Overview
Sotetsu Group is a Japanese multi-industry corporate group centered on Sotetsu Holdings, Inc., its pure holding company. Its origins are associated with Sagami Railway, established in 1917. The group developed from a regional railway operator into a broader business group whose activities include rail and bus transport, retail, real estate, hotels, and other services. The group’s official site describes its brand promise as connecting excitement with peace of mind, bringing together the quality and vitality of urban life with the comfort of living along its railway lines. The group’s current company roster spans several business areas. Transport businesses include Sagami Railway and Sotetsu Bus. Retail companies include Sotetsu Station Retail and Sotetsu Rosen. Real estate businesses include Sotetsu Real Estate, Sotetsu Urban Creates, and Sotetsu Building Management. Hotel companies include Sotetsu Hotel Management and international affiliates in markets including South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Thailand. Other group activities include building and facility services, insurance, water, and energy-related businesses. The official group-company directory listed 33 companies including Sotetsu Holdings as of July 1, 2026. The group is closely associated with Yokohama and the communities served by the Sotetsu rail network, while its hotel business has supported expansion beyond its historical home market. Its official future-facing initiatives include station, train, and uniform redesign under the concept of “Safety × Security × Elegance,” railway grade-separation works, and development of more convenient and environmentally considerate communities. The holding company, rather than the group as a whole, is the listed corporate entity identified in the supplied evidence. The supplied sources do not establish a named individual founder, a group-wide owner distinct from its holding company, or a current executive roster.
History
Sotetsu Group traces its roots to Sagami Railway, founded in 1917 in what is now Chigasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture. The railway began operating a section between Chigasaki and Samukawa in 1919 and completed the Chigasaki–Hashimoto route in 1931. In 1943, Sagami Railway absorbed Jinchu Railway. The following year, the government acquired the Sagami Line and a branch line during wartime, while the group’s later identity became especially associated with the railway serving the Yokohama area. Sagami Railway resumed bus operations in 1950 and acquired land by Yokohama Station in 1952, underpinning the group’s subsequent development of transport, property, and commercial activities. During the postwar decades, Sotetsu expanded beyond railway operations. It developed housing along its railway routes and built a presence in retail and real estate around Yokohama Station. A station-front shopping facility opened in 1956; the Yokohama Station portion of the new Sotetsu Building was completed in 1971, and the Sotetsu Joinus shopping center opened in 1973. The Izumino Line opened its first section in 1976 and was extended to Shonandai in 1999. In 1990, the Japan Private Railway Association recognized Sagami Railway as a major private railway. As the group diversified, it organized businesses across transport, retail, real estate, and services. In 2006, it established a new group mark and adopted the brand message “Connecting excitement and peace of mind.” The present holding-company structure followed a major reorganization in 2009: the historic Sagami Railway changed its name to Sotetsu Holdings, while the railway business was transferred to a newly named Sagami Railway company. In 2010, the remaining bus routes operated by the holding company were transferred to Sotetsu Bus, allowing Sotetsu Holdings to become a pure holding company. Hotel operations became an important platform for expansion. The group established Sotetsu Inn in 2006 and acquired all shares in Sunroute in 2014. Sotetsu Fresa Inn openings in Kyoto in 2017 marked the start of the group’s own nationwide hotel expansion, according to the supplied evidence. The group also developed hotel operations and affiliates for overseas markets, including South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Thailand. Meanwhile, it streamlined its portfolio through business transfers and disposals, including the 2016 sale of its mining subsidiary, which ended its gravel-production business. The group marked the centenary of its founding in December 2017 and published a 100-year history in 2018. Its more recent stated direction includes making communities along the Sotetsu railway more attractive, improving station and train design under the “Safety × Security × Elegance” concept, grade-separation projects, and environmentally considerate urban development. The official company directory supplied for this dossier lists 33 group companies including Sotetsu Holdings as of July 1, 2026. Sotetsu Holdings is the group’s central holding company; the supplied Wikipedia evidence identifies it as the group’s only listed company and reports its transfer to the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market in 2022.
