Overview
LV 1871, formally Lebensversicherung von 1871 a.G. München, is a German insurance company headquartered in Munich. Its origins date to 1871, when Munich citizens established the Christkatholischer Begräbniß-Verein, an association that provided funeral insurance to members. The organization later developed from a funeral-benefit association into a mutual insurer and gradually expanded its business toward life insurance, retirement provision and income protection. The organization became a mutual insurance association in 1927 and began offering life insurance in 1929. This change marked the beginning of the business model that defines LV 1871 today. The institution retained a member-oriented mutual structure rather than becoming a publicly traded insurance corporation. Its name was changed in 1969 to Lebensversicherung von 1871 a.G. München, reflecting the increasing importance of life insurance in its portfolio. LV 1871 focuses primarily on life insurance, pension and retirement products, occupational and personal disability insurance, long-term-care-related protection and critical-illness coverage. Its product approach has historically emphasized flexibility in retirement income and the ability to combine conventional pension benefits with lump-sum options, supplementary retirement income or care protection. The company also serves self-employed customers with disability products designed to protect earning capacity. The group operates through its Munich parent and several subsidiaries. These include Delta Direkt Lebensversicherung AG, LV 1871 Pensionsfonds AG in Liechtenstein, LV 1871 Private Assurance AG in Liechtenstein, Magnus GmbH and TRIAS Versicherung AG. The group’s business is centered on the German insurance market, while its Liechtenstein entities support pension-fund and private-assurance activities. Important stages in LV 1871’s development include the resumption of operations after the Second World War, the expansion of its insurance portfolio during the postwar period, the introduction of broader protection products in the 1990s and the launch of the eXtra-Rente pension product in 1999. In 2013, the company received a Golden Bull award from Euro and Euro am Sonntag for its 4flex product, which offered customers several retirement and protection choices. LV 1871 remains an active, privately held mutual insurance group. Its public identity combines a Munich historical heritage with specialization in life insurance, retirement planning and protection against disability, serious illness and care needs. The company is managed as a group under a board structure that includes responsibility for products, underwriting, information technology, sales and marketing.
History
LV 1871 traces its history to 1871, when a group of Munich citizens founded the Christkatholischer Begräbniß-Verein, or Catholic Funeral Association. The organization was created to provide funeral insurance to members. Its earliest identity was therefore that of a member-based mutual aid institution rather than a broad life insurer. The association expanded steadily during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. By 1927, membership had reached approximately 140,000, and the organization was converted into a mutual insurance association. Two years later, in 1929, it began offering life insurance. This was a significant strategic development because it added long-term insurance and savings functions to the original funeral-insurance activity. By 1933, membership had reportedly grown to about 400,000. During the National Socialist period, the association was forced in 1938 to change its name to Münchener Begräbnisverein, or Munich Funeral Association. After the end of the Second World War, it resumed operations in July 1945 from premises at Sendlinger Strasse 55 in Munich. The postwar period brought substantial growth: by 1954, the organization held a portfolio of approximately 1.1 million insurance contracts. As life insurance became increasingly important, the company changed its name in 1969 to Lebensversicherung von 1871 a.G. München. The new designation connected the organization to its founding year while making its life-insurance orientation explicit. In 1977, it moved its headquarters to Regina-Haus at Maximiliansplatz 5, a building formerly known as the Regina Palace Hotel. In 1987, it adopted a new logo depicting a stylized Frauenkirche, linking the corporate identity to Munich and to the city in which the organization was founded. The company broadened its protection and retirement offering in the 1990s. In 1993, it introduced supplementary long-term care insurance as part of a wider pension concept, disability insurance for self-employed people with a premium-reimbursement guarantee, and critical-illness insurance providing an advance of capital in the event of serious illness. These products reflected a move beyond traditional death-benefit and savings policies toward protection against multiple personal financial risks. In 1999, LV 1871 launched eXtra-Rente, a pension-insurance product that subsequently received the Capital Innovation Prize for insurance. The company continued to develop flexible retirement concepts, including the 4flex product. In January 2013, Euro and Euro am Sonntag awarded 4flex a Golden Bull. The product enabled customers to choose between a conventional retirement arrangement and a lump-sum payment, while also offering supplementary retirement income or a long-term-care plan. Its design allowed pension benefits to be adjusted in circumstances such as serious illness or the need for care. The modern LV 1871 group comprises the Munich parent and several wholly owned subsidiaries, including Delta Direkt Lebensversicherung AG, LV 1871 Pensionsfonds AG, LV 1871 Private Assurance AG, Magnus GmbH and TRIAS Versicherung AG. The two LV 1871 entities in Liechtenstein were established in 2007 and 2008 respectively. The group remains privately held and mutually organized, with its main business centered on life, pension, disability and related protection insurance.
