Last updated August 21, 2026
Overview
Omnicom Group Inc. is an American multinational communications holding company headquartered in New York City. It operates through a large portfolio of agency networks and specialist businesses spanning advertising, media planning and buying, customer relationship management, digital and interactive marketing, public relations, healthcare communications, commerce, sports and events marketing, field marketing, branding, research, and other professional services. Rather than presenting one consumer-facing product line, Omnicom organizes its business around branded agency networks that retain distinct identities and client relationships. The company was created in 1986 through a three-way merger of BBDO Worldwide, Doyle Dane Bernbach, and Needham Harper Worldwide. The combination created a diversified advertising-services group at a time when global clients increasingly wanted agencies with international scale and broader communications capabilities. Allen Rosenshine, Keith Reinhard, and John Bernbach were central figures in the formation. The group subsequently expanded both organically and through acquisitions, adding major networks and specialist firms in media, public relations, healthcare, customer marketing, digital commerce, and brand consultancy. Omnicom's principal operating platforms include BBDO Worldwide, DDB Worldwide, TBWA Worldwide, Omnicom Media Group, and the DAS Group of Companies. Omnicom Media Group includes OMD, PHD, and Hearts & Science. The wider portfolio has also included or managed businesses such as Flywheel, Omnicom Health Group, Omnicom Precision Marketing Group, and the Communications Consultancy Network. Across these platforms, the group connects creative development with media investment, data, technology, customer experience, commerce, public affairs, and corporate reputation services. The group's agency brands serve multinational corporations, major national advertisers, governments, institutions, and other organizations. Its structure allows agencies to compete for business under their own names while accessing the scale, technology, talent, and international reach of a listed parent company. The portfolio includes creative agencies, media agencies, public-relations firms, healthcare specialists, CRM and precision-marketing companies, and e-commerce specialists. This breadth has made Omnicom one of the world's largest advertising and marketing-services holding companies. Important strategic developments include the failed proposed merger with Publicis Groupe in 2014, the formation and expansion of specialist healthcare and precision-marketing groups, the growth of digital and data-led capabilities, and the 2023 acquisition of Flywheel Digital. In December 2024, Omnicom and Interpublic Group announced advanced merger discussions. The transaction received U.S. Federal Trade Commission approval in June 2025 subject to a consent decree, and the merger was reported as completed on November 26, 2025. Under the announced structure, the combined company retained the Omnicom name and the OMC ticker, with John Wren designated chairman and chief executive officer and Phil Angelastro designated chief financial officer and executive vice president. Omnicom's international network operates across more than one hundred countries through thousands of agencies and specialist companies. Reference material for 2024 describes approximately 74,900 employees globally. The group's competitive positioning rests on global scale, a portfolio of highly recognized agency brands, multidisciplinary services, media and marketing technology, and the ability to coordinate communications programs across markets while preserving agency-level specialization.
History
Omnicom Group was established in 1986 through the merger of three prominent U.S. advertising networks: BBDO Worldwide, Doyle Dane Bernbach, and Needham Harper Worldwide. The transaction was designed to create a larger international platform at a time when multinational advertisers were increasingly seeking coordinated services across countries and media channels. Allen Rosenshine, Keith Reinhard, and John Bernbach were identified with the creation of the new holding company. The merger also established the portfolio-based model that became central to Omnicom's development: agency brands continued to operate with distinct creative cultures and market identities while sharing the resources of a common corporate parent. Rosenshine left the Omnicom chairmanship in 1989 to return to leading BBDO. Bruce Crawford, who had previously led BBDO before becoming associated with the Metropolitan Opera, then became Omnicom's chairman. In 1997, John Wren, previously the company's number-two executive, became chief executive while Crawford continued as chairman. Wren's long tenure coincided with the expansion of Omnicom from a traditional advertising holding company into a broader marketing and communications-services group. The group expanded its portfolio through new agency platforms, acquisitions, and specialist practices. BBDO remained a major creative network, while DDB provided another global advertising platform. Omnicom acquired TBWA in 1993 and later combined it with Chiat/Day in 1995, creating the TBWA\Chiat\Day structure in parts of the United States. The company also developed Omnicom Media Group, whose networks include OMD, PHD, and Hearts & Science. Other activities grew through the DAS Group of Companies, which brought together businesses in public relations, customer marketing, healthcare, events, research, branding, and related fields. During the 2010s, Omnicom placed increasing emphasis on digital, data, customer experience, healthcare, and precision marketing. It launched Omniwomen in 2014 as an initiative intended to support women's leadership and influence across the organization. The group also created dedicated platforms for healthcare and precision marketing, acquired or invested in specialist companies, and broadened the capabilities offered through its agency networks. DDB launched DDB Health in 2016, while Omnicom Health Group and Omnicom Precision Marketing Group became important organizational vehicles for specialist expansion. The company continued to add businesses in patient engagement, medical communications, data-driven marketing, and customer relationship management. Omnicom remained one of the largest global advertising holding companies during this period. A proposed merger with Publicis Groupe was announced in 2013, but the parties ended the transaction in 2014 before completion. The failed deal illustrated the scale and consolidation pressures affecting the global agency industry, while Omnicom continued to pursue growth through its own operating networks and targeted acquisitions. In 2023, Omnicom acquired Flywheel Digital from Ascential, adding a substantial e-commerce and digital-commerce capability to its portfolio. In December 2024, Omnicom and Interpublic Group announced advanced discussions concerning a much larger combination. The proposed transaction was reviewed by regulators, and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission approved it in June 2025 subject to a consent decree addressing the use of third-party media-evaluation services. The transaction was reported as completed on November 26, 2025. The resulting organization retained the Omnicom name and OMC ticker, with John Wren designated chairman and chief executive and Phil Angelastro designated chief financial officer and executive vice president. By 2024 reference material described Omnicom as employing approximately 74,900 people globally. Its business is organized around five major network groupings: BBDO Worldwide, Diversified Agency Services, DDB Worldwide, Omnicom Media Group, and TBWA Worldwide. Through these networks and their associated agencies, Omnicom provides creative, media, public-relations, CRM, commerce, healthcare, technology, and specialist communications services in markets around the world.
