KSNB-TV

KSNB-TV is a full-power television station licensed to York, Nebraska, and serving the Lincoln–Hastings–Kearney television market. The station broadcasts NBC programming and is part of Gray Media’s Nebraska station group, which also includes Lincoln and Grand Island CBS affiliates KOLN and KGIN, Lincoln CW+ affiliate KCWH-LD, and Hastings MeTV affiliate KNHL. KSNB’s transmitter is located near Beaver Crossing, while its principal news operations are based north of Hastings along U.S. Route 281. The station also maintains a bureau and sales presence in Grand Island, and master control and other back-office functions are handled through KOLN’s Lincoln facilities. The station began broadcasting on October 1, 1965, as KHTL-TV, a Superior-based rebroadcaster of the Nebraska Television Network, an ABC-affiliated group centered on KHOL-TV in Kearney. Its call sign changed to KSNB-TV in 1974. During its early decades, the station’s role was shaped by its position within a regional network rather than by a large independent local operation. Translators were later established in Beatrice and Lincoln in an effort to extend the network’s reach, although the service initially had limited cable distribution in Lincoln. Ownership and affiliation changed substantially in the 1990s. After the Nebraska Television Network was sold to Pappas Telecasting, KSNB moved from ABC programming to a simulcast of Grand Island Fox affiliate KTVG-TV. The stations were marketed together as Fox 4 & 17. Because KSNB’s signal overlapped with Pappas-owned Omaha Fox station KPTM, the KSNB license was held by Colins Broadcasting while Pappas supplied programming and operational services. KSNB also carried selected UPN programs at different points, which helped it obtain Lincoln cable carriage in 2003. The station left the air in December 2009 after Pappas’s operating agreement ended, although temporary and intermittent low-power transmissions were used later to preserve the license. Gray Television, already the owner of KOLN and KGIN, agreed to acquire KSNB in 2012. The transaction required a failing-station waiver because of the limited number of full-power stations in the market and was completed in 2013. Gray initially used KSNB for MyNetworkTV and local programming under the 10/11 Central Nebraska brand, followed by a MeTV affiliation. KSNB became the market’s principal NBC outlet in 2014 after Gray shut down KHAS-TV in Hastings following its acquisition of Hoak Media. NBC programming, syndicated content, and the former KHAS news operation moved to KSNB and related KOLN/KGIN digital services. The station subsequently adopted the NBC Nebraska identity and gained an important role in serving Lincoln, where it replaced Omaha station WOWT on cable systems. A major technical redevelopment followed the 2020 collapse of the KOLN transmission tower near Beaver Crossing. Gray obtained approval to replace KSNB’s inadequate low-VHF facilities, move the city of license from Superior to York, and operate on UHF channel 24 from the rebuilt KOLN tower site. The upgrade improved the station’s terrestrial coverage and integrated KSNB more closely with Gray’s broader Nebraska news and engineering infrastructure.

Channel 4 in central Nebraska was proposed in the early 1960s by Bi-States Company, the owner of the Nebraska Television Network. The Federal Communications Commission affirmed the Superior allocation in 1962, and a construction permit followed in 1964. KHTL-TV began broadcasting on October 1, 1965, as part of the regional ABC network. In 1974, after the stations were sold to NTV Enterprises, channel 4 adopted the KSNB-TV call letters. Joseph Amaturo acquired the NTV stations in 1979. KSNB was later sold with other NTV properties to Gordon Broadcasting in 1985, followed by a complicated period involving a proposed Sterling Communications transaction, receivership, creditor litigation, and attempts by multiple parties to acquire the stations. Fant Broadcasting ultimately purchased KSNB and the other principal NTV stations in 1993. Under Fant, KSNB participated in Fox programming through a relationship with KTVG-TV in Grand Island. In 1996, Pappas Telecasting agreed to acquire KSNB and immediately began operating it through a local marketing arrangement. That September, KSNB and its translators shifted from ABC to Fox simulcasts with KTVG. Because the station’s coverage overlapped with Pappas’s Omaha Fox station, KPTM, ownership of the KSNB license was transferred to Colins Broadcasting while Pappas continued to provide programming and operational support. The station intermittently carried UPN programming, and that affiliation helped it obtain cable carriage in Lincoln in 2003. Pappas launched KFXL-TV as the Lincoln-area Fox outlet in 2009. Once Fox programming moved to KFXL and related NTV services, Pappas’s agreements for KSNB ended. KSNB and its Lincoln translators left the air in December 2009. A temporary low-power signal was later used, including programming from 3ABN, while Colins attempted to preserve the license and develop a replacement facility. Gray Television announced its purchase of KSNB in November 2012. The company already owned KOLN and KGIN, so the transaction required a failing-station waiver under the FCC rules then in effect. The acquisition closed in February 2013. KSNB resumed regular service in April with MyNetworkTV programming and local shows branded as 10/11 Central Nebraska, and it added MeTV later that year. The station’s role changed again in 2014. Gray had acquired Hoak Media, whose properties included KHAS-TV, the established NBC affiliate for Hastings and the Tri-Cities area. Because regulatory conditions complicated a proposed sale of KHAS, Gray shut that station down and moved its NBC affiliation, syndicated programming, and news resources to KSNB and KOLN/KGIN digital channels. KSNB briefly used the former channel 5 identity before adopting NBC Nebraska. The change also enabled KSNB to replace WOWT on Lincoln cable systems, giving the station broader practical access in the market. In 2020, an ice storm caused the collapse of KOLN’s Beaver Crossing tower. Gray subsequently proposed a comprehensive KSNB technical rebuild, arguing that the inherited low-VHF facility was inadequate for reliable digital service. The FCC approved a city-of-license change to York and a move to UHF channel 24 in 2021. The new facility was co-sited with the rebuilt KOLN tower and improved coverage while consolidating the station’s technical and operational relationship with Gray’s Nebraska network.
