History
Ovako’s industrial background is rooted in historic ironworks in Sweden, including Hofors, Boxholm and Hällefors, whose origins extend to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. These works gradually developed into larger industrial centers and later became part of the corporate combinations that formed modern Ovako. Steel for bearing applications was already being produced in Sweden during the early twentieth century. SKF acquired Hofors Bruk in 1916 and Hellefors Bruk in 1958. Imatra in Finland, another important part of the later Ovako footprint, began steel production in 1935. During the 1960s and 1970s, improvements in steelmaking technology enabled producers to achieve greater quality and consistency while increasing output. The predecessor companies increasingly concentrated on special steels for automotive and engineering customers. In 1969, the Finnish companies Oy Vuoksenniska Ab and Oy Fiskars Ab formed a joint company named Ovako. Wärtsilä became a shareholder in 1972. At the same time, plants in Smedjebacken, Hofors and Imatra expanded their relationships with automotive and general engineering industries. Corporate consolidation accelerated in the 1980s and 1990s. Smedjebackens Walsverk and Boxholms AB merged in 1981 to create Smedjebacken-Boxholm Stål AB. That business was acquired by Welbond in 1988 and later operated under the Fundia name. Separately, Ovako Steel was formed in 1986 through the combination of SKF Steel and Ovako. SKF became the sole owner of Ovako Steel in 1991, while the Imatra operations continued under the Imatra Steel name. In the same period, Fundia was acquired by Rautaruukki and Norsk Jern Holding. The present company was assembled in 2005 through the merger of Fundia, Ovako Steel and Imatra Steel. Ownership was initially shared by Rautaruukki, SKF and Wärtsilä. In 2006 the business was sold to Pampus Industrie Beteiligungen together with Dutch investors Hombergh Holdings and WP de Pundert Ventures. Pampus became sole owner in 2007. Triton acquired Ovako in 2010, excluding the wire-rod division that was not included in the transaction. In 2018, Nippon Steel Corporation acquired Ovako, bringing the specialist producer into the Japanese steel group. Under this ownership, Ovako continued to focus on long, low-alloy and high-performance steels, serving bearing, transport, manufacturing, mining, construction and energy customers. The operating structure has been organized around the Hofors-Hällefors, Smedjebacken-Boxholm and Imatra business areas, with production and sales activities extending across Europe and into North America and Asia. In the 2020s, Ovako emphasized the environmental advantages of scrap-based production and the reduction of fossil fuel use in reheating. A hydrogen-heating demonstration took place in 2020. The company later stated that, from January 2022, it offset remaining Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and therefore described its operations as carbon neutral. On 5 September 2023, a hydrogen plant at Hofors was inaugurated. The plant was presented as the world’s first facility producing fossil-free hydrogen specifically for heating steel before rolling, potentially reducing emissions from that process to nearly zero while producing water as the direct combustion by-product.
