Overview
SmarTone is the principal telecommunications brand of SmarTone Telecommunications Holdings Limited, a Hong Kong-listed communications company controlled by Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited. The business was established in 1992 by Sun Hung Kai Properties and ABC Communications and began operating in March 1993. Its initial network was significant in regional telecommunications history: SmarTone launched Hong Kong's first GSM mobile service and has described the network as the first GSM network in Asia. The company developed from a mobile operator into a broader connectivity provider serving consumers, businesses and institutions. The brand's core activities include mobile voice and data services, multimedia and digital communications, mobile broadband, fixed fibre broadband, enterprise connectivity and home broadband. It has operated networks across successive generations of mobile technology, including GSM, 3G, 4G LTE and 5G. SmarTone also developed roaming, mobile-content and value-added services, while its enterprise activities have included communications and connectivity solutions for corporate customers. Its fibre broadband service, introduced for home and office customers in 2014, expanded the brand beyond mobile communications. SmarTone has periodically used additional consumer brands and partnerships. It acquired P Plus Communications in 1998 and used the EXTRA brand for GSM-1800-only packages until that branding was folded into the main SmarTone dual-band proposition in 2002. Following a 2004 partnership agreement with Vodafone, the Hong Kong business adopted the SmarTone-Vodafone name in 2005. The marketing cooperation was not renewed in 2011, and the business returned to the SmarTone name from December of that year. In 2018, the company introduced Birdie, a youth-oriented proposition aimed at millennials, offering a no-contract local mobile plan and a travel data SIM. Network innovation has been central to SmarTone's positioning. The company introduced 3G in 2004, deployed HSPA+ upgrades, and launched 4G LTE in 2012 using 1800 MHz spectrum. It subsequently expanded LTE capacity and coverage through additional spectrum, refarming and deployments in railway stations and tunnels. In March 2019, SmarTone conducted Hong Kong's first simultaneous 3.5 GHz and 28 GHz 5G live field trial. It launched territory-wide 5G service on 26 May 2020 and introduced Hong Kong's first Home 5G Broadband service in September 2020, using a plug-and-play, fibre-free proposition for residential users. A public-facing 5G LAB opened at Sky100 in 2021 to demonstrate applications and network capabilities. SmarTone has also maintained a Macau presence, where it launched GSM in 2001, 3G in 2010 and 4G in 2015. The Macau operation later ended its 2G service after the territory's 2G network was decommissioned. In 2024, the Macau authorities reported that SmarTone had applied to give up its 4G licence and planned not to renew its 3G licence after expiry, indicating a likely withdrawal from Macau mobile operations. In Hong Kong, the brand remains focused on mobile and fixed connectivity, including 5G, home broadband, fibre services and corporate communications.
History
SmarTone was created in 1992 by Sun Hung Kai Properties and ABC Communications and commenced operations in March 1993. Its early GSM network gave it a distinctive position in Hong Kong's mobile market and established the company as an important early adopter of digital cellular communications in the region. In December 1993, it also introduced automatic GSM roaming, extending the usefulness of the service for customers travelling outside Hong Kong. The company expanded its portfolio and customer base through acquisitions and network development. In March 1998, it acquired P Plus Communications and used the EXTRA name for GSM-1800-only packages. EXTRA was discontinued in 2002 as the business consolidated those customers and services under a dual-band SmarTone network. The company also introduced SmarTone iN! in December 2002, a proprietary mobile multimedia portal that reflected the industry's transition from voice-only services toward mobile data and content. SmarTone entered 3G after securing a Hong Kong licence in 2001 and launched 3G service in December 2004. It later upgraded its network to HSPA+ and introduced high-speed mobile video and data capabilities. A commercial partnership with Vodafone, agreed in December 2004, led to the SmarTone-Vodafone brand in Hong Kong from April 2005. The Vodafone name was not used for the Macau business. In September 2011, SmarTone announced that the marketing cooperation would not be renewed, and the Hong Kong brand reverted to SmarTone from December 2011. The company launched its 4G LTE service in August 2012 using 1800 MHz spectrum. It expanded coverage across Hong Kong's MTR network and later added 2600 MHz capacity, spectrum refarming and other network-improvement measures. SmarTone also introduced VoLTE in 2014 for selected compatible handsets. Its fixed-line strategy developed alongside mobile operations: fibre broadband for residential and office customers was launched in 2014, giving the company a wider broadband proposition. In January 2018, SmarTone launched Birdie, a separate consumer brand intended to appeal to millennials. Birdie's initial products were a no-contract local mobile plan and a travel data SIM. The main SmarTone brand continued to focus on full-service mobile and broadband offerings, while Birdie provided a more flexible and youth-oriented alternative. SmarTone began a major 5G development programme before commercial launch. In 2016, it partnered with Ericsson on a multi-year programme involving pre-5G trials and pilot deployments. In March 2019, it conducted a live field trial using 3.5 GHz and 28 GHz frequencies simultaneously, described as Hong Kong's first trial of that kind. On 26 May 2020, the company launched commercial 5G service across Hong Kong. In September of the same year, it introduced Home 5G Broadband, promoted as Hong Kong's first residential 5G broadband service and designed to provide fast, plug-and-play, fibre-free connectivity. The company continued to expand and demonstrate its 5G network. In May 2021, it opened 5G LAB at the Sky100 Observation Deck in the International Commerce Centre. Additional network developments included spectrum acquisition, coverage on new railway extensions, and service in major tunnels and transport links. SmarTone also announced in August 2022 that it would terminate its Hong Kong 2G service on 14 October 2022, reflecting the migration of capacity and customers toward newer generations. SmarTone's Macau history began with GSM service in July 2001, followed by 3G in July 2010 and 4G in November 2015. The Macau networks were built with Nokia Networks. The operation ended 2G service in 2019 after Macau decommissioned its 2G network. In August 2024, Macau authorities reported an application by SmarTone to surrender its 4G licence and an intention not to renew its 3G licence after expiry. This marked a possible retreat from the Macau market, while the Hong Kong business remained the brand's central operation.
