Schramsberg Vineyards

Schramsberg Vineyards is a sparkling wine producer located on the Napa Valley Diamond Mountain property. For 60 years, the Davies family and Schramsberg team have focused on creating wines that reflect the passion and experience of the people behind each bottle. The estate's history dates back to the 19th century, when German immigrant Jacob Schram started his winery on Diamond Mountain. In 1965, founders Jack and Jamie Davies restored the abandoned property and set out to produce world-class sparkling wine. Later that year, the 1965 Blanc de Blancs was made, the first commercial use of Chardonnay in American sparkling wine. Schramsberg's Blanc de Blancs was used for President Nixon's 1972 'Toast to Peace' with China's Premier Zhou Enlai, and its sparkling wines have been served at official State functions by every U.S. Presidential administration since.

Schramsberg's history dates back to the 19th century, when German immigrant Jacob Schram first made his home and started his winery on Diamond Mountain. In 1965, after a yearlong search, founders Jack and Jamie Davies discovered a run-down winery on the mountainside above St. Helena. The 19th century Victorian mansion presided over the tangled remains of once stately gardens and underground cellars. The historic Schramsberg property had been abandoned for years, but the Davies were looking for a challenge. On that day they decided Schramsberg would be brought back to life. The Davies had an ambition to make wine, but not just any wine. They were setting out to produce a world-class sparkling wine, and it was a lofty goal. Later that year, the 1965 Blanc de Blancs came to be, and would be the first commercial use of Chardonnay in American sparkling wine. Over one hundred years later Jack and Jamie Davies would restore the Schramsberg estate in 1965. They set out to produce sparkling wine – specifically, 'America's most prestigious, select and admired sparkling wine; chosen for special guests, special gifts, pampering one's self and expressing one's taste in unique products.' Through the decades, this spirit of innovation earned Schramsberg and the Davies worldwide praise and recognition. Schramsberg has also played a role in world history. The Blanc de Blancs was used for President Nixon's 1972 'Toast to Peace' with China's Premier Zhou Enlai. Schramsberg's sparkling wines have been served at official State functions by every U.S. Presidential administration since. In 2000, Hugh Davies became Head Winemaker. In 2004, the first vintage of J. Davies Diamond Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon (2001) was released, named in honor of Jack Davies. The Davies family chaired the Napa Valley Wine Auction. Hugh Davies married Monique Nelson in the olive grove on the estate. In 2005, Hugh was named as CEO/President of Schramsberg Vineyards and Jamie remained chairman. In 2006, the debut of J. Schram Rosé (1998) was released September 15, and a new production building was completed. Sean Thompson was hired as Assistant Winemaker. In 2008, a new Visitor Center was completed. In 2009, Schramsberg Vineyards received final certification under both the Napa Green Winery program and the Napa Green Certified Land program. In 2010, Schramsberg Vineyards installed a 315 kilowatt-hours solar array consisting of 1,655 panels.
