Kvaerner Fjellstrand

Fjellstrand is a shipyard located on the west coast of Norway, with a history dating back to 1928. It offers new vessels, conversion of vessels, battery installations for hybrid vessels, general vessel maintenance, and shipyard services.

Fjellstrand is located in the Hardanger Fjord on the west coast of Norway, where it has continuously developed its products, services and organisation since 1928. The history goes back to 1928, starting with building wooden rowing boats, but soon after going into series production of wooden lifeboats. After World War 2, the lifeboats were made of aluminium in even larger series, and in the period from 1956–1964, Fjellstrand also made lifeboats in GRP. Fjellstrand built the world’s first (aluminium) library boat, “Epos”, in 1962, still in service on the coast of Norway. The 92 feet passenger vessel “Vargøy” was built in 1967, at that time the worlds largest aluminium vessel built. In 1965 Fjellstrand received exclusive production right for building aluminium hulls from 25–75 feet to “Striker Aluminium Yachts” in the US, and made the hulls for almost 95% of these luxury sport- and fishing yachts. In the seventies, Fjellstrand continued with own design for aluminium vessels, ranging from pilot vessels, rescue vessels (SAR) and navy support vessels, then in 1976 starting with Fast Ferries. The Advanced Slender Catamaran (ASC) hull was developed by Fjellstrand in the early eighties, enabling increased speed to 35–40 knots, a breakthrough for the modern Catamaran Fast Ferries. During the nineties, Fjellstrand developed the “FoilCat” with service speed up to 50 knots, by installing Fjellstrand patented foils on 35 meter Aluminium Catamaran Fast Ferries with capacity for 400 pax. Still, these vessels are in service in the Far East. As a spin off from the FoilCat, Fjellstrand developed the active Motion Damping System (MDS) for the Aluminium Catamaran Fast Ferries.
