Overview
Prior Norge was a Norwegian egg and white-meat processing business organized around the agricultural-cooperative system. Its institutional predecessor was Norske Eggcentral A/L, founded on 25 October 1919 when six local egg centers joined to create a national cooperative structure. The organization emerged at a time when household poultry keeping was widespread in Norway: approximately 180,000 Norwegian households, or about 30 percent of all households, kept chickens. In its early years the business was overwhelmingly associated with eggs; by 1929, eggs represented 98 percent of Norske Eggcentral’s revenue, while white meat accounted for the remaining 2 percent. The cooperative initially concentrated on collection, quality control, grading, and distribution. In 1934 it introduced centralized sorting and marking of eggs and launched the Sol-egg brand. Egg availability was affected by rationing during and after the Second World War, although rationing was suspended in 1949. During the 1950s the organization expanded its use of active advertising and consumer marketing. In 1977, Sol-egg was replaced by the Prior name across both eggs and white-meat products, establishing the brand identity that later became associated with Norwegian poultry and egg products. The business changed substantially during the 1990s. Norwegian chicken production shifted from the traditional domestic breed toward the meatier Scottish Ross breed, reflecting the growing importance of poultry meat in the company’s portfolio. In 1999 the organization adopted the name Prior Norge. In 2001 it was reorganized as a corporation, with egg-packing facilities and slaughterhouses owned by three regional companies. Those regional entities were merged in 2003, creating a more consolidated operating structure. By 2005, white meat had overtaken eggs as the larger source of revenue, marking a strategic and commercial shift from a primarily egg-centered cooperative toward a broader poultry-processing business. On 1 November 2006, Prior merged with Gilde Norsk Kjøtt, another major Norwegian cooperative meat organization, to form Nortura. Prior Norge therefore ceased to exist as an independent company, but the Prior name continued as a consumer-facing brand within Nortura’s portfolio. The brand’s historical identity remains connected to eggs, chicken, and Norwegian cooperative food production, while the corporate activities formerly conducted by Prior Norge became part of Nortura’s integrated meat and egg business.
History
Prior Norge’s history began with the creation of Norske Eggcentral A/L on 25 October 1919. Six local egg centers formed the national union to coordinate the collection and handling of eggs within Norway’s agricultural-cooperative system. The organization was established when household poultry production was common: around 180,000 Norwegian households, equivalent to approximately 30 percent of all households, kept chickens. The early business was strongly concentrated on eggs. In 1929, eggs contributed 98 percent of revenue and white meat only 2 percent. The cooperative’s early functions included quality sorting, grading, and distribution. In 1934 it began centrally sorting and marking all eggs and introduced the Sol-egg brand. The Norwegian egg market experienced wartime and postwar rationing, but egg rationing ended in 1949. During the 1950s the organization began more active consumer marketing through advertising. In 1977, Sol-egg was replaced by Prior on eggs and white-meat products, giving the business a unified commercial identity. During the 1990s, Norwegian chicken production moved from the traditional national breed to the meatier Ross breed, a Scottish breed used to support poultry-meat production. This change coincided with the increasing commercial importance of white meat. The organization changed its name to Prior Norge in 1999. Two years later it was reorganized as a corporation, with egg-packing facilities and slaughterhouses held by three regional companies. These regional companies were merged in 2003, consolidating the operating structure. The company’s product mix continued to change. By 2005, white meat had exceeded eggs in revenue, making poultry meat the larger part of the business. On 1 November 2006, Prior Norge merged with Gilde Norsk Kjøtt to establish Nortura. The Prior company was consequently absorbed into the new cooperative group, although the Prior brand survived and continued to be used for egg and white-meat products.
