Kyokuyo Shipyard Corporation was established in October 1942 as Hikoshima Shipbuilding Company by the combination of five neighboring shipbuilding companies. It started shipbuilding and ship repairing. In 1956, after a merger with Murakami Iron Works Co., Ltd., it changed its name to Murakami Shipbuilding & Iron Works Co., Ltd. In 1961, it became Kyokuyo Shipbuilding & Iron Works Co., Ltd. In 1984, it changed its name to Kyokuyo Shipyard Corporation. The company filed for court protection in 1977 and had a rehabilitation plan approved in 1980.
