Overview
Malt Shovel Brewery is an Australian brewery based in Camperdown, an inner-city suburb of Sydney, New South Wales. It operates within Lion, the Australian beverage company owned by Japan’s Kirin Holdings, and is best known as the brewing home of James Squire beers. The James Squire name refers to an English convict who became one of the earliest commercial brewers in colonial Australia, cultivated hops, and operated a brewery and tavern known as the Malting Shovel. Malt Shovel adopted that historical association when it was established as Lion’s Australian craft-brewing arm in the late 1990s. The brewery’s immediate predecessor was the Hahn Brewery, founded by master brewer Chuck Hahn in 1988 in a former horse stable and later furniture factory at Camperdown. The operation was initially developed as a microbrewery and became one of Australia’s largest businesses of that type. Lion provided financial support in 1993, and the business was relaunched in late 1998 under the Malt Shovel name. This transition connected Hahn’s independent brewing background with Lion’s distribution and commercial infrastructure while preserving a focus on small-batch and specialty beer. Malt Shovel’s principal portfolio has been the James Squire range, which includes pale ales, amber ales, pilseners, India pale ales, porters, golden ales and seasonal or limited releases. Many products use names linked to the James Squire story, including One Fifty Lashes Pale Ale, Nine Tales Original Amber Ale, Four Wives Pilsener, Stowaway IPA, Jack of Spades Porter and Chancer Golden Ale. The brewery has also made cider, including Orchard Crush, and has released experimental beers under the Malt Shovel Brewers name, formerly known as Mad Brewers. Kosciuszko Pale Ale, originally brewed at the Kosciuszko Brewery in Jindabyne, has also been produced and bottled at Malt Shovel. The business expanded its physical capacity in 2008 after acquiring an adjoining building for production and storage. Production increased from four million litres in 2003 to 4.74 million litres in 2010, according to the referenced historical material. Malt Shovel has also supported a network of James Squire-branded brewpubs and venues in cities including Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney. New brewhouses opened in Sydney and Hobart in 2017. The main Camperdown brewery is not generally open for routine public access, although it has welcomed visitors during Sydney Craft Beer Week. Malt Shovel beers have received recognition at the Australian International Beer Awards and the World Beer Cup. Notable results include Champion Australasian Brewery awards in 2000 and 2003, gold recognition for Four Wives Pilsener at the 2008 World Beer Cup, gold for New Norcia Abbey Ale in 2010, and gold for James Squire The Swindler in 2016. The brewery occupies a position between independent-style craft brewing and large-scale commercial distribution: its range emphasizes distinctive styles, historical storytelling and rotating specialty releases, while its ownership by Lion gives it access to a national corporate brewing and hospitality network.
History
Malt Shovel Brewery developed from the Hahn Brewery, which Chuck Hahn established in 1988 in Camperdown, Sydney. The site had previously been used as horse stables and later as a furniture factory. Hahn’s operation was designed as a microbrewery at a time when small-scale specialty brewing was comparatively unusual in Australia. By 1993, Lion had provided financial support to the business, linking the brewery with a major beverage company while it continued to pursue distinctive, small-batch beers. In late 1998, the business was relaunched as Malt Shovel Brewery and became Lion’s Australian craft-brewing arm. The name was chosen in connection with James Squire’s original brewery tavern, the Malting Shovel. Squire was an English convict who became associated with early Australian brewing, hop cultivation and commercial beer production. Malt Shovel used this historical narrative to identify its flagship James Squire range and distinguish it from mainstream lager brands. The brewery initially concentrated on pale ales, ales and porters, later broadening its portfolio to include pilsener, India pale ale, golden ale, cider, seasonal beers and experimental releases. Core James Squire products included Nine Tales Original Amber Ale, Four Wives Pilsener, Stowaway IPA, Jack of Spades Porter and Chancer Golden Ale. The brewery also issued rotating limited editions, sometimes every quarter, through James Squire venues and selected liquor retailers. A separate Malt Shovel Brewers label, previously called Mad Brewers, was used for more experimental beers such as black IPA, strong lager and American-style wheat ale. Production reached four million litres in 2003 and 4.74 million litres in 2010, reflecting the brewery’s growth within Lion’s distribution system. In 2008, Malt Shovel acquired an adjoining building to enlarge production and storage facilities. The brewery also became connected with a group of James Squire brewpubs and hospitality venues, including locations in Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth, North Adelaide and Brisbane. New brewhouses in Sydney and Hobart opened in 2017. The Camperdown production site has generally not operated as a regular public attraction, although it has hosted visitors during Sydney Craft Beer Week. Malt Shovel’s beers have earned awards in Australian and international competitions. The brewery was named Champion Australasian Brewery at the Australian International Beer Awards in 2000 and 2003. Individual beers also received recognition, including Four Wives Pilsener at the World Beer Cup in 2008, New Norcia Abbey Ale in 2010 and The Swindler in 2016. The business therefore represents a hybrid model: craft-oriented product development and brand storytelling combined with the scale, ownership and distribution resources of Lion and Kirin.
