Overview
Silversea Cruises is a luxury cruise and expedition travel brand founded in 1994 through a joint venture between V-Ships of Monaco, formerly known as the Vlasov Group, and the Lefebvre d’Ovidio family of Rome. The founders had previously been associated with Sitmar Cruises. From its beginning, Silversea positioned itself above the mainstream cruise market through relatively small ships, high crew-to-guest service, suites rather than conventional cabins, and an all-inclusive fare structure. Its original pricing model incorporated items such as gratuities, beverages, port charges, travel insurance, and selected shore excursions, helping establish the brand as an ultra-premium alternative to larger cruise operators. The line entered service with Silver Cloud in April 1994 and added sister ship Silver Wind in January 1995. Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper followed around the turn of the century, expanding the fleet while retaining the intimate scale and design language associated with the brand. Although Silversea was founded in Europe and headquartered in Monaco, it developed an important North American customer base and established a sales office in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where much of its early commercial organization was drawn from former Sitmar employees. A major strategic development came in the 2000s, when Silversea expanded from conventional luxury cruising into expedition travel. In 2007 it acquired the former World Discoverer, renamed Prince Albert II and later Silver Explorer, and created an expedition division intended to combine remote-destination itineraries with luxury accommodation and service. The division subsequently grew through operations in the Galápagos Islands and the acquisition or introduction of additional expedition vessels, including Silver Galapagos, Silver Discoverer, Silver Origin, and Silver Endeavor. Expedition voyages became an important part of the brand’s identity, covering polar regions, remote coasts, wildlife destinations, and culturally distinctive ports. The fleet later moved toward larger luxury vessels while maintaining an emphasis on suites, multiple dining venues, destination immersion, and included services. Silver Spirit, introduced in 2009, represented a new ship class for the company. Silver Muse entered service in 2017, followed by sister ships Silver Moon and Silver Dawn. In 2018, Royal Caribbean acquired a majority stake in Silversea for approximately $1 billion. Royal Caribbean Group purchased the remaining shares in 2020, making Silversea a wholly owned brand within the group. The acquisition gave Silversea access to the financial, operational, and shipbuilding resources of a much larger cruise company while preserving its separate luxury positioning. The Evolution-class Silver Nova entered service in 2023 as the line’s largest vessel at that time, using an asymmetrical design and expanded public spaces. Silver Ray followed in 2024. Alongside its conventional luxury fleet, Silversea continues to market expedition products, including Galápagos voyages and polar itineraries. Its present proposition combines all-inclusive luxury, small-ship access to global destinations, suite accommodation, destination-focused programming, and an expedition offering aimed at travelers seeking remote environments without giving up premium hospitality.
History
Silversea Cruises was established in 1994 by V-Ships of Monaco and Antonio Lefebvre d’Ovidio of Rome. Both sides had prior experience through Sitmar Cruises, and the new company adopted a business model designed to distinguish it from mass-market cruising. Silversea emphasized small ships, suite accommodation, attentive service, and an unusually broad all-inclusive fare. The original fare concept included gratuities, beverages, port charges, travel insurance, and selected shore excursions. Because the company expected a large share of its early guests to come from North America, it opened a sales office in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, while retaining its European identity and Monaco headquarters. Silver Cloud entered service in April 1994, followed by Silver Wind in January 1995. The line expanded with Silver Shadow in 2000 and Silver Whisper in 2001. These later ships were enlarged versions of the first vessels and carried roughly one hundred more guests, allowing Silversea to grow without abandoning its relatively intimate operating model. In 2001, Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio became chairman, succeeding his brother Francesco and later becoming the family’s principal owner. Silversea broadened its business in 2007 by creating an expedition division. It acquired the former World Discoverer, renamed Prince Albert II and later Silver Explorer, and recruited expedition specialist Conrad Combrink to develop a luxury expedition proposition. The move brought Silversea into polar and remote-destination cruising, where the brand combined specialist guides and wildlife-oriented programming with premium accommodation and service. In 2009, the company introduced Silver Spirit, the first ship in a new class that expanded onboard capacity and amenities. The expedition portfolio grew further in the Galápagos. In 2012, Silversea acquired Canodros S.A., an Ecuadorian tourism company operating in the islands, together with the vessel Galapagos Explorer II. The ship was integrated into the expedition business and later operated as Silver Galapagos. In 2013, Silversea announced the addition of Silver Discoverer, formerly Clipper Odyssey, which entered service in 2014 after a christening in Singapore and an inaugural voyage along Australia’s Kimberley Coast. A new phase of fleet expansion began with Silver Muse, delivered by Fincantieri in April 2017 and placed into service in the Mediterranean. Silversea subsequently ordered Silver Moon and Silver Dawn, sister ships that entered service in the following years. In June 2018, Royal Caribbean announced that it would purchase a majority stake in Silversea from Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio. The transaction, valued at approximately $1 billion, closed in July. Under Royal Caribbean ownership, Silversea ordered additional vessels, including Evolution-class ships and a new Galápagos expedition vessel. Royal Caribbean Group acquired the remaining Silversea shares in July 2020 in exchange for Royal Caribbean Group stock. That year also saw the delivery of Silver Origin, a ship purpose-built for the Galápagos and the first Silversea vessel designed and completed under the new ownership structure. In 2022, Silversea purchased the former Crystal Endeavor, renamed it Silver Endeavor, and added a high-end expedition yacht with polar capability. Silver Nova, the first Evolution-class ship, was delivered in 2023 and introduced an asymmetrical design, larger public spaces, and a new approach to arranging onboard venues. The ship was named in January 2024 during the company’s thirtieth-anniversary year. Silver Ray, the second Evolution-class vessel, was delivered in May 2024 and began service later that year. Leadership also changed during this period: Barbara Muckermann became president and chief executive in 2022, and Bert Hernandez replaced her as president in 2024. Silversea now operates as Royal Caribbean Group’s luxury and expedition brand, offering worldwide ocean voyages alongside specialist itineraries in polar regions, the Galápagos, and other remote destinations.
