Overview
Stingray Group is a Canadian music, media and technology company headquartered in Montreal, Quebec. Established in 2007, it developed from a focused karaoke and specialty television business into a diversified operator spanning digital audio, music television, terrestrial radio, karaoke, streaming video, commercial music, advertising and related technology services. Its activities address both consumer and business-to-business markets, with services distributed through pay television, radio, mobile applications, internet platforms, hotels, airlines, retail locations and other commercial venues. The company began after Eric Boyko and Alexandre Taillefer, working with Telesystem, acquired Soundchoice in May 2007. That transaction supplied a karaoke catalogue and the basis for The Karaoke Channel, later developed under the Stingray Karaoke name. Later in 2007, Stingray acquired Galaxie, a commercial-free music television service operated by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and renamed it Stingray Music. These acquisitions established the company’s two long-running areas of expertise: curated music programming and licensed karaoke content. Alexandre Taillefer left the company in 2010. Stingray expanded through a series of acquisitions and partnerships. Its portfolio gained European reach through Music Choice Europe, as well as additional television, streaming, music-for-business and concert-video assets. The company also bought or developed brands associated with music applications, classical and jazz programming, concert films, karaoke, in-store audio and commercial advertising. Its media portfolio has included Stingray Music, Stingray Karaoke, Stingray Classica, Stingray Djazz, Stingray iConcerts, Qello Concerts by Stingray and a range of music-video and ambient television channels. A major strategic change came with the acquisition of Newcap Radio in 2018. The transaction moved Stingray beyond specialty and digital music services into large-scale terrestrial broadcasting in Canada. Newcap’s radio properties became part of Stingray Radio, making Stingray one of Canada’s largest owners of terrestrial radio stations. The corporate name was changed from Stingray Digital to Stingray Group in December 2018 to reflect the broader business. The company subsequently continued to combine broadcast assets with digital distribution, mobile applications and commercial audio services. Stingray went public in 2015 on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol RAY.A. Its market proposition has emphasized professionally programmed and manually curated music rather than relying exclusively on algorithmic recommendations. This positioning distinguishes its services from general-purpose streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music, while its business-to-business operations provide licensed audio, visual displays, advertising and related systems for retailers, hospitality venues and other commercial customers. The company’s current and recent activities include music television channels, radio stations, connected and mobile music products, karaoke applications, concert and documentary streaming, classical and jazz programming, business audio, advertising technology and digital customer-engagement tools. Stingray has also pursued international distribution, particularly in markets where pay television, commercial audio and packaged media remain important. Its portfolio changes over time through launches, acquisitions, channel consolidations and distribution agreements.
History
Stingray was founded in May 2007 by Eric Boyko and Alexandre Taillefer, with the participation of Telesystem. Its first major transaction was the purchase of Soundchoice, a karaoke company, for $6 million. The acquisition provided a catalogue of licensed karaoke songs and a karaoke television service that became The Karaoke Channel and was later branded Stingray Karaoke. Later in 2007, Stingray purchased Galaxie from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation for $65 million. Galaxie was a commercial-free music service distributed through cable television. Under Stingray, it became Stingray Music and formed the foundation of the company’s curated music-channel activities. Taillefer departed in 2010. In 2011, Stingray acquired Music Choice Europe, giving it a stronger presence in European and other international markets. During its early expansion, Stingray acquired or partnered with companies in karaoke, music television, digital streaming, commercial audio and concert programming. Transactions included assets associated with Max Trax, Concert TV, eMedia Network, Lite TV, Mood Media’s residential digital music operations in Latin America, Groupe Viva, Brava and Qello Concerts. The company also developed partnerships with Google, Air Canada, hotels and other distributors. Its mobile and internet products broadened access beyond traditional pay-TV channels. Stingray completed an initial public offering in May 2015 and began trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange on June 3 of that year under RAY.A. The public listing provided a new source of capital for acquisitions and international growth. The company continued to position professionally curated music as an alternative to mass-market algorithmic streaming, while building services for commercial locations that require licensed and programmed audio. In 2016, Stingray acquired several music-video channels associated with the MuchMusic portfolio, including MuchVibe, MuchLoud, MuchRetro and Juicebox. In 2017, it acquired Israel-based Yokee Music, whose portfolio included social karaoke applications such as Yokee, Yokee Guitar and Yokee Piano. In January 2018, Stingray acquired the assets of Qello Concerts, an over-the-top service specializing in full-length concerts, music films and documentaries. The company’s most consequential expansion occurred in radio. In May 2018, Stingray announced its intention to acquire Newcap Radio for $506 million. The transaction closed on October 26, 2018, adding a substantial network of Canadian terrestrial radio stations. The acquired operations became part of Stingray Radio, and the company changed its corporate name to Stingray Group in December 2018. In the same year, Stingray launched PalmarèsADISQ par Stingray with ADISQ, creating a channel devoted to Quebec and French-Canadian music. Stingray later consolidated some of its specialty television operations. Stingray Brava was closed and combined with Stingray Classica in March 2019. In January 2022, the company acquired InStore Audio Network; the business was subsequently rebranded Stingray Advertising. This reflected a continuing effort to connect audio programming with commercial advertising and customer-engagement services. Stingray’s business now spans consumer music, radio broadcasting, karaoke, concert streaming, specialty television and commercial media services. Its international footprint includes offices and activities in North America, Europe and Australia. The company competes with both specialized music-channel operators and large consumer streaming platforms, while seeking differentiation through curated programming, distribution partnerships and business-to-business applications.
