Overview
NTT is a Japanese telecommunications holding group headquartered in Tokyo. Its modern corporate history began in 1952, when Japan’s national telegraph and telephone operations were reorganized as the government-owned Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation. The organization was privatized in 1985 as Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, while the Japanese government retained a continuing ownership and regulatory relationship under the NTT Law. NTT was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1987 and became one of the world’s most valuable companies during the late-1980s Japanese asset-price boom. The group is best known for operating and managing essential communications infrastructure in Japan. Its structure includes NTT East and NTT West, which provide regional fixed-line, broadband, fiber, and related services; NTT DOCOMO, the group’s mobile communications business; NTT Communications, which serves domestic and international network and information-technology customers; and NTT DATA, a systems-integration and digital-services company. Other activities include data centers, cloud computing, cybersecurity, managed services, real estate, finance, communications equipment, and advanced research. A major structural turning point came in 1999, when the former operating organization was reorganized into a holding-company model. NTT East and NTT West assumed regional communications operations, while NTT Communications handled long-distance and international services. The arrangement reflected Japanese regulatory efforts to preserve nationwide fixed-line service while introducing more competition. NTT East and NTT West remain subject to special legal obligations, including service responsibilities in remote areas and regulated access arrangements for certain network facilities. NTT has also expanded internationally through enterprise technology and network businesses. In 2010 it agreed to acquire Dimension Data, strengthening its global information-technology services presence. In 2019, NTT consolidated several international businesses, including operations associated with NTT Communications, Dimension Data, and NTT Security, into NTT Ltd. The group therefore operates through a portfolio of specialized companies rather than a single consumer-facing product line. Research and innovation remain central to NTT’s identity. Its laboratories work across optical communications, network technology, software, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, communications science, quantum-related fields, energy systems, and other foundational technologies. NTT has also been a substantial patent applicant and has promoted optical-network and next-generation connectivity concepts over several decades. The company changed its official corporate name from Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation to NTT, Inc. on 1 July 2025 following amendments to the governing law. The change was accompanied by a corporate identity refresh marking the company’s fortieth anniversary as a privatized enterprise. The NTT brand continues to represent a large, integrated communications and technology group rather than a single telecommunications service. Its strategic role combines regulated national infrastructure, competitive consumer and enterprise services, global IT delivery, and long-term research.
History
NTT’s roots lie in Japan’s national telegraph and telephone service, established in the nineteenth century and later administered through the government’s communications and postal system. In August 1952, the telecommunications operations were separated from the state administration and placed in the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation, commonly known as Den-Den Kōsha. The public corporation operated as a national telecommunications monopoly and developed Japan’s fixed-line network during the country’s postwar industrial expansion. Japan liberalized its telecommunications market in the 1980s. In 1985, the public corporation was privatized and incorporated as Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation. The change was part of a broader Japanese privatization program and was intended to encourage competition. NTT’s initial public offering in 1987 was exceptionally large by contemporary standards, and the company became a major component of Japan’s equity market. Its valuation reached extraordinary levels during the late-1980s asset boom, although its market position and valuation later declined as the Japanese bubble collapsed and competition increased. The company expanded beyond traditional voice telephony into digital networks, mobile communications, data processing, and research. NTT DATA began operations in 1988, and NTT Mobile Communications Network, later known as NTT DOCOMO, began operations in 1992. NTT announced successive strategic concepts focused on integrated services, multimedia, optical networks, and the future of digital communications. Japan’s communications network completed its transition to digital operation in 1997. A major reorganization took effect in 1999. NTT became a holding company, while NTT East, NTT West, and NTT Communications were established as wholly owned operating companies. The regional companies assumed responsibility for local and fixed-line services in eastern and western Japan. NTT Communications handled long-distance and international communications. The structure was designed to separate businesses while retaining coordinated control over key infrastructure. NTT East and NTT West continued to carry legal duties to maintain fixed-line services nationwide, including in rural areas, and to provide regulated access to certain unused fiber capacity. During the 2000s and 2010s, NTT developed a broader technology portfolio. It expanded mobile services through DOCOMO, enterprise computing through NTT DATA, international network services through NTT Communications, and global IT and managed-services capabilities through acquisitions and overseas operations. In 2010, NTT agreed to acquire Dimension Data, a major international IT-services provider. In 2019, international businesses connected with NTT Communications, Dimension Data, and NTT Security were consolidated into NTT Ltd., creating a more unified platform for multinational customers. NTT has maintained a substantial research organization throughout its history. Its laboratories have worked on digital codecs, fiber-optic and photonic communications, network architecture, software, security, energy systems, artificial intelligence, and communications science. Research activity supports both the group’s operating companies and the broader development of communications technology. In 2023, NTT ranked among the leading global applicants for patents published through the World Intellectual Property Organization’s international patent system. The group also operates in adjacent areas, including finance and real estate, and has participated in sports sponsorship through businesses such as NTT DOCOMO and NTT DATA. In 2021, it issued green bonds intended to finance environmentally oriented projects. On 1 July 2025, the statutory corporate name changed to NTT, Inc., accompanied by a refreshed corporate identity. The NTT group remains a central Japanese communications institution, combining regulated network responsibilities with competitive consumer, enterprise, international, and technology businesses.
