Overview
Leaf Group was an American digital media and marketplace company that developed, acquired, and operated online brands in lifestyle publishing, health and fitness, practical advice, home design, travel, and art commerce. The company was founded in 2006 as Demand Media by Richard Rosenblatt, a former Intermix Media and MySpace executive, and Shawn Colo, a private-equity investor specializing in media and communications businesses. It became known for combining search-driven publishing, freelance content production, advertising technology, social-media tools, and online marketplaces. In its early years, Demand Media pursued a highly data-oriented publishing model. The company analyzed search queries and advertising demand to identify subjects likely to attract commercially valuable traffic, then commissioned freelance writers and video producers to create articles and short-form videos. This approach focused heavily on long-tail searches, particularly advice and how-to topics. Content appeared on company-owned properties such as eHow and Livestrong.com, on video platforms including YouTube, and through services supplied to third-party publishers. The model enabled the company to produce large volumes of relatively inexpensive content, but it also led to criticism that some material was superficial, repetitive, or primarily designed to perform well in search rankings. Demand Media expanded through acquisitions. Its portfolio included ExpertVillage, Pluck, domain-name businesses such as eNom and Name.com, Society6, Saatchi Art, and Deny Designs. Pluck supplied social-networking, commenting, and engagement tools to publishers, while Society6 and Saatchi Art moved the business beyond advertising-supported publishing into artist marketplaces and commerce. In 2016, the company adopted the Leaf Group name after separating its domain-registration operations into Rightside Group. Under the Leaf Group identity, it continued to develop lifestyle and media properties while expanding its marketplace activities. The company operated brands including eHow, Livestrong.com, LEAFtv, Well+Good, Hunker, and OnlyInYourState, alongside Society6 and Saatchi Art. Its studio and platform activities also included custom content and social-media services for outside brands, agencies, and publishers. Leaf Group remained publicly traded until Graham Holdings acquired it in an all-cash transaction announced in 2021 and valued at approximately $323 million. Shareholders approved the transaction at $8.50 per share, and the acquisition made Leaf Group a privately held Graham Holdings business. In 2023, the former Leaf Group business was reorganized as World of Good Brands. The restructuring separated lifestyle publishing properties from the marketplace businesses. Hunker was subsequently sold to Static Media in 2024. Later reported transactions separated Well+Good and Livestrong from the group through a sale to Ziff Davis and transferred Only In Your State to Launch Potato. Following these disposals and layoffs in the publishing division, the Leaf Group identity ceased to function as an independent operating company.
History
Leaf Group began in May 2006 as Demand Media, founded by Richard Rosenblatt and Shawn Colo. Rosenblatt brought experience from Intermix Media and MySpace, while Colo had worked in private equity with a focus on media and communications companies. The founders sought to build a large internet business by combining digital publishing, online communities, advertising, and acquisitions of established web properties. The company's initial strategy emphasized data-guided content production. Demand Media used search-query and advertising information to identify subjects with potential demand, particularly practical questions and how-to topics. It then distributed assignments to a screened pool of freelance writers and video creators. Editors reviewed submissions before publication, and the resulting material was published on company properties, on YouTube, or through third-party distribution relationships. The company attempted to retain visitors through related content, community functions, and social tools. Its ExpertVillage acquisition in 2007 added a large how-to video operation, while the purchase of Pluck in 2008 extended its technology offering to publisher websites. Demand Media grew rapidly through acquisitions and capital raising. During its first two years it raised more than $355 million from outside investors and accumulated a broad group of websites and domain portfolios. Its activities included domain registration through eNom and related businesses, content publishing through eHow and other sites, and technology services for online publishers. At its peak, the company described a very large volume of articles and videos and became one of the prominent suppliers of content to YouTube. Reports also discussed possible interest from Yahoo in acquiring the business, although Demand Media's leadership said it was not for sale. The business model attracted significant criticism. Critics argued that the algorithmic selection of subjects and low-cost freelance production encouraged generic or low-quality material designed to capture search traffic and advertising rather than provide authoritative editorial coverage. The company also faced questions about its accounting approach, especially the capitalization and multi-year amortization of content production costs. These issues became part of the public debate surrounding its proposed IPO and its claims regarding profitability. Demand Media diversified into social tools and commerce. It acquired IndieClick and RSS Graffiti in 2011, Name.com in 2013, Society6 in 2013, Saatchi Art in 2014, and Deny Designs in 2017. Society6 provided a marketplace for artwork and designs printed on consumer goods, while Saatchi Art operated as an online gallery and marketplace for original art. In 2014, Demand Media separated its domain-registration operations, including eNom, Name.com, and NameJet, into Rightside Group. The following strategic phase focused more heavily on media brands, lifestyle audiences, creator commerce, and marketing services. The company adopted the Leaf Group name in 2016. It later added Well+Good in 2018 and OnlyInYourState in 2019, strengthening its portfolio in wellness, lifestyle, travel, and location-based publishing. Its broader brand group included eHow, Livestrong.com, LEAFtv, Hunker, Society6, Saatchi Art, and other niche properties. The company continued to combine advertising, branded content, publishing technology, and marketplace transactions rather than relying on a single editorial or commerce model. Leaf Group remained publicly traded until Graham Holdings agreed to acquire it in 2021. Shareholders approved the all-cash transaction on June 10, 2021, at $8.50 per share, for an announced value of approximately $323 million. After becoming part of Graham Holdings, the former Leaf Group operations were reorganized. In 2023, the lifestyle publishing websites were separated from the marketplace businesses under the World of Good Brands structure. Hunker was sold to Static Media in 2024, followed by reported sales of Well+Good and Livestrong to Ziff Davis and Only In Your State to Launch Potato. The subsequent disposals and layoffs marked the end of Leaf Group as an independent operating identity.

Products and positioning
A data-driven digital media and commerce portfolio combining advertising-supported publishing, creator marketplaces, and branded content services.
Digital advice and how-to publishing
eHow
eHow was one of Demand Media's signature content properties. It published practical guidance across household tasks, personal interests, education, technology, careers, and lifestyle. The site reflected the company's search-oriented publishing model, using demand signals to identify questions and topics for commissioned articles and videos. It became a prominent example of the company's large-scale digital content strategy.
Health and fitness publishing
Livestrong.com
Livestrong.com was a health, nutrition, exercise, and wellness website operated within the Leaf Group portfolio. It provided informational articles, fitness guidance, recipes, and related lifestyle material. The property represented the company's effort to build subject-specific media brands with recurring audiences and advertising opportunities rather than relying only on broad how-to publishing.
Artist and design marketplace · 2009
Society6
Society6 operated an online marketplace through which artists and designers could offer their work on consumer products. The platform handled the connection between creator designs and products such as home goods, accessories, and art prints. Its acquisition in 2013 gave Demand Media a commerce business with a creator-focused supply model and reduced reliance on advertising-supported publishing.
Online art marketplace
Saatchi Art
Saatchi Art functioned as an online gallery and marketplace for original artworks. It connected artists with collectors through a digital storefront and international audience, complementing Society6's design-to-product model with higher-value original art transactions. Leaf Group acquired the business in 2014 and used it as a central part of its marketplace strategy.
Wellness and lifestyle publishing
Well+Good
Well+Good was a wellness and lifestyle media brand covering health, fitness, beauty, food, and related consumer topics. Leaf Group acquired it in 2018 as part of a strategy to assemble premium or specialized lifestyle audiences. The property was later separated from the former Leaf Group portfolio and sold to Ziff Davis.
Home design publishing
Hunker
Hunker was a digital publication focused on interiors, home improvement, decor, and design culture. It formed part of Leaf Group's lifestyle publishing group and was later included in the World of Good Brands restructuring. Hunker was sold to Static Media in 2024.
Travel and local-interest publishing
OnlyInYourState
OnlyInYourState published state-by-state travel ideas, attractions, food recommendations, and local-interest features in the United States. Leaf Group acquired the site in 2019 to broaden its lifestyle and travel audience. It was later sold to Launch Potato.
Short-form lifestyle video
LEAFtv
LEAFtv produced short-form lifestyle and how-to videos, particularly for a women-oriented audience. It extended Demand Media's original video-production model and supplied visual content for owned websites and distribution channels.
Controversies
2010
Criticism of content-farm publishing practices and accounting
Demand Media faced sustained criticism over its large-scale commissioning of inexpensive freelance articles and videos, with critics arguing that the model could produce low-quality, search-engine-oriented material. Its proposed IPO also drew scrutiny over the capitalization and amortization of content costs and the contrast between reported accounting results and continuing losses. These were widely reported criticisms rather than a single adjudicated scandal.
