LähiTapiola
Finnish customer-owned insurance and financial-services group
Last updated August 26, 2026
Overview
LähiTapiola is a Finnish customer-owned insurance and financial-services group created through the combination of Lähivakuutus and Tapiola. The group serves private customers, farmers, entrepreneurs, companies, public-sector bodies and other communities across Finland. Its activities cover non-life insurance, life and savings insurance, retirement-related products, investment and asset-management services, property investment, vehicle and machinery financing, and corporate risk-management and employee-wellbeing services. The brand combines two long-established Finnish insurance traditions. The roots of Lähivakuutus are associated with local fire-protection and mutual-insurance arrangements that developed in Finland from the eighteenth century, while Tapiola’s institutional predecessors included the Paloapuyhtiö group, Pohja and Aura. Tapiola itself was formed in 1982 through the merger of Aura and Pohja. Lähivakuutus became the shared marketing name of a national and regional network of local insurance companies in 1983. Before the merger, Tapiola had expanded beyond traditional insurance into banking, investment funds and asset management. Tapiola Bank began operating in 2004, while the group also developed investment-management and fund businesses. Lähivakuutus and Tapiola reopened merger discussions in 2011, signed a merger agreement in December of that year, and announced the LähiTapiola name in 2012. The new group began operations in 2013. The combination was intended to create a stronger mutual competitor in a Finnish market where banking groups were increasingly bundling financial and insurance services. The integration brought together two different organizational cultures. Tapiola was more centralized and professionally managed, whereas Lähivakuutus relied on regional companies with substantial local autonomy. The early group therefore concentrated on building a common operating model, combining regional presence and customer relationships with Tapiola’s experience in life insurance, banking, reinsurance, investment and broader financial services. Erkki Moisander, the first chief executive, played a central role in the integration. LähiTapiola has remained primarily focused on Finland and operates through national specialist companies and regional insurance companies. Its principal parent entity is LähiTapiola Keskinäinen Vakuutusyhtiö, while the group’s businesses include separate non-life and life-insurance operations, asset-management and property-investment companies, financing activities, alternative-fund operations and shared-service functions. S-Bank has served as a banking partner, and Elo as a pension-insurance partner. The group has also held investments or strategic relationships involving healthcare companies such as Mehiläinen and Pihlajalinna, investment firm Seligson & Co, and insurance company Turva. In the late 2010s, LähiTapiola repositioned itself from being solely an insurance provider toward a broader 'life support' model involving safety, financial security, health and wellbeing. The strategy supported partnerships in healthcare and experimentation with more cost-effective claims and occupational-accident care. By 2020, the group reported nearly 1.6 million owner customers, approximately 3,400 employees and more than 200 offices in Finland. It was described as Finland’s largest traffic-insurance provider, second-largest damage-insurance provider and fourth-largest life-insurance provider at that time. The brand’s distinctive positioning is its combination of mutual ownership, local accessibility and a broad set of insurance, savings, investment and wellbeing services.
History
LähiTapiola’s history combines the development of Finnish local mutual insurance with the growth of a more diversified financial group. One strand reaches back to eighteenth-century fire-protection arrangements established under Swedish rule. The Lähivakuutus network later developed through local mutual insurance companies founded following Finnish insurance legislation in the twentieth century. Its regional structure remained an important part of its identity. The other strand is Tapiola. The Paloapuyhtiö group was founded in 1857, and later predecessor companies included Pohja, established in 1909, and Aura, established in 1917. Aura and Pohja merged in 1982, creating Tapiola. In the following decade Tapiola operated as a centralized insurance group and gradually expanded into financial services. Lähivakuutus became the common marketing name for its group of local insurance companies in 1983, giving the network a nationally recognizable identity while retaining regional operations. During the 2000s, Tapiola moved into asset management, investment funds and banking. Tapiola Omaisuudenhoito and Tapiola-rahastoyhtiö were developed into broader investment-management activities, and Tapiola Bank began operations in 2004. The expansion created capabilities that later became part of LähiTapiola, including life insurance, savings, investment, banking, reinsurance and international financial expertise. Merger discussions between Lähivakuutus and Tapiola were revived in 2011. The agreement was signed on 23 December 2011, and the companies announced the planned combination in February 2012. Their corporate meetings approved the merger in May, and the LähiTapiola marketing name was announced in June. The new group began operating in 2013. The merger was strategically significant because it created a large mutual competitor at a time when Finnish banking groups were increasingly combining banking benefits with insurance offerings. The integration was difficult because the predecessors had different cultures and governance models. Tapiola had a centralized, academically oriented and professionally led structure, while Lähivakuutus consisted of regionally distributed companies with greater local independence. Erkki Moisander, the first LähiTapiola chief executive, emphasized equal treatment, communication and discussion during the integration. Over time, the combined organization sought to retain Lähivakuutus’s regional agility and cost awareness while applying Tapiola’s expertise in broader financial services. The group’s banking arrangements changed soon after formation. Tapiola Bank adopted the LähiTapiola Bank name in 2013, but a wider transaction with S-Bank resulted in a new S-Bank in 2014, with the S Group holding the majority ownership. In the retirement-insurance field, LähiTapiola Central Retirement Insurance Company combined with Eläke-Fennia in 2014 to form Elo, which became the group’s pension-insurance partner. By 2016, LähiTapiola was among Finland’s largest damage-insurance providers and had developed a significant life-insurance and asset-management business. The group reported approximately 1.6 million owner customers, around 3,400 employees and customer funds under management totaling approximately 9.7 billion euros in that period. It also operated through a network of regional companies and maintained relationships with S-Bank, Elo, Pihlajalinna, Mehiläinen, Seligson & Co and Turva. From 2017 onward, the group sought to reposition itself around the broader idea of life support. Rather than presenting insurance as its only role, LähiTapiola linked insurance with financial planning, personal safety, health and wellbeing. Its cooperation with Mehiläinen included healthcare-chain services, remote-doctor experiments and a model intended to help partially recovered employees return to work after occupational accidents. LähiTapiola increased its holding in Mehiläinen in 2018 and later moved to full ownership of Seligson & Co according to the referenced material. Moisander retired at the end of 2019 and Juha Koponen became chief executive in 2020. In the same period, LähiTapiola was described as Finland’s largest traffic-insurance provider, second-largest damage-insurance provider and fourth-largest life-insurance provider. Its operating structure included non-life and life-insurance companies, investment and property-management businesses, financing, alternative funds, shared services and roughly twenty regional companies. The group remains an active Finnish mutual financial institution centered on customer ownership and domestic service coverage.
