Regionstog

Regionstog A/S was a Danish regional railway company responsible for operating services on private railway lines in Region Zealand. It was created in 2009 through the consolidation of three local railway companies: Vestsjællands Lokalbaner A/S, Østbanen and Lollandsbanen A/S. The consolidation brought several regional passenger-rail operations under a single operating company and gave Regionstog administrative offices in Maribo and Holbæk. The company's network included the Lolland Line, the East Line and the Tølløse Line. These routes connected smaller towns and regional centers in Zealand and Lolland with destinations including Nakskov, Nykøbing Falster, Køge, Faxe Ladeplads, Rødvig, Holbæk and Tølløse. The lines formed part of Denmark's privately operated local-railway system rather than the national intercity and metropolitan rail networks associated with DSB and Copenhagen S-trains. The routes operated by the constituent companies had substantially older histories than Regionstog itself. The Lolland Line opened in 1874, the East Line in 1879, and the Tølløse Line in 1901. Passenger volumes reported for the associated routes illustrate the local importance of the system: approximately 875,000 passengers were recorded for the Lolland Line, around 900,000 for the East Line and about 555,000 for the Tølløse Line. These figures are route-level historical descriptions rather than confirmed annual results for Regionstog as a corporation. Regionstog's role was primarily operational. It provided regional train services on lines serving communities outside Denmark's main metropolitan rail corridors, supporting local mobility and connections between smaller municipalities. The company was part of a broader Danish structure in which regional authorities and private railway companies played an important role in maintaining passenger services on local lines. In 2015, Regionstog merged with Lokalbanen A/S. The combination created Lokaltog A/S, which became the successor railway company for the relevant local-railway operations. Regionstog therefore no longer operates as a separate company or consumer-facing railway brand. Its historical significance lies in the 2009 consolidation of several Zealand-area local railway operators and in the subsequent rationalization of Danish regional railway administration.

Regionstog was established in 2009 as part of a restructuring of Denmark's private local-railway sector. The new company was formed by merging Vestsjællands Lokalbaner A/S, Østbanen and Lollandsbanen A/S. Rather than representing a newly built railway, Regionstog brought together established operations whose routes and infrastructure had been developed over many decades. The company's principal operating area was Region Zealand. Its railway services connected regional towns and smaller communities across western Zealand, eastern Zealand and Lolland. The Lolland Line ran between Nakskov and Nykøbing Falster over approximately 50.2 kilometers. The route had originally opened in 1874 and was associated with reported annual passenger use of approximately 875,000. The East Line connected Køge with Faxe Ladeplads and Rødvig. It covered approximately 46.2 kilometers, opened in 1879 and was reported to carry around 900,000 passengers. The Tølløse Line connected Holbæk, Tølløse and Slagelse across approximately 50.8 kilometers; its railway opened in 1901 and the route was reported to carry approximately 555,000 passengers. These routes served a different transport function from Denmark's mainline intercity services. Regionstog's trains provided local and regional connections, helping link smaller settlements to larger towns and interchange points. The company's administrative offices were located in Maribo and Holbæk, reflecting its geographically distributed operating area. Some descriptions of the surrounding regional railway system also identify the Odsherred Line between Holbæk and Nykøbing Sjælland, a route of approximately 49.4 kilometers opened in 1899 and associated with approximately 1.1 million passengers. However, the core description of Regionstog identifies the company as responsible for three private railway lines—the Tølløse Line, East Line and Lolland Line. The Odsherred Line should therefore not be attributed to Regionstog without additional source clarification. Regionstog remained a separate operator for approximately six years. In 2015 it was merged with Lokalbanen A/S, producing Lokaltog A/S. The merger replaced the two-company structure with a unified operator for a substantial part of Zealand's local railway network. Following that transaction, Regionstog became defunct as an independent corporate and operating brand.
