Overview
Post Consumer Brands is the consumer packaged foods business of Post Holdings and the modern successor to the Post cereal enterprise established by C. W. Post in Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1895. The business began with Postum, a roasted-grain beverage positioned as a caffeine-free alternative to coffee, and introduced Grape-Nuts in 1897. Its early growth relied heavily on product advertising, branded grocery distribution, and the development of shelf-stable foods for household consumption. Over time, the Post business expanded far beyond its original cereal and beverage portfolio through acquisitions and corporate reorganizations. The historical company became part of the larger General Foods system after Postum acquired a controlling interest in Clarence Birdseye’s frozen-food business in 1929 and changed its name to General Foods Corporation. General Foods was subsequently acquired by Philip Morris Companies in 1985 and combined with Kraft-related assets. The cereal business was later sold to Ralcorp in 2007, separating it from the broader General Foods and Kraft portfolios. Ralcorp spun off Post Foods as an independent public company through the creation and initial public offering of Post Holdings in 2012. Post Foods expanded materially under Post Holdings. It acquired Michael Foods in 2014, adding a substantial food platform beyond cereal, and bought MOM Brands in 2015. MOM Brands brought brands such as Malt-O-Meal, and the transaction made Post one of the largest breakfast-cereal businesses in the United States. Following that acquisition, Post Foods adopted the Post Consumer Brands name. The company later added Weetabix, including the U.S. Barbara’s business, in 2017. Some MOM Brands and Weetabix cereal activities were subsequently organized under the Three Sisters Cereal name. The portfolio has continued to broaden. Post acquired the Peter Pan peanut butter brand from Conagra Brands in a transaction announced in 2020 and completed in January 2021. Peter Pan became the initial brand associated with Post’s Animated Brands group. In 2021, Post announced and completed the acquisition of TreeHouse Foods’ ready-to-eat cereal business, strengthening its private-label cereal activities after an earlier proposed transaction had faced antitrust concerns. In 2023, Post Holdings announced an agreement to acquire pet-food brands including 9Lives, Kibbles ’n Bits, and Gravy Train, extending Post Consumer Brands into pet nutrition. Today, Post Consumer Brands is centered on branded and private-label consumer foods. Its cereal portfolio includes Honey Bunches of Oats, Grape-Nuts, Pebbles, Honeycomb, Golden Crisp, Bran Flakes, Waffle Crisp, Malt-O-Meal, Weetabix, and Barbara’s products. It also manages Peter Pan peanut butter and a group of pet-food brands. The business competes through a mix of nationally recognized brands, value-oriented offerings, innovation across cereal formats, and manufacturing and retail relationships in North America. Although its roots are in breakfast, its current scope reflects Post Holdings’ broader strategy of assembling established food categories and operating them as distinct consumer businesses.
History
C. W. Post founded the original Postum Cereal Company in Battle Creek, Michigan, after developing Postum as a roasted-grain beverage and coffee substitute. Postum was introduced in 1895 and marketed as a health-oriented, naturally caffeine-free drink. The company introduced Grape-Nuts in 1897, establishing the cereal business that would become its enduring foundation. A corn-flake product launched as Elijah’s Manna in 1904 was renamed Post Toasties in 1907 after resistance to the original biblical reference. The early business was notable for its aggressive use of advertising and for the importance it gave to branded consumer education. C. W. Post died in 1914, after which his daughter Marjorie Merriweather Post assumed control. During her leadership, the company continued to develop its commercial organization and attract experienced managers. Postum Cereal became a publicly traded company in 1922 and then pursued an extensive acquisition program. Between 1925 and 1928, the company acquired businesses and brands including Jell-O, Igleheart Brothers and its Swans Down flour, Minute Tapioca, Walter Baker, Franklin Baker, Log Cabin syrup, Hellmann’s mayonnaise, Sanka, Maxwell House, Calumet baking powder, and La France laundry products. These transactions transformed Postum from a cereal specialist into a diversified packaged-goods company. In 1929, it acquired a controlling interest in the General Foods Company, associated with Clarence Birdseye’s frozen-food technology, and adopted the General Foods name. The combination helped create one of the most important packaged-food companies in the United States. General Foods developed frozen-food distribution and retail equipment alongside its product portfolio. The business later became part of Philip Morris Companies in 1985 and was combined with Kraft assets. In 2007, the cereal operations were sold to Ralcorp. Ralcorp subsequently separated Post Foods from its other operations through the creation of Post Holdings, whose initial public offering took place in 2012. Post Holdings used acquisitions to expand Post Foods beyond traditional cereal. Michael Foods was acquired in 2014, followed by MOM Brands in 2015. MOM Brands added Malt-O-Meal and related cereal products and helped make Post one of the largest U.S. breakfast-cereal companies. Post Foods then adopted the Post Consumer Brands name. In 2017, Post Holdings acquired Weetabix, including the U.S. Barbara’s business. Certain cereal activities from MOM Brands and Weetabix were later grouped under Three Sisters Cereal. The company entered additional consumer categories through the acquisition of Peter Pan peanut butter from Conagra Brands, completed in January 2021. Post also acquired TreeHouse Foods’ ready-to-eat cereal business in 2021, reinforcing its role in private-label cereal manufacturing. In 2023, Post Holdings announced a pet-food acquisition involving 9Lives, Kibbles ’n Bits, and Gravy Train. These developments show the evolution of Post Consumer Brands from a historic cereal company into a diversified North American operator spanning branded foods, private-label products, spreads, and pet nutrition.
