KSNG

KSNG is a full-power television station licensed to Garden City, Kansas, and serving southwestern Kansas. The station carries NBC programming through its relationship with KSNW in Wichita and also provides Telemundo programming through its digital television operation. It is one of the stations that make up the Kansas State Network, a regional group that distributes KSNW-originated programming across central and western Kansas and reaches selected communities in adjacent parts of Nebraska and Oklahoma. The station began broadcasting on November 5, 1958, under the call sign KGLD. The letters reflected the communities of Garden City, Liberal, and Dodge City, the area the station was intended to serve. It was established by Central Kansas Television Co., Inc., initially operating as a satellite of KCKT in Great Bend. Together, the two stations were promoted as the Tri-Circle Network. KOMC-TV in Oberlin joined the arrangement in 1959, expanding the regional relay system. A major structural change came in 1962, when the Federal Communications Commission determined that central and western Kansas belonged within the Wichita television market. Central Kansas Television subsequently acquired KARD in Wichita, now known as KSNW, and combined it with KCKT, KGLD, and KOMC-TV. The stations relayed NBC programming over a large geographic area, with the Wichita station serving as the principal source. The network later adopted the Kansas State Network name, which remains the broader group identity associated with KSNG and its sister stations. The station adopted the KSNG call letters on August 30, 1982. KSNG has passed through several broadcast ownership groups. The KSN stations were acquired by SJL Broadcast Management in 1988 and sold to Lee Enterprises in 1995. Emmis Communications acquired most of Lee's television holdings in 2000. Montecito Broadcast Group, a partnership involving SJL and Blackstone, purchased the stations in 2006 and sold them to New Vision Television in 2007. LIN TV Corporation acquired New Vision's station group in 2012, including KSNW and its satellite stations. Media General then acquired LIN Media in 2014. Nexstar acquired Media General in January 2017, bringing KSNG and the rest of the KSN stations into Nexstar's national television portfolio. Technically, KSNG ended analog broadcasting on June 12, 2009, as part of the federally mandated transition to digital television. Its digital service moved to VHF channel 11 after the transition, and the station later increased effective radiated power from 7.4 kilowatts to 56.8 kilowatts. Today, KSNG's role is primarily that of a regional network station: it extends NBC and related programming into southwestern Kansas while preserving a local presence through area advertising, news coverage, and community-oriented inserts.

KSNG signed on November 5, 1958, as KGLD, a call sign associated with Garden City, Liberal, and Dodge City. Central Kansas Television Co., Inc. established the station to serve southwestern Kansas. Ownership changed repeatedly over the following decades. SJL Broadcast Management acquired the KSN stations in 1988, and Lee Enterprises purchased them in 1995. Emmis Communications acquired most of Lee's television properties in 2000. Montecito Broadcast Group, formed by SJL and the private-equity firm Blackstone, acquired the KSN stations in January 2006. Montecito announced a sale to New Vision Television in July 2007, and the transaction closed in November of that year. LIN TV Corporation announced in May 2012 that it would acquire New Vision's stations, including KSNW and its satellites. The transaction was approved by the FCC in October and closed later that month. In March 2014, Media General announced a $1.6 billion acquisition of LIN Media. The merger closed in December 2014, placing KSNG under Media General ownership. Nexstar Broadcasting Group announced an offer for Media General in September 2015 and reached an agreement in January 2016. The FCC approved the transaction in January 2017, and the acquisition closed on January 17. This brought KSNG and the other KSN stations into Nexstar and reunited them with KSNF, a former member whose ownership had separated from the network in 1986. KSNG completed the federally required analog-to-digital transition on June 12, 2009. Its post-transition digital operation used VHF channel 11, and its effective radiated power increased from 7.4 kilowatts to 56.8 kilowatts on June 27, 2009. The station now serves its territory through network programming, regional news, local advertising, and digital services. Its Garden City bureau and sales office provide a local presence, while its transmitter operates from rural southwestern Finney County.
