of Powerwalls and Powerpacks in 2016 using cells produced elsewhere, followed by cell mass production in 2017. The division expanded substantially through Tesla's acquisition of SolarCity. Tesla announced the all-stock acquisition on August 1, 2016, and completed it on November 21, 2016, after shareholder approval and regulatory review. SolarCity had been founded in 2006 by brothers Peter and Lyndon Rive, with Elon Musk serving as chairman. It brought solar-system sales, installation, financing, and the Buffalo, New York manufacturing project that became associated with Gigafactory New York. The transaction was presented as a way to combine solar generation, batteries, electric vehicles, and software under Tesla's sustainable-energy strategy, but it was controversial because SolarCity was experiencing liquidity and debt pressures and because of Musk's relationships with the company. After the acquisition, Tesla changed SolarCity's operating model. The company has generally relied on outside manufacturers for conventional panels rather than producing all of its own photovoltaic modules. The Solar Roof, introduced in 2016, integrates photovoltaic tiles into a roof surface and reached volume production only in 2020. Tesla also offers software and monitoring through the Tesla app and provides systems for grid services and utility-scale energy management. Its storage portfolio includes the residential Powerwall, the Powerwall+ integrated with an inverter and backup controller, and the Megapack, a containerized battery product for utilities and large commercial customers. The earlier Powerpack was discontinued as a listed product after July 2022. Megapack has become a major growth product, supporting renewable-energy integration, frequency regulation, capacity support, microgrids, peak management, and other grid applications. Tesla reported that Tesla Energy deployed 223 megawatts of solar-generation capacity in 2023 and 31.4 gigawatt-hours of battery-storage products in 2024. Tesla reported 2024 Tesla Energy revenue of $10.1 billion, up 67 percent from 2023. These figures are reported by Tesla for its energy-generation and storage business and are not a separately listed company's financial statements. The division remains part of Tesla, Inc., whose wider activities include electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, software, and other energy products.
History
Tesla Energy developed from Tesla's work on lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. In 2012, Tesla began placing experimental stationary battery packs with industrial customers, creating an early foundation for commercial storage. The company announced Gigafactory Nevada in 2013, linking future stationary-storage production to a broader battery-manufacturing program. On April 30, 2015, Tesla formally introduced Tesla Energy and unveiled the Powerwall for residential use. Tesla produced several hundred pilot units at its Fremont facility and installed them during 2015. Gigafactory Nevada began limited Powerwall and Powerpack production in early 2016 and moved toward cell mass production in 2017. Tesla continued developing a broader hardware portfolio. The Solar Roof was announced in 2016 and was intended to be produced at the Buffalo facility, initially through a relationship involving Panasonic. Volume production did not begin until 2020, and Panasonic later withdrew from the joint venture and exited the solar business. Tesla introduced its own Solar Inverter in 2021 and released the Powerwall+ as an integrated storage, inverter, and backup-control product. The company also expanded utility-scale storage through Megapack, while the earlier Powerpack was eventually removed from sale. The business has increasingly emphasized storage. Tesla reported 6.54 GWh of storage deployments in 2022, 31.4 GWh in 2024, and $10.1 billion of 2024 energy revenue.
