Tasly
Chinese traditional medicine and health supplement brand
Last updated August 31, 2026
Overview
Tasly is a Chinese pharmaceutical and health-care brand headquartered in Tianjin. Founded in 1994 by Yan Xijun, it began with the modernization of traditional Chinese medicine and developed into a diversified life-and-health enterprise covering modern traditional Chinese medicines, biopharmaceuticals, chemical drugs, health products, medical services and selected investment businesses. Its principal listed operating company is Tasly Pharmaceutical Group Co., Ltd., which trades on the Shanghai Stock Exchange under ticker 600535.SS. The company’s identity is closely associated with the industrialization of traditional Chinese medicine. Rather than positioning TCM solely as a heritage or wellness category, Tasly has emphasized standardized raw materials, controlled manufacturing, dosage-form innovation, clinical research, quality systems and international regulatory work. Its best-known product is Compound Danshen Dripping Pills, marketed internationally under the Dantonic brand. The formulation is used in the cardiovascular field and has been the subject of a long-running development and regulatory program in the United States. Tasly’s modern-TCM portfolio also includes Yangxue Qingnao products, Qishen Yiqi Dripping Pills and Yiqi Fumai for Injection. Tasly’s pharmaceutical portfolio extends beyond TCM. The group has developed or commercialized biopharmaceuticals such as recombinant human prourokinase for injection, a thrombolytic product, and chemical medicines including temozolomide, eszopiclone and tadalafil. Company materials describe a therapeutic focus on cardiovascular and metabolic disease, digestive disease, oncology and immunology, and neurological or psychiatric conditions. Its research model combines internal discovery, cooperative development, product licensing, acquisitions and commercialization partnerships. Internationalization has been a recurring strategic theme. Tasly established Tasly Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in the United States in 2006 to support clinical research, regulatory affairs, technical cooperation and overseas business development. The group has also pursued international research and commercialization arrangements, including a 2015 cooperation agreement concerning T89, the development code for Compound Danshen Dripping Pills, and a proposed consumer-health joint venture with Herbalife announced in 2017. The company’s international activities are intended to connect Chinese medicine research and manufacturing capabilities with foreign regulatory, scientific and distribution networks. The wider Tasly group has historically operated beyond prescription and hospital medicines. Its broader health platform has included functional foods, health-management services, medical and rehabilitation services, botanical products, tea-based products, mineral water and other consumer-health businesses. The group has also owned or invested in non-pharmaceutical businesses, including Guotai liquor and Yunnan tea operations. This broader structure is reflected in Tasly’s use of concepts such as “great health,” digital health and intelligent health services, although the Shanghai-listed pharmaceutical company remains the core public pharmaceutical asset. A significant ownership transition occurred in 2025. China Resources Sanjiu acquired a 28% interest from Tasly’s former controlling shareholders, and the transaction completed on March 27, 2025. Tasly consequently became a non-wholly-owned subsidiary of China Resources Sanjiu and, through it, part of the China Resources group. The transaction also produced changes to the listed company’s board and senior management. Following the change, Cai Jinyong became chairman and general manager, while Xi Kai became a worker director and general manager of the company’s operating structure. Tasly’s present positioning therefore combines three elements: a listed pharmaceutical manufacturer, a recognized modern-TCM platform and a broader life-and-health group undergoing integra…
History
Tasly was established in Tianjin in 1994 by Yan Xijun. Its early development centered on the idea that traditional Chinese medicine could be industrialized through modern pharmaceutical technology, standardized production and evidence-oriented research. The company’s initial identity was therefore different from that of a conventional herbal-products seller: it sought to create reproducible dosage forms and scalable manufacturing systems for TCM-derived medicines. Compound Danshen Dripping Pills became the company’s signature product and a major vehicle for its modernization strategy. The dripping-pill dosage form helped Tasly build a recognizable commercial franchise in cardiovascular medicine while also giving the company a product around which it could organize manufacturing technology, quality control, clinical research and international regulatory work. Tasly later developed a broader modern-TCM portfolio that included Yangxue Qingnao products, Qishen Yiqi Dripping Pills and Yiqi Fumai for Injection. Tasly expanded its corporate scope during the late 1990s and early 2000s. The group entered additional consumer and health-related businesses, acquired or established operations outside its core pharmaceutical activity and developed a more diversified holding-company structure. In 2002, the pharmaceutical company was listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The listing supplied a public-capital platform for manufacturing expansion, research facilities and further product development. The company’s internationalization effort became more visible in the 2000s. Tasly Pharmaceuticals, Inc. was established in Rockville, Maryland, in 2006. The United States entity was designed to support clinical research, regulatory submissions, scientific evaluation, technical cooperation, brand promotion and overseas market development. Compound Danshen Dripping Pills entered an FDA-centered development pathway, receiving an investigational new drug-related milestone in 1997, passing Phase II clinical trials in 2010 and later reaching Phase III development. In 2015, Tasly also agreed to cooperate with Arbor Pharmaceuticals on the research and marketing of T89 in the United States. Alongside modern TCM, Tasly built a biomedical and chemical-drug platform. Tasly Bio-pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. was founded in 2001 and developed capabilities spanning research, manufacturing and commercialization. The group’s products and pipeline came to include recombinant human prourokinase for injection, chemical medicines such as temozolomide, eszopiclone and tadalafil, and additional candidates in cardiovascular, oncology, autoimmune, digestive and metabolic fields. The company described its research model as a combination of independent research, cooperative research, product introduction, acquisition and commercialization investment. Tasly’s production and research infrastructure expanded during the 2010s. The group began construction of its Huai’an biomedical industrial park in 2010, established or developed additional manufacturing and research sites, and received approvals connected with a national key laboratory for innovative Chinese medicine and a state-local joint engineering laboratory. The company presented these facilities as part of a broader effort to connect formulation science, raw-material traceability, intelligent manufacturing, clinical evidence and international regulatory requirements. The group also pursued a broader “great health” strategy. Its activities extended into functional foods, botanical materials, tea products, mineral water, health management, medical services, rehabilitation and other consumer-health categories. Guotai liquor and Yunnan tea became notable non-pharmaceutical businesses within the wider Tasly ecosystem. This diversification created a corporate house broader than the listed pharmaceutical company itself, while the pharmaceutical business remained the group’s most important public-market identity. Tasly’s development was accompanied by controversy. In 2009, pharmacologist Li Lianda publicly questioned the safety of a key Tasly product. Tasly brought a lawsuit against Li in 2013, arguing that the allegation was unfounded and influenced by his relationships with Guangzhou Pharmaceutical, a competitor. In September 2014, the Tianjin High People’s Court ruled in Tasly’s favor and ordered Li to apologize and pay CNY 300,000. The episode remains the principal scandal or legal controversy associated with the Tasly article in English-language reference material. In 2017, Tasly and Herbalife announced plans for a United States joint venture, HT Innovations LP. The proposed venture was intended to combine Tasly’s formulations, patents and clinical work with Herbalife’s scientific, regulatory and distribution capabilities. The announcement illustrated Tasly’s interest in international consumer health, although the available reference material does not establish that the proposed structure became a major operating business. A major structural change came in 2024 and 2025. China Resources Sanjiu agreed to acquire a 28% stake in Tasly Pharmaceutical from the former controlling shareholders. The share transfer was completed on March 27, 2025, making Tasly a non-wholly-owned subsidiary of China Resources Sanjiu and, through the China Resources group, part of a large state-owned pharmaceutical ecosystem. Former controlling shareholders and several directors departed, while a new board and senior-management team was appointed. Cai Jinyong became chairman and general manager, and the company’s operating priorities became more closely integrated with China Resources Sanjiu’s pharmaceutical platform. In its current form, Tasly combines a long-established modern-TCM franchise with biopharmaceutical and chemical-drug capabilities. It continues to emphasize cardiovascular and metabolic disease, digestive disease, oncology and immunology, and neurological or psychiatric conditions. Its corporate narrative now places greater weight on full-course health management, digital empowerment, intelligent manufacturing and integration with the wider China Resources health-care portfolio. Tasly’s history is consequently one of transformation: from a Tianjin modern-TCM pioneer into a listed, diversified pharmaceutical company and ultimately a controlled subsidiary within a major state-owned health-care group.
