Overview
POSCO Group is a South Korean industrial group whose historical foundation is POSCO, one of the country's principal steelmakers. Its operating base includes large integrated steelworks in Pohang and Gwangyang, together with affiliated businesses involved in trading, construction, engineering, information technology, energy, mobility components and advanced materials. The group is best known internationally for supplying flat and long steel products to automotive, shipbuilding, construction, infrastructure, machinery and appliance customers. The group’s business identity has broadened beyond conventional steelmaking. Under POSCO Holdings, the portfolio is organized around steel and a set of future-oriented businesses including secondary-battery materials, lithium and nickel, hydrogen, energy, construction and infrastructure, and agri-bio. Battery-related activities cover upstream resource development and refining as well as cathode and anode materials and recycling-related capabilities. This strategy is intended to connect raw-material supply, processing and materials production rather than treating battery materials as an isolated product line. Steel remains the industrial core. POSCO has promoted high-grade automotive steel, electrical steel and other specialized products supported by technical assistance, processing centers and logistics facilities. Its solution-marketing approach combines steel products with application engineering, customer support and market-specific services. The group has also publicized a global automotive-materials network comprising production branches, processing centers and logistics operations, positioning itself as a technical partner to vehicle manufacturers rather than only as a commodity supplier. POSCO Group’s transformation has included corporate restructuring. POSCO Holdings was launched in 2022 as a holding and portfolio-management company following a vertical spin-off. The structure separates group-level strategy, capital allocation and new-business development from operating companies such as POSCO. POSCO Energy was subsequently merged into POSCO International in January 2023, strengthening the latter’s integrated LNG and energy platform. POSCO International combines trading and resource activities with energy, materials and selected industrial businesses. The group’s growth agenda also emphasizes decarbonization. Hydrogen-reduction ironmaking, renewable and lower-carbon energy, electric-arc-furnace investment and resource security are recurring themes in its public strategy. These initiatives respond to the high emissions intensity of primary steelmaking while also supporting customers seeking lower-carbon materials. POSCO Group’s public communications increasingly present steel, strategic resources and energy as mutually reinforcing parts of a broader industrial ecosystem. POSCO Group operates internationally through overseas production, processing, trading, resource and project activities. Its commercial reach extends across Asia, North America, Europe, Latin America and other resource-producing regions, although the scale and structure of individual affiliates vary. The group therefore functions both as a major steel producer and as a diversified Korean industrial holding group. Its current positioning is centered on combining steel expertise with strategic resources and materials for the energy transition, while retaining steel as the foundation of the portfolio.
History
POSCO Group’s history is rooted in the development of South Korea’s modern steel industry. POSCO established its main production base in Pohang and later expanded at Gwangyang, creating the integrated facilities and technical capabilities that became the foundation of the group. Steel production supported the growth of Korean manufacturing and became closely associated with the country’s industrial development. Over time, POSCO moved from a primarily domestic producer toward an international supplier with overseas production, processing, logistics and customer-service operations. The group’s steel strategy increasingly emphasized higher-value applications. Automotive materials became a major focus, with the company supplying advanced grades and supporting customers through engineering and processing capabilities. POSCO’s public communications described a network of production branches, processing centers and logistics sites designed to provide customized service to vehicle manufacturers around the world. Its solution-marketing program further developed this model by integrating market analysis, product development, technical support, promotion and relationship management. POSCO also diversified into trading, construction, engineering, information technology, energy and resource businesses. POSCO International became an important global trading and energy affiliate, while other group companies broadened the organization’s exposure to infrastructure, mobility components and industrial services. Energy activities, especially LNG, became strategically significant because they connected trading, import infrastructure, power generation and industrial consumption. A major structural change occurred in 2022, when POSCO Holdings was launched following a vertical spin-off. The holding company was assigned responsibility for portfolio development, group growth strategy, new-business promotion, restructuring and possible mergers and acquisitions. Operating businesses remained responsible for their respective markets, while the holding structure was intended to improve capital allocation and support long-term growth themes. The post-spin-off strategy placed greater emphasis on the energy transition. POSCO Group identified secondary-battery materials, lithium and nickel, hydrogen and energy alongside steel as important growth areas. Battery-material development was framed as a full value chain, extending from resource acquisition and refining through cathode and anode materials and recycling. This approach reflects the group’s attempt to use its industrial, chemical, processing and international-investment capabilities in markets related to electric vehicles and energy storage. The portfolio was further streamlined in January 2023 when POSCO Energy was merged into POSCO International. The transaction brought energy operations, LNG capabilities and trading activities together in one affiliate and was presented as a way to create operational and commercial synergies. At the same time, POSCO continued investing in steel modernization, including electrical-steel capacity for more energy-efficient vehicles and electric-arc-furnace projects. Decarbonization has become a central long-term issue. Primary steelmaking is energy-intensive and carbon-intensive, so POSCO has pursued hydrogen-reduction ironmaking, electric-arc-furnace technology, renewable energy and lower-carbon production routes. The group’s broader resource strategy also seeks to secure lithium, nickel, rare earths and other inputs relevant to national and industrial supply chains. These initiatives coexist with the continuing importance of traditional steel products and global customer relationships. Today, POSCO Group is best understood as a diversified materials and industrial group rather than only a steel brand. POSCO remains the core steel operating company, while POSCO Holdings coordinates the portfolio and affiliated companies extend into trading, energy, construction, digital services, mobility materials and battery materials. The group’s public identity combines the reliability and scale of Korean integrated steelmaking with an ambition to become a supplier of strategic resources and lower-carbon materials for future industries.
