Nikola
American truck manufacturer
Last updated August 31, 2026
Overview
Nikola Corporation was an American commercial-vehicle company established in 2014 by Trevor Milton. It pursued zero-emission heavy-duty transportation through battery-electric trucks, hydrogen fuel-cell trucks, hydrogen production and refueling infrastructure, and related energy systems. The business was originally known as Nikola Motor Company and was named in honor of inventor Nikola Tesla, although it was a separate company from Tesla, Inc. Nikola began with ambitious concepts for long-haul tractor-trailers and a proposed ecosystem in which the company would supply vehicles, hydrogen and supporting infrastructure. Its early portfolio included the Nikola One fuel-cell truck concept, the Nikola Two, the Nikola Tre, the Badger pickup concept, the NZT off-road vehicle and the WAV watercraft concept. Most of these projects did not reach commercial production. The Tre became Nikola’s principal production program, first as a battery-electric Class 8 tractor and later as a hydrogen fuel-cell model. The company went public on Nasdaq in June 2020 through a merger with special-purpose acquisition company VectoIQ Acquisition Corporation, using the ticker NKLA. The transaction briefly gave Nikola a multibillion-dollar valuation and drew substantial investor and industry attention. A proposed strategic relationship with General Motors was announced in September 2020, but the arrangement was later reduced and the proposed Badger program was cancelled. Nikola’s growth narrative was severely damaged by allegations that promotional claims had overstated the maturity of its technology and operations. A September 2020 report by short seller Hindenburg Research alleged extensive deception, including the presentation of a Nikola One truck rolling downhill without its own propulsion. The allegations were followed by investigations by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice. Milton resigned as executive chairman in September 2020, was indicted in 2021, convicted on three fraud counts in 2022 and sentenced in 2023. The company itself was not indicted in the federal case described in the reference material. Nikola subsequently concentrated on the Tre and attempted to develop a hydrogen-trucking network under the HYLA name. Its battery-electric trucks experienced safety problems, including a 2023 battery-related fire sequence that led to a recall of all 209 battery-electric semitrucks produced at that point and a temporary sales suspension. Nikola reported selling 112 hydrogen fuel-cell trucks during the first half of 2024, but continued to face severe financial and operational pressure. On February 19, 2025, it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and stated that it intended to sell most or all of its assets. Later asset transactions reportedly involved Lucid Motors acquiring selected facilities and assets, while Hyroad Energy acquired a group of hydrogen fuel-cell trucks and associated assets, subject to the relevant bankruptcy process. The final status of Nikola as a continuing operating brand requires verification because the bankruptcy and asset-sale process may have separated facilities, vehicles, intellectual property and other assets from the original business.
History
Nikola was founded in 2014 by Trevor Milton in Salt Lake City, Utah. Its original proposition extended beyond building trucks: the company sought to combine zero-emission heavy vehicles with an associated hydrogen-energy network. Early plans called for hydrogen fuel-cell tractor units and proprietary or partner-developed refueling stations. In 2016, Nikola promoted the Nikola One, initially described with a natural-gas power concept before being redesigned around a hydrogen fuel-cell electric architecture. The company discussed large prospective orders and planned contract manufacturing, but the Nikola One remained a concept and did not enter delivery service. Nikola also introduced the Nikola Two and several non-truck concepts, including the NZT utility vehicle, WAV watercraft and Badger pickup. These projects helped build the company’s public profile but broadened its commitments before a mature commercial product had been established. In 2019, Nikola acquired a large parcel in Coolidge, Arizona, for a planned manufacturing facility and outlined aggressive production targets. That year it held Nikola World in Scottsdale, where it demonstrated several vehicle concepts. Mark Russell joined as president in February 2019 and later became chief executive. Nikola’s plans attracted strategic and financial interest, including a proposed relationship with Anheuser-Busch for hydrogen truck leases and a prospective hydrogen-refueling partnership with BP. A patent dispute with Tesla over truck design also began in 2018; the companies later agreed to drop their litigation. Nikola’s most important corporate transition occurred in 2020, when it merged with VectoIQ Acquisition Corporation and began trading on Nasdaq under NKLA. The listing generated intense investor enthusiasm, and the share price more than doubled soon after trading began. The company briefly achieved a valuation above that of Ford despite limited operating revenue and no established volume-delivery record. Nikola announced a proposed partnership with General Motors in September 2020. The original proposal included an equity stake for GM, GM manufacturing support for the Badger and GM-supplied fuel-cell and battery technology. The arrangement was subsequently revised, eliminating the equity investment and Badger production. The Badger program was cancelled, while other planned partnerships also fell away. The company’s reputation deteriorated rapidly in September 2020 after Hindenburg Research published a report alleging that Nikola had misrepresented its technology and business prospects. One central allegation concerned a Nikola One promotional demonstration in which the truck rolled down a slope without onboard propulsion. Nikola rejected the report’s characterization and threatened legal action, but the allegations attracted the attention of federal authorities. The SEC and Department of Justice investigated potential securities fraud. Milton resigned in September 2020. In 2021, a federal grand jury indicted him on multiple fraud and securities-fraud counts. He was found guilty on three counts in 2022 and sentenced to four years in prison in December 2023. The reference material states that the company itself was not indicted in that case. After the 2020 crisis, Nikola narrowed its portfolio and focused on the Tre Class 8 truck. It dropped its powersports initiatives and reduced its near-term production expectations. The company pursued both battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell versions and continued work on hydrogen supply and refueling through its HYLA initiative. Nikola acquired battery-maker Romeo Power in 2022, seeking greater control over battery technology and supply. It also began delivering a limited number of vehicles to dealers, although commercial scale remained far below its early projections. The battery-electric program faced serious reliability and safety setbacks. In 2022, 93 Tre battery-electric trucks were recalled over seat-belt anchor assemblies. In 2023, a battery-related fire at Nikola’s headquarters was followed by further incidents. Nikola recalled all 209 battery-electric semitrucks it had produced by that point and paused sales while investigating and developing a repair. The incidents increased pressure on a company already constrained by capital needs, limited production, infrastructure requirements and declining market confidence. Nikola continued promoting hydrogen fuel-cell trucking for routes where long range, rapid refueling and high vehicle utilization could favor hydrogen over batteries. It reported selling 112 hydrogen fuel-cell trucks in the first half of 2024 and planned additional refueling solutions. Nevertheless, the company entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on February 19, 2025. It stated that it intended to sell most or all of its assets. Subsequent reported transactions separated portions of the former enterprise: Lucid Motors pursued selected Arizona facilities and assets, while Hyroad Energy acquired 113 hydrogen fuel-cell trucks and related parts, software and intellectual property through the bankruptcy auction process. These developments leave the continuing corporate and brand status of Nikola uncertain and require confirmation from bankruptcy-court records or later company filings.
