Overview
Naver Corporation is a South Korean internet conglomerate headquartered in Seongnam, in the greater Seoul metropolitan area. Its principal consumer brand, Naver, began as a domestic search portal in 1999 and developed into one of South Korea’s most influential digital platforms. Rather than operating only as a search engine, Naver combines search, news, maps, email, blogs, online communities, knowledge-sharing, shopping, payments, media distribution and entertainment in a tightly integrated ecosystem tailored to Korean language, culture and consumer behavior. The company was founded by Lee Hae-jin in June 1999 under the name Naver Comm. One of its early differentiators was its ability to organize results from multiple content formats, including webpages, news, images, blogs and online communities, on one search-results page. Naver also launched Junior Naver, a children’s portal, and later introduced Knowledge iN, a user-generated question-and-answer service that helped establish the company as an early large-scale adopter of participatory content. Naver Cafe and Naver Blog extended this model by allowing users to form topic-based communities and publish personal or specialist material. The company’s corporate history is closely connected with Hangame, a Korean online-game business. After merging with Hangame and related companies in 2000, Naver changed its corporate name to NHN in 2001. For more than a decade, search and games operated within the same corporate structure. In 2013, NHN separated its portal and game businesses. The internet and search business resumed the Naver Corporation name, while the former Hangame operations became associated with NHN Entertainment. Since the 2013 separation, Naver has broadened its business portfolio substantially. Its commerce activities include search-linked shopping, seller tools, live commerce and Naver Pay. Its content businesses include Naver Webtoon, web novels, Studio N and international storytelling assets such as Wattpad. Naver has also participated in the global messaging and entertainment ecosystem through LINE-related holdings and investments, although the corporate structures around LINE and Yahoo Japan have changed over time. The company acquired Poshmark in 2023, adding a North American social-commerce and fashion resale platform to its broader commerce strategy. Technology and infrastructure are central to Naver’s positioning. NAVER Cloud operates cloud infrastructure, enterprise software, data centers and artificial-intelligence services, including the HyperCLOVA and HyperCLOVA X large-language-model platforms. Naver Labs conducts research in artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomous systems, mapping and spatial computing. The company’s GAK data centers and its robot-oriented 1784 headquarters reflect a strategy of owning or developing infrastructure that can support high-volume consumer services and advanced technology research. Naver’s product portfolio also includes Papago machine translation, Whale web browser, the CLOVA artificial-intelligence platform, Naver Maps, Naver TV, NOW., VIBE, Naver Dictionary, Naver Encyclopedia, BAND and SNOW-related services. Some historically important products have been discontinued, transferred or reorganized. V Live, for example, was transferred to Weverse Company and shut down after integration with Weverse in December 2022. Junior Naver’s service was sunset on May 27, 2025. As of 2024, the company reported approximately KRW 10.7 trillion in total revenue and 4,535 employees excluding affiliates, according to its corporate overview. Under CEO Choi Soo-yeon and founder and board chair Lee Hae-jin, Naver presents itself as a technology company seeking to connect users, creators, merchants and businesses through AI-enhanced search, commerce, content and cloud infrastructure. Its strategic identity is therefore broader than that of a conventional portal: it is a Korea-centered digital ecosystem with global ambitions in story…
History
Naver’s history began in June 1999, when Lee Hae-jin established Naver Comm and launched the Naver search portal in South Korea. The company also introduced Junior Naver, a children’s portal, and later that year launched the Hangame game portal. In 2000, Naver acquired or merged with Hangame Communications, One-Cue and Search Solutions. The combination gave the young company both a search business and a substantial online-games operation. A key early innovation was Naver’s integrated-search model, introduced in August 2000. Instead of treating the web as a single list of pages, the service organized results by content type, including news, images, blogs, cafes and other specialized categories. This approach helped Naver adapt search to the Korean-language web and encouraged users to create content inside Naver’s own services. In 2001, the company changed its corporate name to NHN, short for Next Human Network, while continuing to operate the Naver and Hangame brands. NHN expanded its service portfolio during the early 2000s. It listed on KOSDAQ in 2002 and introduced Knowledge iN, a question-and-answer platform built around user participation and community reputation. It consolidated Japanese operations into NHN Japan in 2003, launched the webtoon service in 2004, and established Happy Bean, an online donation portal, in 2005. The company also created NHN USA and pursued international gaming and search initiatives. Naver’s increasing market capitalization led to its transfer from KOSDAQ to the KOSPI market in November 2008. The company expanded its infrastructure and mobile capabilities in the late 2000s and early 2010s. It moved into the Green Factory headquarters in Seongnam in 2010. In 2011, NHN Japan launched LINE, which became a major messaging platform in Japan and several Southeast Asian markets. Naver also developed mobile and social products such as BAND and later created affiliates focused on mobile applications, visual communication and international services. The most important corporate restructuring occurred in 2013. NHN separated its portal and game operations after 13 years of combined development. The portal and technology business resumed the Naver Corporation name on October 1, 2013, while the game business became associated with NHN Entertainment. In the same period, Naver established LINE Plus and Camp Mobile and completed Data Center GAK in Chuncheon, strengthening its control over infrastructure and overseas mobile operations. From 2014 through 2018, Naver developed a more diversified technology and content group. It expanded Naver Pay, launched Works Mobile for business collaboration, acquired the education platform Entry Korea, separated SNOW into its own company, established Naver Labs and Naver Webtoon as specialized affiliates, and acquired Xerox Research Centre Europe, which became NAVER LABS Europe. Naver also established Space Green at Station F in Paris to support startups and launched Naver Z and the Zepeto metaverse platform. The company’s international strategy accelerated during the 2020s. Naver Financial was established in 2019, while artificial-intelligence initiatives such as HyperCLOVA reinforced the company’s ambition to build proprietary language and recommendation technologies. In 2021, Naver completed the acquisition of Wattpad and participated in the integration of LINE and Yahoo Japan through the A Holdings and Z Holdings structures. It also partnered with CJ ENM on the acquisition of Munpia, a Korean web-novel platform, and pursued closer links with global entertainment platforms. Naver’s content strategy expanded through the combination of webtoons, web novels and screen adaptations. In 2021, Naver announced a merger of Webtoon Studio and Wattpad Studio into Wattpad Webtoon Studios, seeking to turn creator-generated stories into films, series, animations and other forms of intellectual property. In 2022, the company moved into its second headquarters, 1784, designed around robots, cloud systems, artificial intelligence and autonomous technologies. The same period saw the transfer and eventual closure of V Live after its integration with Weverse. In 2023, Naver completed the acquisition of Poshmark, extending its commerce portfolio into North American fashion resale and community-driven social shopping. It also participated in the launch of LY Corporation in Japan and opened the GAK Sejong data center. In 2024, NAVER Webtoon listed on Nasdaq, providing a public-market platform for one of Naver’s most important global growth businesses. By 2026, Naver continued to emphasize artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure, search transformation and global technology partnerships while retaining search, commerce, content and fintech as the core pillars of its ecosystem.
