KSNL-LD

KSNL-LD is a low-power television station licensed to Salina, Kansas, in the United States. It is affiliated with NBC and operates as part of the Kansas State Network, a regional group built around Wichita NBC affiliate KSNW. The station serves viewers in Salina and nearby communities while also carrying the broader KSN programming service across central and western Kansas and into portions of neighboring Nebraska and Oklahoma. LIN TV Corporation acquired New Vision Television's station group in 2012, including KSNW and its satellite stations. LIN Media was then acquired by Media General in 2014. Nexstar Broadcasting Group agreed to acquire Media General in 2016, completing the transaction in January 2017. The acquisition brought KSNL-LD and the other KSN satellites under Nexstar ownership and reunited them with KSNF, a former Kansas State Network satellite whose ownership had been separated in 1986. Today, KSNL-LD functions as a local distribution outlet for the KSN/NBC service in the Salina area. KSNL-LD's service history in Salina began on December 13, 1964, when the Kansas State Network established a translator facility for Great Bend's KCKT-TV. The original translator operated on channel 74. In 1967 it moved to channel 18 and used the call sign K18AA. This arrangement continued until 1988, when the launch of full-power KAAS-TV displaced the translator from channel 18. The facility then moved to channel 6 and operated as K06LZ. The station's later technical transition reflected the broader conversion of American television broadcasting from analog to digital transmission. In 2008, it completed a digital flash cut on channel 47 and adopted the KSNL-LD call sign. The low-power designation identifies it as a station serving a localized area, although its programming relationship with the Kansas State Network gives it access to a broader regional service. KSNL-LD relays programming from KSNW, the Wichita NBC affiliate that anchors the network, while inserting local advertising and Salina-area news material. The Kansas State Network has historically operated as a group of stations and satellites intended to extend NBC and KSN programming throughout central and western Kansas. KSNL-LD forms the Salina-area component of that system. Its studios are located on North Santa Fe Avenue in downtown Salina, and its transmitter is located on State Street and Halsted Road in unincorporated Saline County, west of Salina. Corporate ownership of the station changed several times during the 2010s. On May 7, 2012, LIN TV Corporation announced that it would purchase New Vision Television's stations, including KSNW and its four satellite stations. The transaction was valued at $330.4 million, together with the assumption of $12 million in debt. The FCC approved the deal on October 2, 2012, and it closed on October 12. For LIN, the transaction represented a return to the Kansas market after an earlier, brief ownership episode involving low-power licenses associated with Wichita's KAKE-TV. On March 21, 2014, Media General announced its acquisition of LIN Media in a transaction valued at approximately $1.6 billion. The merger closed on December 19, 2014, transferring KSNL-LD and the other KSN stations to Media General. Nexstar Broadcasting Group announced an offer for Media General in September 2015 and reached an agreement to acquire the company in January 2016. The FCC approved the acquisition on January 11, 2017, and the transaction closed on January 17. Nexstar's purchase reunited KSNL-LD with KSNF, a former Kansas State Network satellite whose ownership had been separated from the rest of the network in 1986. Under Nexstar ownership, KSNL-LD remains a local low-power outlet for the KSN/NBC service. The station does not carry the additional subchannels available on the full-power KSN stations. Its role is therefore primarily one of regional program distribution, Salina-area advertising, and localized news or public-service content rather than independent full-scale programming production.
