Overview
Safilo Group S.p.A. is an Italian eyewear company headquartered in Padua and one of the long-established participants in the global optical and sunglasses industry. The business traces its industrial origins to a lens and frame production site established in 1878 at Calalzo di Cadore in the Venetian Alps. In 1934, Guglielmo Tabacchi acquired the site and established Safilo, creating the company that later became a major Italian designer, manufacturer, and distributor of eyewear. Safilo’s portfolio spans prescription optical frames, sunglasses, sports eyewear, ski goggles, ski helmets, and cycling helmets. The group operates both proprietary house brands and licensed brands associated with fashion, lifestyle, sports, and entertainment. Its portfolio has included Safilo’s own brands as well as names such as Smith, Carrera, Polaroid Eyewear, Blenders Eyewear, Privé Revaux, and licensed fashion labels. Smith, acquired in the 1990s, strengthened the group’s position in performance eyewear and snow sports. The company has also developed and manufactured eyewear for major international fashion houses, although the importance of individual licensing relationships has changed as luxury groups have increasingly brought eyewear operations in-house. The company expanded from an Italian manufacturing base into an international commercial network during the 1970s and 1980s. It opened sales offices across Europe, developed patented hinge technology, introduced commercially successful sunglass designs, acquired or took control of overseas businesses, and entered the Milan Stock Exchange in 1987. During the 1990s it expanded into Asian and other international markets, acquired Smith Sports Optics and Carrera Optyl, and broadened its product and brand capabilities. Safilo’s distribution model has historically combined wholesale operations, subsidiaries, and independent distribution partners. The group has maintained wholly owned subsidiaries in numerous countries and works with distribution partners in additional markets. It also operated Solstice Sunglasses retail stores in the United States, but sold that business in 2019 as it refocused on wholesale distribution. In the late 2010s and early 2020s, Safilo placed greater emphasis on digitally native and direct-to-consumer-oriented brands. It completed acquisitions of Blenders Eyewear and Privé Revaux in 2020, adding businesses with strong e-commerce profiles. Manufacturing has been consolidated over time. Safilo has produced eyewear in Italian facilities and has also operated plants in China and the United States. The group closed or sold several sites, including the Martignacco facility in Italy in 2020, the Ormož plant in Slovenia in 2021, and the Longarone facility in Italy in 2023. These changes reflected efforts to adapt the production footprint and cost structure to changing market conditions. Safilo remains positioned as an international eyewear specialist combining Italian design heritage, technical manufacturing, brand licensing, and global distribution. Its sustainability work has included the use of regenerated ECONYL nylon in selected products, collaboration with Aquafil, support for products made with recovered ocean-bound plastic through The Ocean Cleanup, and participation in The Fashion Pact. The company also maintains a private collection relating to the history of eyewear and Safilo. Its continuing business includes proprietary brands, licensed collections, sports products, optical products, and digitally oriented consumer brands.
History
Safilo’s industrial history begins in 1878, when a production site in Calalzo di Cadore, in the Venetian Alps, began making lenses and frames. Guglielmo Tabacchi acquired the facility in 1934 and founded Safilo. The new company became an important part of Italy’s developing eyewear industry and eventually grew from a regional manufacturer into an international group. After Tabacchi’s death in 1974, control passed to his sons. During the 1970s, Safilo expanded its commercial presence by opening sales offices in several European countries. The company also developed product and engineering capabilities, including the patented Elasta hinge, and introduced the UFO sunglass design, which became one of its notable products of that era. The 1980s brought a stronger focus on designer eyewear and international corporate development. Safilo obtained full control of the American company Starline Optical Corporation and acquired the Friuli-based sunglass manufacturer Oxsol. It listed on the Milan Stock Exchange in 1987. In 1989, Safilo began producing eyewear for Gucci and subsequently added eyewear programs for other brands associated with the group then known as PPR, including Yves Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, and Alexander McQueen. In the 1990s, Safilo expanded into Asia and established or enlarged operations in markets including Hong Kong, Japan, Brazil, and South Africa, while continuing to add European branches. The acquisition of Smith Sports Optics in the United States and Carrera Optyl in Austria broadened the group’s geographic and product reach. Smith became especially relevant to Safilo’s sports and outdoor eyewear activities. The early 2000s involved ownership, financing, logistics, and retail changes. In 2001, chairman Vittorio Tabacchi launched a takeover bid intended to obtain full ownership of the group, and Safilo inaugurated a centralized warehouse at its Padua headquarters. Roberto Vedovotto served as chief executive from 2002 to 2006 and addressed the group’s debt burden through a transaction involving the sale of a substantial minority interest to Crédit Suisse First Boston. Safilo returned to the Milan Stock Exchange in December 2005. Vedovotto later returned as chief executive in November 2009. Safilo also entered United States retail through the Solstice Sunglasses chain, acquired in 2002. The group’s ownership structure changed again in the late 2010s. HAL Holdings, through Multibrands Italy B.V., increased its interest to 49.8 percent in January 2019. That year Safilo sold Solstice, reflecting a decision to concentrate more closely on wholesale distribution rather than operate a significant retail chain. From 2020 onward, Safilo pursued a combination of digital-brand expansion, sustainability initiatives, and industrial consolidation. It acquired Blenders Eyewear and Privé Revaux, two brands with strong digitally native and e-commerce characteristics. It also worked with The Ocean Cleanup on sunglasses incorporating recovered ocean-waste plastic and introduced ECONYL regenerated nylon in selected products through a partnership with Aquafil. The company closed or sold several production sites, including Martignacco in Italy in 2020, Ormož in Slovenia in 2021, and Longarone in Italy in 2023. These closures reduced and reshaped the historical manufacturing footprint while Safilo continued to produce through facilities in Italy, China, and the United States. Safilo’s present identity combines house brands, licensed fashion and lifestyle collections, optical products, performance eyewear, protective sports equipment, and international distribution. The company joined The Fashion Pact in 2022 and renewed its Levi’s partnership in 2024 through 2029. It also preserves a private collection documenting the history of eyewear and the company’s own development.
