Overview
Telus Corporation is a Canadian publicly traded communications and technology holding company headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia. Its principal Canadian operating businesses are Telus Communications, which provides fixed-line voice, broadband, television, data, security and other consumer and business services; Telus Mobility, a national wireless operator; and Telus Health, a healthcare technology and services platform. The group also owns TELUS Digital, formerly known as TELUS International, an international provider of customer-experience management, business-process outsourcing, digital transformation, trust and safety, and artificial-intelligence data services. The company’s roots lie in Alberta Government Telephones, the provincial telephone provider created in 1906. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Alberta began privatizing its telecommunications assets. The newly established Telus conducted an initial public offering on August 9, 1990, described in reference material as the largest Canadian IPO of its time. Alberta subsequently sold its remaining ownership. The former Alberta and Edmonton telecommunications brands, including AGT and ED TEL, were progressively retired, and the Telus name became the common brand across the business by the mid-1990s. A decisive expansion occurred in 1999, when Telus merged with British Columbia Telephone Company, commonly known as BC Tel. The combined company retained the Telus name and became one of Canada’s largest telecommunications operators. BC Tel’s Burnaby facilities initially served as the merged company’s headquarters; Telus later moved its corporate headquarters to Vancouver following completion of the Telus Garden complex. Telus Communications remains the group’s main Canadian connectivity business. It serves residential, small-business, enterprise and public-sector customers with internet access, mobile and fixed voice, television, data networking, security and alarm monitoring, and related digital services. Telus Mobility operates wireless networks using technologies including 5G, LTE, HSPA+ and low-power wide-area connectivity. The group also operates Koodo Mobile as a separate flanker brand aimed at more price-conscious customers, particularly younger consumers. Healthcare became a major strategic pillar after Telus acquired Emergis in 2007 for C$763 million. Emergis supplied electronic business and healthcare capabilities and formed the foundation for Telus Health. Subsequent acquisitions and investments expanded the business into electronic medical records, virtual care, clinics, pharmacy and benefits administration, mental-health and wellness services, and healthcare information exchange. In the late 2010s, Telus invested heavily in digital health ventures and acquired healthcare assets, positioning Telus Health as one of Canada’s largest healthcare information-technology providers. The international digital-services business developed through TELUS International, which listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and New York Stock Exchange in February 2021 while Telus retained majority voting control. Its acquisitions included Lionbridge AI in 2020 for approximately US$935 million and WillowTree for approximately US$1.2 billion. The business was rebranded TELUS Digital in 2024 and became wholly owned by Telus after Telus agreed to acquire the remaining shares in 2025 in a transaction valued in the reference material at approximately US$539 million; the transaction was reported as closing on October 31, 2025. TELUS therefore combines a regulated and infrastructure-intensive Canadian telecommunications base with faster-growing or more internationally distributed activities in healthcare, digital customer experience, artificial-intelligence data and business technology. Its identity is associated with nationwide connectivity, customer-service positioning, technology-enabled healthcare and a broad portfolio of social and community initiatives.
History
TELUS developed from Alberta Government Telephones, a provincial telephone provider established in 1906. AGT served Alberta for much of the twentieth century, but the province began privatizing its telecommunications assets during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Telus was established in connection with that privatization process, and its initial public offering on August 9, 1990, was described as the largest Canadian IPO to that point. Alberta sold its remaining interest the following year. By 1996, the AGT and ED TEL names had been retired in favor of the Telus identity. The company’s national scale increased substantially through its 1999 merger with British Columbia Telephone Company. The merged organization retained the Telus name. BC Tel’s facilities in Burnaby initially served as the corporate base, before Telus later established its headquarters in Vancouver after the completion of the Telus Garden complex. The merger gave Telus a particularly strong position in Western Canada and helped create the platform for national wireless, broadband and enterprise expansion. Telus Communications became the group’s principal operating subsidiary, offering fixed-line telephony, internet, television, data, security and business communications. Telus Mobility developed into a national wireless operator with 5G, LTE, HSPA+ and other network technologies. The company also introduced or maintained separate brands, including Koodo Mobile, which serves more price-sensitive wireless customers. Diversification beyond telecommunications accelerated with the acquisition of Emergis in 2007. Emergis brought electronic-business and healthcare capabilities that became the foundation of Telus Health. Telus subsequently expanded into electronic medical records, digital health platforms, virtual care, clinical and healthcare administration services, and related technology. Acquisitions and investments during the late 2010s made Telus a major Canadian healthcare information-technology provider. Telus also partnered with Babylon on a Canadian digital-health application incorporating automated symptom-checking functions. Telus pursued international growth through TELUS International, a subsidiary focused on customer experience, business-process outsourcing, digital services and artificial-intelligence data work. The business acquired Lionbridge AI in 2020, adding data labelling and annotation capabilities, and later agreed to acquire WillowTree to strengthen digital product design and development. TELUS International became publicly traded in 2021 while Telus retained voting control. In 2024 it adopted the TELUS Digital name. Telus subsequently agreed to acquire the remaining publicly held shares, and the business became wholly owned by Telus after the reported October 31, 2025 closing. The modern Telus group is consequently organized around several related but distinct growth platforms: Canadian consumer and business connectivity, mobile communications, healthcare technology and services, agriculture technology, and international digital customer-experience and artificial-intelligence services. The company remains publicly traded in Canada and continues to use the TELUS identity across its major operating businesses.
