Overview
Mega Channel, also known as MEGA TV or simply MEGA, is a Greek television network and one of the most recognizable names in the country's commercial broadcasting history. It began transmitting on 20 November 1989 as the trade name of Teletypos S.A., becoming Greece's first private television station. Its launch marked a major change in the Greek media environment, which had previously been dominated by state broadcasting. From its earliest years, Mega built its identity around a broad schedule combining Greek news and current affairs, locally produced comedy and drama, entertainment formats, foreign television series, films, and sports coverage. During the 1990s and 2000s, the network regularly competed for, and often achieved, the highest audience ratings in Greece. Its programming strategy relied heavily on original Greek production, helping establish television careers, production practices, and programme formats that became influential in the domestic market. Popular comedies and dramas included Sto Para Pente, Savatogenimmenes, and Maria, i Aschimi. Mega also produced To Nisi, a 26-episode adaptation associated with Victoria Hislop's novel The Island. Its reported budget of approximately €4 million made it one of the most expensive Greek television productions of its time. The channel's extensive catalogue became a significant strategic asset and continued to attract viewers through reruns and later digital distribution. The original company entered a prolonged financial crisis during the 2010s. The difficulties were associated with borrowing and restructuring problems at the parent-company level. By 2016, publicly reported debt was approximately €116 million, while reports also described delays or failures in paying staff. A proposed €15 million share-capital increase was not completed, even as lenders considered extending repayment arrangements. Employees kept the station operating for an extended period despite the labour and financing problems. As resources deteriorated, Mega stopped producing regular news and live programming and relied increasingly on repeats from its programme archive, including a period in which rebroadcast material was shown without commercial breaks. The first incarnation of the channel was removed from Greece's digital terrestrial platform by Digea at 02:08:36 on 28 October 2018 and disappeared from pay-television platforms on 20 November 2018. It continued for a period through online streaming. The brand, logo, and programme library were auctioned on 1 November 2019, with the successful bid of €33,999,999 coming from Alter Ego Media S.A. Following the acquisition, the network was rebuilt and relaunched on 17 February 2020 with live programmes, news, films, and selected archive content. The relaunched Mega combines the heritage of the original network with a contemporary schedule. Its output includes daily news, political and social-affairs programmes, entertainment, Greek scripted series, imported drama and factual programming, and selected football and other sports rights. It also operates a digital presence through live streaming, catch-up content, clips, and social media distribution. The international service MEGA Cosmos extends selected programming to Greek-speaking audiences abroad. As an active Greek broadcaster under Alter Ego Media, Mega remains positioned as a mass-market national television brand whose principal differentiators are its established news operation, recognizable on-screen identity, archive value, and long history of domestic production.
History
Mega Channel was created as the television brand of Teletypos S.A. and began broadcasting on 20 November 1989. It was the first private television station to launch in Greece, making it an important institution in the liberalization and commercialization of Greek television. Its early schedule mixed news, public-affairs discussion, entertainment, foreign acquisitions, and original Greek productions. Rather than serving a narrow genre audience, Mega pursued national reach and developed a general-interest identity. The network's strongest period came during the 1990s and 2000s, when it frequently occupied the top position in Greek television ratings. Its competitive advantage was closely linked to investment in Greek-language production. Comedy, drama, news, and entertainment programmes created a recognizable catalogue that could be reused through reruns and later digital services. Series such as Sto Para Pente, Savatogenimmenes, and Maria, i Aschimi became prominent examples of Mega's domestic programming. The channel also commissioned To Nisi, a major adaptation connected with Victoria Hislop's novel The Island. The 26-episode production was reported to have cost about €4 million, making it an unusually ambitious investment for Greek television. Mega's corporate structure became increasingly strained during the 2010s. The parent company faced serious financial problems linked to borrowing and debt management. In 2016, reported liabilities were approximately €116 million, and employees were reportedly left without regular pay. A planned €15 million capital increase did not proceed, while lenders considered extending repayment arrangements. The channel remained on air largely through the efforts of its workforce, but its output was progressively reduced. News and live programming were suspended, and the schedule shifted toward archive programming, at times without commercial breaks. The crisis coincided with changes in Greece's television-licensing environment. Mega did not obtain a nationwide licence in the 2018 tender process. Digea removed the station from digital terrestrial distribution on 28 October 2018, and pay-television operators removed it on 20 November. Although the original broadcast operation ended, the website continued to provide online streaming for a period, preserving public access to parts of the brand and library. On 1 November 2019, the Mega brand assets, including the name, logo, and programme archive, were auctioned. Alter Ego Media S.A. won with a bid of €33,999,999. The acquisition allowed Mega to return as a rebuilt network rather than merely as an archive service. Relaunch preparations culminated in a new broadcast start on 17 February 2020. The revived channel combined live news, current affairs, entertainment, films, selected historic programmes, and new scripted content. The post-2020 service retained visual elements associated with Mega's earlier identity while introducing new seasonal presentation. The 'Mega Mou' branding was used during the relaunch period, alongside the slogan 'Mega όπως πάντα!' ('Mega as always!'). In June 2021, the network replaced that package with an identity built around animated objects forming the logo. The core Mega logo, whose best-known typographic form dates from 1999, remained central to the brand. Today, Mega operates as part of Alter Ego Media and serves the Greek television market through terrestrial and digital distribution. Its schedule includes news bulletins, current-affairs programmes, entertainment, Greek drama and comedy, imported series, factual content, films, and sports rights including selected UEFA competitions. The network also maintains online streaming, catch-up services, social-media distribution, and the international MEGA Cosmos service for Greek audiences abroad. Its historical library remains one of the brand's most valuable assets, supporting both nostalgia-driven viewing and continuing programme exploitation.
