Telit Cinterion developed from Telit’s earlier machine-to-machine and wireless-module business into a broader IoT technology provider. Its expansion combined proprietary module development with acquisitions intended to add regional engineering, positioning, industrial software, connectivity management, and automotive capabilities. The company’s modern identity reflects the integration of Telit with the former Cinterion cellular IoT business of Thales. A major early expansion occurred in 2006, when Telit acquired Bellwave and established a regional headquarters in Seoul. This strengthened its presence in the Korean and wider Asia-Pacific wireless technology markets. In January 2012, it acquired Navman Wireless OEM Solutions in California, adding capabilities associated with positioning and fleet or asset-oriented connected products. Later in 2012, Telit created the m2mAIR business unit to provide managed M2M services. The unit combined module and subscription lifecycle management through a software-as-a-service model with global wireless coverage arranged through Telefónica. Related product development included the Jupiter SL869 multi-constellation GNSS receiver and the compact SE880 system-in-package positioning product. Telit broadened its software and industrial-IoT capabilities in 2013. It acquired Florida-based ILS Technology, a provider of industrial automation and IoT cloud technology, and Illinois-based CrossBridge Solutions. It also acquired NXP’s ATOP business and a wholly owned NXP subsidiary, adding capabilities to its OEM automotive product activities. These transactions helped shift the company from a component-focused supplier toward a more integrated provider of device connectivity, industrial integration, and cloud-based IoT services. The OEM automotive product business was subsequently sold in 2019. The company continued investing in wireless and embedded technologies. In 2017, Telit acquired GainSpan for a reported price of US$8 million, adding short-range wireless and Wi-Fi-related expertise. Telit also developed products and platforms such as the BGA module, Family and Unified-Form-Factor concepts, compact GPS receiver modules, Gigabit LTE and 5G data cards, simWISE integrated SIM technology, OneEdge, deviceWISE, the Telit IoT Portal, and secureWISE. Its module portfolio expanded across cellular generations and standards, including LTE-M, NB-IoT, multiple LTE categories, and 5G based on 3GPP releases 15 and 16. Connectivity became a more central part of the strategy with the development of managed IoT subscriptions, SIM services, and the Telit NeXT cloud-native core network, launched in 2021. These services were designed to complement hardware by giving enterprise customers tools for provisioning, monitoring, connectivity control, and lifecycle management. In 2022, Telit announced two important transactions. It agreed to acquire Thales’s cellular IoT products business, including modules, gateways, data cards, and the associated IoT services platform. The transaction closed on December 31, 2022, and the combined business became known as Telit Cinterion from January 1, 2023. Telit also announced the acquisition of assets from Mobilogix, a California startup specializing in custom IoT solutions. Mobilogix added engineering resources focused on product specification, manufacturing transfer, regulatory approval, and carrier certification. Today, Telit Cinterion presents itself as an end-to-end IoT enabler. It supplies cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GNSS modules; gateways and data products; connectivity plans and IoT SIMs; embedded software; and platforms for industrial integration and deployment management. The company serves customers in more than 80 countries and maintains an international network of sales, application engineering, and research facilities. Its engineering footprint includes Boca Raton, Trieste and Cagliari, Seoul, and Bangalore. The combined Telit Cinterion business therefore spans the device, network, software, and cloud layers required to build and operate connected industrial and commercial products.
