Meidericher Schiffswerft

Meidericher Schiffswerft (MSW) is a shipyard located in Duisburg, Germany, the largest inland port in Europe. Founded in 1898, it has been a partner to inland navigation for over 125 years, offering repair, conversion, and newbuilding of inland vessels, Rhine-sea ships, and special watercraft. The company emphasizes quality, flexibility, and comprehensive service, and is an IHK training company.

The Meidericher Schiffswerft was founded on September 13, 1898, by Duisburg banker Alwin Hilger as 'Meidericher Schiffswerft vorm. Thomas & Co. Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung'. The founding consisted of the acquisition and continuation of the shipyard operated under the name Thomas & Co. in Meiderich, Kreis Ruhrort, and the establishment and operation of new facilities. After the completion of new harbor basins in 1904 and 1905, the shipyard moved from Kaiserhafen to Hafenbecken A in 1908. Jakob Graff was appointed as sole managing director and later became a partner. Under his leadership, the shipyard gained a reputation in the Rhine area from Switzerland to Holland for its pioneering work in inland shipbuilding. In the second generation, Dipl.-Ing. Alwin Hilger jun. (until 1974), Obering. Paul Drewes (until 1968), and Dipl.-Ing. Berthold Wewer (until 1985) led the shipyard successfully for decades.
