Meade Instruments was an American optical-instrument company and brand specializing in telescopes, telescope accessories, binoculars, spotting scopes, microscopes, CCD cameras, and related consumer products. Founded in 1972 by John Diebel, the business initially operated as a mail-order seller of small refracting telescopes and accessories made by Japan’s Towa Optical Manufacturing Company. The combined business continued to market Meade and Orion products for a period, but Sky & Telescope reported in 2024 that the California facilities had closed and employees had been laid off. Later reporting stated that the assets of Meade, Coronado, and Orion were to be auctioned and that operations were ceasing. History
Meade Instruments began in 1972 when John Diebel established a mail-order business selling small refracting telescopes and accessories. The early products were manufactured by Towa Optical Manufacturing Company in Japan. By 1976, Meade had started producing its own instruments, and in 1977 it introduced six- and eight-inch reflecting telescopes. This shift from importing to manufacturing established the company as a significant participant in the expanding amateur-astronomy market. In 1980, Meade entered the Schmidt–Cassegrain segment, which had previously been strongly associated with Celestron.
