Overview
Supermarine was a British aircraft manufacturer whose history linked the development of seaplanes, racing aircraft, naval aviation, and some of the most recognizable fighters of the twentieth century. The business began in Southampton in 1913 as Pemberton-Billing Ltd, established by Noel Pemberton Billing. Its early work concentrated on flying boats and other marine aircraft, an appropriate specialization for a company based on the south coast and close to the Royal Navy's aviation requirements. In 1916 the company adopted the Supermarine name. During the interwar period, Supermarine became especially prominent through designer Reginald J. Mitchell. Mitchell and his team produced a succession of high-performance seaplanes and racing aircraft. Supermarine aircraft won the Schneider Trophy in 1922, 1927, and 1929, and the company's success culminated in the Supermarine S.6B's victory in 1931. This work was not merely a sporting achievement: the high-speed, all-metal designs, powerful engines, stressed-skin construction, and aerodynamic refinements developed for the Schneider Trophy program informed later military aircraft. The racing program helped establish Supermarine's reputation for speed and advanced design. History
Supermarine originated in 1913 when Noel Pemberton Billing established Pemberton-Billing Ltd at Woolston, Southampton. The company initially developed aircraft for maritime environments, including flying boats and other seaplanes. In 1916 it became Supermarine Aviation Works Ltd. Its coastal location, engineering experience, and relationship with British naval aviation helped make marine aircraft a central part of its early business. The company gained international recognition through the Schneider Trophy, an influential competition for high-speed seaplanes. Supermarine aircraft won the event in 1922, 1927, and 1929, and the S.6B won the 1931 competition. Reginald J. Mitchell was the principal designer behind this progression.
