Sky Cable

SKYcable is a Philippine cable television service and communications brand operated by Sky Cable Corporation. The service developed from the community-antenna television business established by Central CATV, Inc., which was incorporated on June 6, 1990. It began operating a cable television system on January 26, 1992, initially serving as a multichannel television distributor and later expanding into digital cable, cable broadband and voice-over-internet-protocol services. The business became part of a broader consolidation of Philippine cable and media interests during the 1990s and early 2000s. Sky Vision Corporation, established in 1991 as a holding company, owned interests connected with cable television, communications, television media, shopping and film distribution. In 1997, Sky Vision acquired a substantial interest in Pilipino Cable Corp., the operator of Sun Cable. A further restructuring followed in 2001, when the cable operations of SkyCable and Home Cable were combined through Beyond Cable, a venture associated with Benpres Holdings and MediaQuest Holdings. This transaction created one of the country's largest cable businesses and gave the operation a wider geographic and subscriber base. SkyCable's infrastructure and product portfolio evolved from analog community cable systems toward encrypted digital transmission. Its digital service used DVB-C transmission and subscriber-authorized set-top boxes known as Digiboxes. Smart-card technology was used to control access to encrypted programming and to reduce signal piracy. The brand also introduced higher-definition programming, including a 2008 pay-per-view broadcast of the Ryder Cup and locally produced HD sports programming through Balls HD in 2009. In 2011, it launched iRecord, a personal video recording service using a 320 GB hard drive and designed to record both standard-definition and high-definition programs. The company expanded through acquisitions as the Philippine pay-TV and broadband markets developed. In 2011, Singapore-based Sampaquita Communications acquired a 40 percent interest in SkyCable through Philippine Depositary Receipts and convertible notes, with the stated purpose of supporting broadband and cable-TV expansion. In 2012, SkyCable acquired the cable television and broadband assets and subscribers of Destiny Cable, Uni-Cable TV and Solid Broadband, strengthening its national footprint. SKYcable has also been involved in several carriage and regulatory disputes. Broadcasters GMA Network and TV5 separately complained to Philippine regulators over channel carriage, signal handling or the inclusion of free-to-air programming. The service additionally experienced a major channel-distribution dispute with Solar Entertainment in 2008, when Solar's channels were removed and replaced by channels associated with Creative Programs, Inc. These events reflected the competitive relationship between cable distributors, broadcasters and affiliated content groups in the Philippine television market. In March 2023, PLDT announced an agreement to acquire Sky Cable Corporation from Sky Vision Corporation, ABS-CBN Corporation and Lopez Inc. for ₱6.75 billion. The proposed transaction concerned Sky's broadband business and related assets and was conditioned on the termination or cessation of the pay-TV and cable businesses. The Philippine Competition Commission subsequently allowed the transaction to proceed, and Sky announced a planned end to traditional cable operations in February 2024. Before completion, however, ABS-CBN and PLDT mutually agreed in February 2024 not to proceed with the sale, and the planned shutdown was shelved. A later transition plan described the discontinuation of premium channels on the traditional platform and the introduction of a more limited SKYcable Lite service alongside a move toward fiber-based distribution. SkyCable traces its corporate origins to Central CATV, Inc., incorporated in 1990. Sky Vision Corporation was formed the following year as a holding company with interests in cable television and other media-related activities. The cable service began operating on January 26, 1992, as a community-antenna television system in the Philippines. Its service scope later expanded to include cable internet, digital television and voice-over-internet-protocol communications. Central CATV received a 28-year provisional franchise in 1995 under Republic Act 7969 to establish, construct, maintain and operate a community-antenna television system. In 1997, Sky Vision acquired 47 percent of Pilipino Cable Corp., operator of Sun Cable, for a reported ₱900 million. The acquisition broadened the group's cable interests and supported the development of a larger national television-distribution platform. A major consolidation took place in 2001. Benpres Holdings and the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company entered into a master consolidation agreement concerning their interests in SkyCable. In July of that year, Unilink Communications Corp., operator of Home Cable, combined its cable-TV operations with SkyCable. The resulting Beyond Cable venture was controlled through interests associated with Benpres Holdings and MediaQuest Holdings. Beyond Cable Holdings was incorporated in December 2001. The service continued to modernize its technology during the 2000s. SkyCable adopted DVB-C digital transmission and used encrypted Digibox set-top boxes with ISO/IEC 7816-compliant smart cards to authenticate subscribers and protect programming from unauthorized access. It introduced high-definition pay-per-view programming in 2008 and locally produced HD programming through Balls HD in 2009. In 2011, the company introduced iRecord, a personal video recorder with a 320 GB drive capable of storing both standard-definition and high-definition programs. Ownership and scale changed again during the following decade. In May 2011, Sampaquita Communications acquired a 40 percent interest in SkyCable through Philippine Depositary Receipts and convertible notes. The investment was intended to finance the expansion of the company's cable television and broadband services. In May 2012, SkyCable acquired cable television and broadband assets and subscribers from Destiny Cable, Uni-Cable TV and Solid Broadband. This transaction further consolidated the Philippine cable market around the SkyCable platform. The brand's history also includes recurring disputes over carriage and signal distribution. In 2003, GMA Network complained that SkyCable had moved its signal from channel 12 without approval from the National Telecommunications Commission. Regulators ordered SkyCable to carry the free-to-air signal and to stop changing channel assignments without the required authorization. SkyCable sought reconsideration and later appealed, but the challenges did not overturn the directive. In 2008, Solar Entertainment removed six channels from SkyCable's lineup, after which SkyCable substituted channels linked to Creative Programs, Inc. In 2011, TV5 complained that SkyCable had refused to carry AksyonTV; the channel was subsequently added to the digital lineup. SkyCable also responded in 2015 to a GMA complaint concerning signal interruptions during the KalyeSerye segment of Eat Bulaga!. In March 2023, PLDT announced an agreement to acquire 100 percent of Sky Cable Corporation from Sky Vision Corporation, ABS-CBN Corporation and Lopez Inc. The proposed ₱6.75 billion transaction focused on the broadband business and related assets and required the cessation of the pay-TV and cable operations. The Philippine Competition Commission allowed the transaction to proceed in January 2024. Sky then announced a planned discontinuation of cable television service, but ABS-CBN and PLDT mutually abandoned the transaction in February 2024, and the proposed shutdown was shelved.
